Going Up

Rate this book
Margaret Vincent Foster came into the world with two things: money and a rebellious streak. She can’t find the love of her life, so she fills the void by dating characters you would normally only find in the drunk tank on a full moon. She’s the girl your parents never thought to warn you about. She will steal your heart, and maybe a little bit of your soul.

Maggie’s only goal is to not end up like her socialite parents and their friends. They want her to settle down and be comfortable, and all Maggie can think about is a boy in a Star Wars costume she met half a lifetime ago. Her prized velvet Elvis and celebrity hair clippings in tow, she drags everyone along as she carves her own path in the world.

When others are going down, Maggie is going up.

This was exactly like in the movies. Except it was Finn and he was saying he loved me. I was in my own Hallmark movie. And I was nailing it.

The Elevator Series has become one of my most favorite RomComs ever! It’s so utterly hilarious, I would have to say it’s like RomCom on CRACK. This is one of the few times that I took a chance on a brand new author and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made. When I read ”GOING DOWN”, I don’t think I ever laughed so hard in my life or fell completely in love with both the Hero and Heroine. When the next book, ”GETTING OFF came out, I worried that it wouldn’t measure up to its predecessor, but I quickly learned that I had no reason to doubt Katherine Stevens. That second book might have been even funnier than the first. Now in GOING UP the main character is Maggie, who has always been an amazing secondary character in the previous books, but she shines so bright as the main character of her story! Maggie turns out to be even more vivacious and kookier than her bestie, Cici!

Maggie Vincent is a young woman who marches to the beat of her own drum, and never fails to let her freak flag fly!! She grew up in high society but fought against being labeled and held on to her strong individuality. Her parents tried relentlessly to set her up with guys who were in their social circles but only to face Maggie’s stubborn defiance that often ended up in embarrassment for them. But her parents were only coming from a place of love for their daughter and you can’t help but adore them for putting up with all of Maggie’s crazy choices of truly freaky boyfriends!

The story starts from when Maggie was sixteen and progresses all the way to the present. Maggie has always been a sci-fi geek and collector of odd Hollywood artifacts. She has a velvet portrait of Elvis in which his belt lights up, and many different celebrity hair clippings. Maggie is able to guilt her mother in chaperoning her to Comic-Con in San Diego. It is there that she meets the most perfect boy, named Finn. They spend the entire day together and it was an instant attraction that formed between them. They exchange numbers when Maggie had to leave with her mom and unfortunately she doesn’t hear from Finn again after several failed attempts to call him, his number is disconnected. But Finn never leaves her thoughts for many years to come. He’s the star of most of her naughty dreams and just might be the reason she habitually picks Mr. Wrong!

 photo Going Up Teaser 2_zpslgj57j6v.jpg

We follow her through to her college years, which is where she meets Cici. They were roommates throughout college and formed such a beautiful friendship. To me, I felt this was the relationship that was the crux of this story and although there is some romance and schmexy to be had, the majority of the story is about Maggie and Cici’s friendship. I had thought that Cici was the crazy and lovable heroine but where Cici was a total clutz and prone to get herself into the most embarrassing situations, Maggie is the most outlandish and eccentric person to ever inhabit the pages of a book. She was up for any kind of wild and crazy adventure and picked the absolute weirdest guys to be her boyfriends. Maggie dragged Cici with her to all her nutty escapades and even though she may have protested time and time again, Cici was always there for her friend and vice versa. This is the kind of friendship every woman should have!

Maggie does find her true love and he couldn’t be more perfect! They were destined to be together. Although the romance doesn’t start until the last half, I never felt like it took away from the enjoyment as I said the main focus for me was the friendship.

I love this series so much and will be sad to have to say goodbye to it. I hope that Katherine Stevens will consider writing at least one more book.

GOING UP is LIVE!! If you haven’t read the previous books, I highly recommend them. These characters will become a piece of you like they have of me!

