3 'I wanted Black Sails but got Pirates of the Caribbean' stars

First, let me explain my 3 stars comment and why it is completely my fault that I couldn't give a higher rating. It's been quite some time since I last read a pirate romance and Cutlass seemed like a good one to bring back memories. All the reviews compared this book to Pirates of the Caribbean and I thought 'of course, it's a pirate book and who doesn't know Jack Sparrow' (I've watched all four movies more times than I can count.) But this book literally is like Pirates of the Caribbean - a treasure hunt, humor, good guys style pirates, a talking parrot, and very PG-13 action. Don't get me wrong, that's perfectly ok. I just expected something different, something darker, viler, more pirate-ish. The book started really promising with fast-paced action and an interesting romantic twist but then it continued kind of flat.

Because let's see our hero - Jonathan 'One-eyed Jack' Tremayne. He is on a quest for revenge and at the same time on a hunt for a hidden treasure. (Searching for a fountain of youth is piece of cake compared to this. Someone clearly had too much time to spare to hide a pile of gold so mysteriously *trying not to laugh*) Anyway, Tremayne is a very gentlemanly pirate. The only pirate thing about him is an eyepatch and later the talking parrot. And the worst word in his vocabulary is wench. Someone clearly has very refined manners.

Sarina Talbot or should I say Elizabeth Swann is a lady-turn-pirate. After one hour of sword-fighting practice, she is a better swordsman than half the pirates. Because apparently they are bad with swords and she is natural or what? I like badass female warriors but that was just too ridiculous.

The love story - actually more correctly the lack of a love story. Tremayne and Rina are attracted to each other pretty much from the very start but apart from a little innocent flirting, we don't get to see much more. Jonathan is extremely gentlemanly in that area too and I could say quite shy as well. Seriously, he is blushing so much it's not even funny anymore. I've never seen pirates blush so much. No, scratch that, I've never seen pirates blush. The Brothel scene is just hilarious because everyone is so polite. Congrats to Sam, one of the crewmen, who is the only one with enough balls to actually sleep with the madame. Go, Sam! But of course, we don't see that. Just like we don't exactly see anything happen between Jonathan and Rina. I'm not sure if they even came to the second base because the scene fades to black. And he told her he won't touch her in fear to make her pregnant?? Apparently, he'd never heard of oral before, or maybe that's just too crude for him, I guess. But we do see a lot of longing stares and sweet talk during the fighting. Because you have so much time for flirting while fighting for your life.

The villain aka the only true pirate in this book who is evil because someone needs to be. But he too suffers for a gentlemanly disease. For instance, why kill your enemies if you can tie them up and wait for them to break free so you will need to chase them again. Ok, I'm being a little mean here, but it's just so ridiculously funny.

However, despite my long ranting here I pretty much laughed out loud the entire book. Some scenes were great and amusing, some were just so hilariously stupid. As a historical romance, it was a good read. A kind of romantic, fairytale-ish story that makes you feel sweeter than a marshmallow. Which is alright sometimes but not always. However, I wanted something more pirate-ishly realistic. Pirate plundering, bloody action, dirty sex, and maybe HEA on the top of everything. It might be, I just wanted too much. After all, if it was too realistic, everybody would be hanged at the end.

So, to sum up, this book looked like this.

But I wanted that.

If you like sweet, clean romances, gentlemanly pirates, LOL humor, and Pirates of the Caribbean then I recommend this book to you big time. Seriously, you won't be disappointed. And if anyone knows a pirate book like I wanted this one to be, please feel free to recommend it to me. I'll be eternally grateful.

P.S. If there is anybody out there (besides me) who happens not to know what a cutlass is, here is a picture. (For an unknown reason, I thought cutlass is some kind of a spyglass. I have no idea where I get that idea, lol) It's gorgeous, isn't it?

Five Swashbuckling Stars!

When I was sixteen years old (a while ago now…) I visited Disneyworld for the first time. And my overriding memory of that trip was the Pirates of the Carribean ride. This was long before the movie was made, and long before Jonny Depp made Pirates cool again. But still, for a few minutes that ride transported me to a Carribean world full of rum and treasure, and pirates that not only fought for their treasures, but found great enjoyment in it, too.

