In this book, it's human who are the endangered species. That's new. The fae, vampires and magi each rule different parts. Sidney is the daughter of Lord Henry and had to get married by the age of 25, that is the law. She is to become the next ruler. Sidney is a warrior, not a lover, so anyone she has come across really is not interested. Her dad finds her a human named Jamie, who looks pretty on the outside, but he is not a nice person at all. The only male Did has ever even liked was her best friend and vampire prince Darien. Lord Henry won't even allow her to talk to him, but what he does know is she still does.
This book is a lot about politics. A young lady coming of age. People or I guess you could say "rulers" trying to come together to make a change in archaic laws. The book was long and began to drag in places, but was well written. It was a good story and mostly entertainly. I liked that it was the humans who were endangered.

This book started very well with an interesting setting, post apocalyptic but without any loss in technology. Actually more of an advancement since they end up with teleportation.
The world includes, shifter, vampire, elf, human, magi, and all sort of creatures as divided into city ruled by one family each but all submitting to the rules of the conceal.
The characters were interesting and likable but it came soon transparent that it was all about how Darien and Sidney were going to have sex.
The big problem seemed to be that her father was against the match because they would end up breeding a phoenix, him being a vampire and her being half fae half gypsie.
So you have this scheme to try to get Sidney to keep in the good grace of her father, who clearly is a misogynist bastard who doesn't give a fuck and would be more than happy to give her birthright to his fake son, so that she can become the ruler of her city. At the same time going against the same father to get her a seat on the conceal, I mean heck she is a girl so he definitely doesn't want her there. And to make sure that she gets married to the creep her father has chosen for her while never actually letting him touch her. So far, so awesome. Oh yeah you are also trying to catch a serial killer in the mix.
Also there is the nightmare dream part that started well and got interrupted and was never talked about again.

My problem is that most of the important conversation about solving the issues at hand are cut short while there are more and more half sex scene through the book. Because they can't have sex before she is married with her creep but are still going so strong at it, I wonder how they don't get and aneurysm. Lucky those scene are at least well written.
And then when they finally get to it, yeah big win, that's the end.
All the other political issues of the novel are just summaries in a one page epilogue. I was expecting a cliffhanger for a second book at least nope. All we got is that the plan failed. They are together but Sidney's fake brother is getting the city and they still can't get married she'll have to marry someone else after a year of mourning like that the fuck. The reason why I really hate this ending is the chastity medical exam, which is basically Sidney getting raped by a doctor in front of her step-mother and mother-in-law on the morning of her wedding. Then all knew it was going to happen and they still went with it to try and keep the city and it failed. And I'm like super grossed out.
Also I wanted Sidney's father dead. I mean Darien is supposed to have a high body count but definitely not high enough for my taste.

I do have a lot of complains so that's why the three stars but it was still a nice read

This book is amazing! It's a love story wrapped in politics. And feel like some of the political issues kind of parallel what is happening in the U.S. right now with women's rights being threatened.

Sydney is the daughter of, essentially, the mayor of San Fransisco. Her father, a widowed gypsy, married a Fire Fairy and the relationship gave way to Sydney. He was best friends all of his life with the King of Los Angela's, a Vampire named William, who married Sydney's mother's best friend. King William's son, and Prince of Los Angeles, Darien and Sydney were raised side by side and grew up as best friends. Until Sydney's father separated them when he started seeing signs of romantic feeling from Sydney toward Darien; it is forbidden for gypsies and vampires to breed because their offspring could be dangerous races who have been forbidden to even exist.

As the minor daughter of the leader of San Fransisco, Sydney has no freedom. She is her father's property and must do as he bids until she is married and then becomes her husband's property. A husband who was chosen for her by her wicked stepmother. A husband who only wants control over San Fransisco, and Sydney herself.

In between all of this, Sydney is nominated for a seat on the Council, a group of people who oversee all of the cities and different races. Her father forbids it and cuts her off financially and then some.

In the meantime, Sydney and Darien have discovered their mutual romantic feelings for each other and Darken hatches a plan to save Sydney from her future. But will it work?

I don't know because I need to read the next boooook!!!

I want to start by saying that I loved this book. I loved that humans are the endangered species and that humans are aware of and know that other species exist like vampires, werewolves, fae ect…. I loved that all species worked together in keeping the world turning.

Some of the things that I didn’t like were that humans or human women were the property of first their father and then their husband. Women are not allowed to be in control of their own lives they must do exactly as they are told or be severely punished.

The main character Sidney is human and the heir to her father’s throne. Soon she must take her rightful place as the Lady of her people but first, she must find a husband but Sidney as a little problem with this rule. She does not want to get married as she can find no human that she wants to be married to as she is in love with her childhood and best friend a vampire, Prince Darien.

According to the laws of their people and the council, it is forbidden for Sidney and Darien to be together or marry. When Sidney’s father finds out how Sidney and Darien feel about each other he stops her from ever seeing him again.

