As the Chambers family adjusts to being reunited with each other and their fellow camp members, winter starts to barrel down on the cabins at Clear Lake. The worry of impending snow and unknown violent survivors rests heavily on Jack’s shoulders. He’s determined to keep his family and friends safe, but time is ticking and space is running out at the cabins.
Hope is a fragile thing in the new world, but that’s all Jack and Sara have to cling to as they face an uncertain future for themselves and their family. For no longer is the threat against them merely those infected by the virus unleashed by Hurricane Beatrice. While some stay at Clear Lake to protect the only home they have, others must scout out a new place to live that will accommodate them all. Someplace safe, someplace warm. But splitting up may prove dangerous.
Lives are on the line and loyalties are tested as the members of Clear Lake realize that the virus isn’t the only threat out there. They must fight together to not only survive but also to thrive in their new reality, and for some, their new life may end before it truly begins.
Deb has been married to her husband for going on 14 years. They've always had rescued pets, and at the moment, they have 4 cats.
She was born and raised in central Florida. She loves the warm temperatures. She's worked in retail for almost 17 years, but if she were able to do anything she wanted, she would be a full-time reader, writer, and fur-baby mom.
She has always been a big reader, and writing was something she started late in high school, but she began to dabble in it again once she discovered fanfic in 2009. Since then, she's read and written plenty in her spare time, especially since she cannot watch a TV show or a movie without thinking about how she could write a story like it.
Jack and Sara are reunited and living at their property in Oregon. However, as winter approaches it becomes obvious the group must find a more secure place if they plan on making it long term in the new world.
This is a bit more of found family-ish as the crew set up a more permanent survival situation. I was a bit frustrated that Derek and Lexi’s plot point got drawn out into this book because it seemed a bit overblown but ultimately it was all handled maturely and made sense in the long run. I felt bad for Brody, I felt everyone was too hard on him, so I was sad he didn’t get his redemption. This is fairly slow paced, a bit long towards the end, because it’s just a lot of day to day things that Jack and Sara deal with as a couple. So in a way it’s kind of cozy despite the dark setting. Some plot points I cared less for than others but ultimately I don’t regret spending more time with this couple. They are super sweet.
Great sequel. I love that it shows the truly hard part of the apocalypse, surviving after the initial collapse of society. So much of who survives the beginning would be luck for most people and getting to the point where they are self sufficient and society starting to rebuild is my favorite. 5/5 again
I really enjoyed reading this book. I have re-read it a few times and it never disappoints.
The journey that the group but especially the family takes is something that anyone could relate to when they are experiencing tough times in their life. The takes on zombies and there reaction to the weather was something that I was not expecting.