For me, Cutlass by T.M. Franklin was the book equivalent of that ride, and I mean that in the most favourable way. It tells the story of Jonathan ‘One-Eyed-Jack’ Tremayne – a sexy pirate whose use of leather breeches made me very flushed – and Sarina ‘Wild Rina’ Talbot, the girl who seeks vengeance against the pirate captain for her father’s death. Along the way there’s a soothsaying witch, a quest for treasure, and an epic adventure that left me breathless.

Well written, with characters you’ll be rooting for (or against!) and a story that keeps you turning the pages, Cutlass was a wonderful read.

It is 1745, and Captain Jonathan Tremayne, aka One-Eyed Jack, is on a mission. On the surface, it’s a mission to uncover the treasure of one Simon Alastair Mellick some 100 years before, a treasure with a location obscured by miscellaneous artifacts and Scripture references.

But a closer look reveals that this mission is fueled by something else, something primal and possessive that will make a man do whatever he has to do to secure it.

Vengeance.

Not only for the very real reason behind his nickname, but for reasons far more personal. Those reasons are for One-Eyed Jack to share if he dares, and as a man who plays his cards verrrry close to his chest, he’s not likely to share those reasons with just anybody.

Luckily for her, Sarina Talbot isn’t just anybody.

She’s a woman on a mission of her own, driven by only one of the reasons for One-Eyed Jack’s current mission. The death of her father lit a fire under young Sarina, and she has stolen away on Captain Jack’s ship, the Black Arrow, pretending to be a slight young man named Smith. And she will fetch his water and shave his neck, all for the sake of getting close enough to Jonathan Tremayne to fulfill her life’s mission: killing him for killing her father and stealing his beloved cutlass.

But if you asked Jack, he would tell you that things are not always what they seem, that the truth can be more dangerous than a lie, and though she gives an adequate shave, Sarina is more trouble than she’s worth. And he can’t seem to get her off his boat or out of his head.

And it is the latter which vexes him most.

Sarina would agree—shadowing Captain Jack to find out the truth about her father is turning out to be more than she bargained for. What, with life on the high seas, evading rival ships, and the captain’s natural scent filling her with a longing she’d never experienced before.

Like she said, more than she bargained for.

If Jonathan and Sarina think their first meeting is a doozy, then they are in no way prepared for what lies ahead for them in T.M. Franklin’s exciting new novel, Cutlass. Equal parts amorous and adventurous, Franklin spins an engaging, high-energy tale that I devoured in literally one day. Not only are the two main characters dynamic and interesting on their own, but any scene with Jonathan and Sarina together crackles with delicious tension.

The promise of Mellick’s treasure is compelling enough on its own, but the real magic of this tale is the possibility of passion between Jonathan and Sarina. They both feel the stirrings, both sense the pull toward each other, but they both know enough of life on the sea to realize there’s no such thing as a guarantee. And even with Jonathan’s gifted sister Charlotte seeing something between Jonathan and Sarina, neither is fully willing to take the ultimate risk... not when they’re already risking life and limb for Mellick’s treasure and personal revenge.

Or so they tell themselves.

I think it’s impossible for T.M. Franklin to write a story that doesn’t move your heart, excite your brain, and make you fall in love with the entire cast of characters, and Cutlass proves no exception to that. This might be my favorite story of hers to date, and given my love for her entire canon, that is saying something. So if you like a little swordplay with your word play and a dash of snark in your She-ro, then you will love T.M. Franklin’s Cutlass.

And even if you don’t, I’m willing to bet my portion of Mellick’s treasure that you’ll love Cutlass anyway.

T.M. Franklin finally got this out, I love love love this story hard. Jonathan ¿One-Eyed-Jack’ Tremayne is my book boyfriend, yes a very sexy and hot pirate. Sarina ‘Wild Rina’ Talbot, is just a girl searching for vengeance . When they lives collide, let’s just say the adventure is just beginning. The story will keep you on edge, you will have a lot of fun and if you think this is just another romance book, think twice, you will have a great ride and a surprise that you didn’t see coming.

Aye Aye Cap'n!!