Book Review: 5 Fangirl Hilarious Stars

WOW!! Just WOW!! This book was fascinating!! I was laughing all the time, or smiling or just falling in love with these amazing characters. I loved Maggie back when I read Going Down and Getting Off , but I didn’t really understand her. Not really. The truth is that She’s AMAZING. She’s a fangirl of heart. She was passionate about the things she loved. She was spontaneous and fearless, and sometimes she was a little naive. And one of the things I loved the most about Maggie was how she loved deeply her family and friend Cece. And Finn, Oh. My. God. Finn. My new book boyfriend! They were just perfect for each other. He was just as awesome as Maggie, funny and smart, their sense of humor was ridiculous and that made them even funnier. *smiles* They were far from boring, how all adults should be. Well, at least that’s how I see it. I see a lot of myself in both characters and that made me love this book even more.

Going Up is mainly the story of Maggie. It starts with an insight of her young years. How a girl who was borned with all the privileges wanted nothing of that. Well, kind of. She didnt want the stiff lifestyle, but she wanted the money, I mean, she needed it for all her fangirl obsessions. She started collecting all related to Star Wars, comics, Elvis and everything that could come to her mind, like locks of hair of her favorite celebrities— if I lived near my fav celebrities, I’d do the same. What? Don’t judge me. I’m a fangirl too hahaha —The fangirl life wasn’t cheap and Maggie wanted the best things, always. In One trip to San Diego Comic-Con, she met a fan boy named Finn, they clicked instantly, shared a whole day jumping from one stand to the other, fangirling— and fanboying —about everything and anything. It was like a dream came true for Maggie. But… Despite they exchanged phone numbers, they never got the chance to contact each other. Over the years they dream about each other, the best and most erotic dreams ever, and after so many years, they decided it was time to just forget about that dream boy and dream girl, and move on, but what got them together the first time, got them together one more time: Comic-Con.

A book full of metallic cosplay, star wars, crazy mini dates and the most amazing coincidence ended up being one helluva story. I love Katherine’s writing, how she develops her stories, her characters, how she adds the most ludicrous situations and creates amazing books. Her craziness fills my heart and I need more of this in my life. I recommend this book to all the Rom-Com lovers— I’m sure a movie of this book would be hilarious . It could be read as standalone, but if you want to have the best fun while reading, start with Going Down and Getting Off , Cece and Cole’s story.

Oh I loved the first one in this series - loved loved loved it! And the first few chapters were a yes yes yes all the yeses. I am devastated I didn't like this one because I love this author. Boo for me :-(

The set up for the love story takes up 50% of this book. 50%. I nearly gave up at 47% because there had been one 16 year old kiss at the beginning and then.... nada.... then our love interest comes back and he is basically a clone of our heroine. But more man-like and in glasses. I loved the kids kookiness of our gorgeous girl but I also think sometimes you can get too much kooky so that it pushes into unbelievable. Which is amazing for me because PNR is one of my top genres.

I hate myself for not loving this. I shall go and beat myself now.

An over the top romantic comedy!

Maggie is a sweet, naive girl, just trying to break the mold. She's unintentionally hilarious, daring, and always has a plan. Her best friend tries to help her keep her head on straight as Maggie goes out of her way to defy her parents. She's a true one of a kind.

Finn is unexpected. We don't get to know him as much as we get to know Maggie. The whirlwind relationship he takes Maggie on is one of fun and adventure. He's indulgent and ready for anything.

I found my self giggling, just waiting to see what was going to happen next. Going Up is a very quickly paced story, jam packed with laughs as we watch Maggie wade through life.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book. Having read Katherine's previous stories, I couldn't wait to dive in. The main characters, Maggie and Finn are so hilarious and unique. They will certainly make any girl's inner geek swoon. I was laughing out loud from the first paragraph through the end. I had a HUGE grin on my face when I finished. This story is funny, sweet, and sexy. It's my favorite from Ms. Stevens to date. If you're looking for a fast-paced, feel good book, look no further. Going Up is a definite hit!

Katherine couldn't have written a better match for Maggie than she did with Finn. I adored Maggie in the first book, but absolutely fell in love with her this time around! Katherine has an over the top sense of humor that will keep you in stitches the entire book.