Sidney and Darien have a plan that they hope will help to change their world forever and be better not just for them but maybe everyone else as well. Will their plan work? Can they change the world?

I was drawn into this world right from the beginning and I devoured it before I knew what was happening. I loved how all the characters interacted with each other and I could see it playing out in my head as if I was watching a movie I would love to see Our New World on the big screen for real. I can’t wait to see where Sidney, Darien, Colin, and Anne take us on their journeys in the next book.

I would recommend Our New World to all fans of the dystopian and paranormal world with vampires, fae, werewolves and more.

This is my second Ms King and I have to say I really loved it. Star crossed love, best friends, abusive family, oppression from old laws, oppression merely being a woman.... this book has all of it with a heavy side of what is going to happen next. Wonder read that as you go along you can actually put yourself in each character’s shoes when you are reading from their POV. Leaves you on the edge of your seat waiting to see if maybe they can find a Happily Ever After. Appreciate that the characters are truly intelligent even at their age and truly care for their people.

I was asked to read this book based on a brutally honest review I had left of the authors first book written “Moondance”
I agreed to not allow what most would consider shortcomings sway me, and began to read.
I LOVED IT!
A book where humans are the “lesser race” and supernaturals run the world. Higher technologies and futuristic appeals mixed with very old world laws and rituals. I couldn’t put it down!
My ONLY complaint is I wish there was a bit more elaboration on some of supernatural aspects. I know there are to be more stories in this series and I can not wait for them.

Omg what a story ...

This is the first book I have read by Desiree King. Miss King has a fantastic way with words. She brings in the sexism in the old ways were women were just property. How the hierarchy can do anything they won't and be damn with anyone who gets in the way. The storyline is in the future with supernatural.
Sidney the princess of San Diego. Darien the prince of LA. They had been friends since birth, kept away from each other til 17. Anne is Sidney's PA and best friend. Colin is Darien's PA and also his best friend.
There are lots of characters in this book but those are the main ones. Miss King dives into the laws and regulations of the New World which makes the book a real page turner.
Sidney and Darien have lots of love and passion. But Sidney is to marry another.
This book is well worth reading and hoping for another book to continue Sidney and Darien's story.

A very good read, first foray into Desiree King, and I am very happy to report I enjoyed it completely.
The world has changed dramatically, humans are now a race that is on the brink of extinction, Vampires, shifters, fae, elves and other magical creatures have come out of the shadows and taken control.
This story introduces you to a young woman named Sidney, a strong beautiful young woman destined to be the leader of her fathers province, and Darien the beautiful deadly dark vampire Prince. The pair have known each other since small children, and a special bond has developed between them. But the bond has deepened to something more, something smouldering and undeniable, even though they are not allowed by law to be together.
A fantastic story, characters well described, you feel their frustration, their fear, the danger that surrounds them, and a killer they need to uncover. I would recommend this book if you love Vampires, fast paced stories then this is the book for you, cannot wait to read more of Ms Kings books

I love the world created in this story. Other species are now commonplace among humans and mostly getting along. However, there is always strife. Darien and Sidney's story is an amazing beginning to the inter species relationship questions posed. Their assistant's Colin and Anne bring an interesting element as well. I am anticipating more stories in this world.

Again I find myself wishing we could give half stars.
OMG what a wonderful story! Really LOVE it. The characters are beyond worth following, and even the bad guys are able to grab and not let go. For anyone who editing will bother read with caution, as this book does need a good read over. But it doesnt take away from the story at all. This story has everything from magic, to vampires, other magical races, mystery, romance, steam, and just about everything you can imagine. And yet it does NOT feel overstuffed, or outrageously crazy. There is wonderful flow, great interactions, and a beautiful world.
I believe this would be a story aimed at anyone over about 15-ish... There is some sexual content but not horribly hot. The main reason for the -1* is due to this being a cliffhanger... It should let readers know that all though one "chapter" of the story finishes here, the main BIG part of the story is not finished in this book. You WILL have to read the next.

What an awesome book!! I totally enjoyed it!!
What a decision Sidney has to make for her people. She has always loved the Dark Prince and has been told she has to give him up because of the New World Order laws.
Darien is not willing to let her go.Will he follow his love for Sidney or will he let her go?
I would recommend this book to all my friends

What an awesome new world Desiree King had thought up for this story. With a mix of all creatures that make us think of them when something goes bump in the night in this book it is sure to please just about everyone. It is so hard to find a vampire book that is new and fresh that will hold my attention but this one didn't disappoint. I can't wait for the next one.

I have literally spent all of my free time the last few days reading this book. I was so tired last night but it was Soo hard to put down. I absolutely loved it, I thought the characters were intriguing and amazing. I loved the fact that one of the characters, Darien I think it was, used the word douche canoe. This has been my new favorite here lately, before I started reading this book, and I thought I was the only one who used it lmao. It really was a well written page turner. Definitely an adult book. I highly recommend it and cannot wait for the next book to come out.