This tale is quite the adventure. Following the diary of another looking for treasure. Competing for the prize against others, both good and evil. It is so funny, I was laughing many times. There is bloodshed, but any good pirate story will have a sword fight to the death. The story takes place in the 1700s, so no graphic sex, I would let my young adult daughter read this at 12 or 13. And now a bit about the story...

Sarina is out for revenge. She will avenge her father's death if it the last thing she does. Tremayne is out for treasure and he is searching for Mellick's gold. When the two cross paths I think the story is about to end before it gets started, but with a little trust and lots of honesty, the two may be able to with together to both get what they want!!

Favorite passages:
- “Very well. What are your demands?” Sarina inhaled deeply. “First of all, I sleep in the bed.” Jonathan snorted. “Now who’s being forward?”
- “Don’t test me, wench. You. Will. Lose.”
- “His life is the sea and all that rubbish. There’s no place for someone like me.”
- “If I knew it would get you to stop talking, I might have told you sooner.”

An absolute blast!
Suspense - in spades
Engaging - couldn't put it down the characters are so alive and easy to connect with
Comedy - Smith's antics are off the chart - Sassy, take no prisoners and darn handy with a rum jug
Subterfuge - its always the ones you least suspect
Romance - strong undercurrent that was playful yet prevalent
I would honestly recommend for anyone looking for a good all around read!
I received a free copy of this book and was a bit hesitant, nowhere close to my normal genre - after reading this story I may be expanding that.

Have ye seen Jonathan Tremaine? I know he’s not with Davy Jones because that Franklin wench wrote a book about him. Ye bet I read it! I’m lookin’ for the scurvy dog. Bastard owes me coin. And he took my parrot, too.

Aye, I come from a long line o’ pirates. They sank ships off the English coast. Can’t help bein’ one meself.

One-eyed Jack? Ohh, ye’d best not be callin’ him that to his face.

Southern Carolinas, ye say? Aye, I’ll be lookin’ there.

Aye, the man owes me money and I’m wantin’ it. More’n that, I’m missin’ my Sweetpea.

Ach, no, ye bilge rat! That’s the parrot! Although Tremaine can swash me buckle anytime he wants.

Hey! I’m old, not dead!

Man shivers me timbers. No, not much chance o’ that happenin’ since that Smith wench came around him, though. What, Smith? Name’s Sarina. She’s got her iron round his ankle. Tough little birdie. I think she may just be able to tame him if anyone can. Mixed blessin’ for her, what with all the enemies he’s got.

What? Oh, aye he’s me enemy. If ye see him, tell him he owes me and I’ll have my due. And read that book about him. That Franklin wench has a way with words. I’d pay her five dubloons for it if I had it. But I don’t. Yet.

I’ll find ye, Jonathan Tremaine…

Cutlass is a captivating standalone by T.M Franklin. It is a rollicking, action-packed Pirate adventure, drama, mystery, danger, secrets, a treasure hunt, and a dash of romance. I am so happy I stumbled upon this book, I love a good pirate adventure, and this definitely doesn’t disappoint!
Set in 1748 Sarina Talbot has disguised herself as a boy and snuck aboard a Pirate Ship, hell bent on revenge. She’s after the man who murdered her father and she won’t rest until justice is done.
Jack Tremayne, aka One-Eyed Jack, is the Captain of the pirate ship “Black Arrow”. His ruthless and bloodthirsty reputation precedes him, and the mere mention of his name strikes fear into the hearts of all who’ve heard the tales. He is on a quest that will wreck revenge and bring him untold wealth in the process. This treasure hunt is fraught with peril, but Jack will stop at nothing to get what he wants. What happens when he discovers his cabin boy is actually a girl? What happens when she tries to kill him/ Will she believe him when he claims he’s innocent of the crime? These two will need to work together to get what they want? But danger follows them and there is a traitor on board. What happens you ask? Well you really must read all the exciting details for yourself!!!
This was such a fun read- packed full of action, suspense, humour, intensity, and mystery. The author did a superb job with the character and plot development. The world-building and historical details were clever and creative. I was transported onto the high seas experiencing the story right alongside the characters as we embarked on our treasure hunt. And I loved every minute. There is a romantic element to the story- but it is a very small part of the overall story. There is a little kissing, but not much more. The chemistry between the characters is really intense- which added an extra element of interest to the story.
There are journal entries which help to build some of the backstory and adds an extra layer to the whole storyline. There are several threads playing out at the same time, and the author expertly weaves them all together.
The story twists and turns, keeping me on the edge of my seat a lot of the time, trying to figure out what was happening and who the traitor was. Even though I guessed who right from the beginning, this predictability didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story, as I followed along to see if I was right.
So if you love pirates, treasure hunts, hidden agendas, battles on the high seas, action, danger, legends, sword fights, a vocal parrot, a Caribbean adventure, deciphering puzzles and clues, tension, intrigue, and a touch of the supernatural- then what are you waiting for, this is definitely the book for you!!!

Thank you, T.M Franklin!

***I received an ebook copy in exchange for an honest review***

I read this story before it was published, and am just as in love with this version as I was with the former!

Sarina is out for revenge. She’s determined to make whomever is responsible for the death of her father, and the theft of his prized cutlass, pay for their deeds. Convinced that pirate captain Jonathan Tremayne is responsible for this, Sarina does what any 1700s, vengeful lady would do: sneaks onto Jonathan’s ship, disguises herself as his newest cabin boy, and starts working at taking the captain down from the inside.

This book is filled with equal amounts of action and romance. I loved watching the interactions between Sarina and Jonathan evolve as the story carried on. Their personalities complemented one another perfectly. Honestly, it seemed like they were just naturally meant to be together, in both a working sense, and a romantic sense.

There were all sorts of things between the covers of this book that I would expect in a pirate story, and Franklin nailed each element. The treasure hunt was exhilarating, and I loved that the journals were used to facilitate this piece of the adventure. The adventure of being on a pirate ship was there, complete with a talking parrot. And I loved that Franklin made her leading lady one that was full of snark and sass, and headstrong.

I haven’t read too many books that were set in this time period, but I really enjoyed how authentic Franklin made this world feel to me as a reader. The ploy in this story is unique and all the characters—including the secondary ones—came together to breathe life into the story. The development was there, everything moved at a good pace, and I was very easily hooked into the story.

This is a nice departure from what Franklin has already given us as published works.

Anyone looking for a good old-fashioned pirate story should check out Cutlass. And, if you’re in the mood for romance that’s classic, this is the book for you too!

Five stars to this novel!

Ahoy, mateys! Let’s talk pirates, but not your everyday pirates. These are pirates – and a lady – on a mission of honor, revenge, and – of course – treasure.

Sarina Talbot is determined to make the pirate captain Jonathan Tremayne pay for the murder of her father and the theft of his prized cutlass. In order to do so, she sneaks aboard his ship, disguised as a boy, and finds herself put to work as a cabin boy to the captain.

While in close proximity to each other, Sarina and Jonathan learn more about each other’s motivations, and the truth behind her father’s death. With the help of Jonathan’s first mateand an island native, they set out to confront a joint enemy and seek a long lost treasure. All the while, they deal with a traitor in their midst and being hunted by the Crown. Jonathan’s sister, a seer, helps them out as well, also providing Sarina with some female perspective.

I enjoyed the banter between Sarina and Jonathan very much. You can tell that they are well-matched, which annoys them both to no end. Sarina’s aversion to bloodshed and her creative solutions to this were also hilarious. And it was definitely adorable when she cross-dressed, much to Jonathan’s chagrin. The supporting characters are also well-rounded and bring more depth to the storyline. Yes, this is Sarina’s and Jonathan’s story, but the others play important parts as well.

The snippets of Mellick’s journal at the start of each chapter are a lovely touch, showing the treasure hunt from the original perspective and tying the chapters together. The epilogue is also very satisfying, hinting at the legacy of Sarina and Jonathan.

Although TM Franklin usually writes more supernatural young adult stories, she does a wonderful job at portraying this exciting adventure. Let Jonathan shiver yer timbers!

Captain Jonathan Tremayne has his hands full trying to declare his innocence and keep away from Crown ships and Pirates hell bent on revenge against him.

Sarina Talbot is sure that Jonathan is responsible for her father's death and stole his cutlass. Yet Jonathan says he is innocent but can lead her to the man responsible and the two form an uneasy alliance.

As the two try and follow clues they have to navigate those out to reach a certain treasure before them, the law and each other and discover who is the spy among them.

This was a great read that kept me interested from start to finish and was a bit more fast moving than the last book I read involving pirates.

One thing I liked was the difference between what Sarina knew of her father and what Jonathan knew. I thought that was a great twist as it put things in a different perspective and it made Sarina re-evaluate what she knew about everything. She was strong and determined and did not want to back down from anything.

I thought Jonathan was definitely an interesting character in that he was a "dangerous" pirate yet at the same time he wanted to protect Sarina on his boat and go after a treasure while keeping everyone safe from those who were against him. He knew he had feelings for Sarina but was a little afraid to act on them to begin with.

I loved the character of Charlotte, Jonathan's half-sister. Loved her "seer" abilities and I loved how straight forward she was. I thought her relationship with Maxwell Baines was great and I would love a book with the two of them!

I wasn't surprised at the reveal of who the spy was as I never trusted the guy and thought he was kind of scummy.

I really enjoyed the race for the treasure and how everything came about. Loved the rivalry on the water!!

T.M. Franklin is one of We So Nerdy’s very first friends and we adore her. The fact that she’s a phenomenal author is an added bonus because we’ve loved every opportunity to enjoy her words over the years. T.M. is so talented! Her ability to write across several genres demonstrates the depth of her imagination and artistry. So when I learned that T.M. was writing a pseudo-adult pirate adventure romance, I was HERE FOR IT.

I adore Cutlass from beginning to end! Of course the romance and UST between the two main characters is juicy, but what I enjoy just as much is the creativity of T.M.’s storytelling. Cutlass takes place in the heyday of British colonialism/global dominance of the high seas, as well as the Golden Age of Piracy. I can’t imagine the research it must have been taken to write this story, because while it’s historical fiction, the world-building, references, and relationships are very credible. Cutlass is fun, romantic, suspenseful, and so well-written!

MUSTREAD for fans of historical fiction/romance and those who generally enjoy adventure and suspense.

This book was definitely an adventure! When I picked it up, I was drawn in immediately. I mean, who hasn't been fascinated by mysteries and pirates at some point in their life? Basically, this book touched on everything I love in a good story. There was romantic tension, witty banter, a good old fashioned treasure hunt, mystery, danger... There are so, so many reasons to love this book that I couldn't possibly begin to explain them all. With all that praise, you're probably glaring at that whole 4/5 stars thing and wondering if I'm totally awful at math. So I'll tell you. Literally the only thing that kept this book from earning the fourth star is that I felt like sometimes the story sort of lagged a bit. Honestly, it could have been my trying to juggle too many things at once that made it feel a little slow to me. It could've been the writing style or the pacing of the action. It's not so slow that it would discourage me from reading it. It just took me a bit longer than I expected to finish this one. Overall, though, it was an excellent story and I really enjoyed stepping out of the usual predictable romance to explore the pirate life.
January 26, 2018
I've only read it because it promised me pirates.
I was operating under false assumption that it would be a YA. Quite obviously, it isn't.
I also thought it would have a fantasy setting. Nope.
It turned out to be my first adult historical romance. And I was really disappointed as, even though I've never read a book like that, I could predict every. single. turn. If it was only a romance, that would be all right, but quite a bit part of this book is pirates and adventures, so that was a disappointment.
At the same time, I can't find a reason to rate it lower than 3 stars. The writing was good, though it would be better if every second word wasn't "wench." The plot was captivating enough. The romance was quite sweet, and there was a lot of action.
I'll probably forget all about this book by tomorrow but it was enjoyable enough while reading it, which I guess is the entire purpose.

This book was fun filled with danger adventure buried treasure; & two main characters who were fighting against falling in love. This such a fun read and as I listened to the story be told by the author in her reading group during the isolation brought by this pandemic; in my mind a saw the makings a great swashbuckling Errol Flynn movie from my childhood. The chapters seemed end too quickly and I couldn’t wait for the next days reading. T.M. Franklin is an amazing Story teller. I hope to meet her in person at a book signing some day.

A fun, pirate adventure story. Sarina is after Tremayne for revenge. She sneaks on his ship. He is looking for hidden treasure. I loved how Sarina doesn't let him push her around. Just a really fun read that I highly enjoyed.