Not only do we get to know the love of Maggie's life, but we also get to see the beginning of the relationship between CiCi and Maggie, and it was magnificent.

There are so many quotes I want to throw out there from this book, but I'm sure that amazon would block every single attempt I made, so I'll just tell if you want to laugh so hard you cry, swoon and meet the nerdiest socialite you need to pick this book and get ready for a good time!

I voluntarily received an advanced review copy of this book and chose to review it.

I'm sorry, but these two were just too weird for me. Maggie was insane and totally out of touch. Finn was slightly better. I felt there was way too much time setting everything up, almost half the book was stuff I didn't really care for, and not enough time on the romance. Sorry, it just didn't do anything for me.

Well, well, well... my cherries went Up, Up, Up & straight into oblivion after reading this book by Author Katherine Stevens.

OH boy my inner geeky girl totally came out in full force with this book!

Who doesn't love a strong, crazy, silly cosplaying chick who is looking for her Han Solo she once found a long time ago in a teenage galaxy not so far away.

Oh my Finn!!  That cover is perfect picture of the gorgeous and equally geeky fanboy that you will totally FANGIRL over.  Seriously if this man exists, tell me where and when to meet him here in NYC.

Loved the visually stunning words that came to life as I read their story.

Seriously this quick funny read is one to go pick up in this series!

May the A99 Aquata be with you! (You have to read to get the reference)

***6 LIGHTNING BOLTS***
Katherine Stevens has created a hysterically comedic book, with an incredibly quirky heroine, and a terribly sweet second chance romance. Going Up" folks, has the BEST "Meet Cute" in the Business! You can quote me!!! Katherine Stevens' "Going Up" is the second book in her Elevator Series. Though it's a stand-alone Cici and Cole, from "Going Down", make a significant appearance. Maggie level of "eccentric" makes Cici look "normal". Finn, is the Hero, who is almost as "unique" as Maggie. He started a company with friends from college and made his own. Like Maggie, Finn is a Sci-Fi aficionado, a bit of a geek, and spontaneous. While Maggie's Big and Brash and mows down anything and anyone in her way Finn is Good-Humored, Charming, and Sweet. But they are definitely one heart and one soul. "Going Up" features Maggie's backstory including her meeting Cici, and all of her notorious boyfriends.
"Going Up" is snort out loud, laugh until the words are blurry with tears, good time reading. The pace is good and the storyline is amusing and intriguing. This is one of those romances where the Hero and the Heroine don't "really" have sex until the bitter end. HOWEVER, the sex they do have, before they meet, is HOT. When they DO get together it's a whirlwind of Shock and Aw! Notice not "Awe" but "Aw". Consequently Maggie and Finn's ultra-spontaneous personalities cause them to be unrestrained and borderline illegal, but oh so romantic. The secondary characters are Gold! Maggie's beleaguered mother is wonderful. Her unflappable father, when he's ruffled is firing on all cylinders. Then the infamous past boyfriends. Lake, the smelly, dreadlocked commune dweller. The rodeo clown. Ramone - poor Ramone. GOLD I tell you!!! I don't think I could love this book any more if I tried.
I ADORE the romance in "Going Up"! After Reading it more than once, I grin like a loon, envisioning the Fairy-Tale-like whimsical utopias Comic Cons must be. Katherine Stevens does a magnificent job with the characters of Finn and Maggie. Finn's geeky charm hob-nobs with an almost guileless childlike joy. Maggie is a rebel force, an unconventional free-spirit on a mission. She's extremely complex because she has so much passion to be unique and different from her parents. She doesn't want to be like them nor does she like what their money represents. But she doesn't hold the mirror out far enough to see the entire picture when she's looking at herself. Maggie's not that far off from what her parents are exactly. Katherine Stevens has the internal monologues on point. Both "Going Down" and "Going Up" are worth reading. But "Going Up" is definitely an amazing Romantic Comedy!

Maggie and Finn were two same peas in two different pods waiting to be plucked out and thrown into one bowl and then... I don't know where I'm heading with this metaphor anymore. Ignore me.
I loved this story so much I was even contemplating lowering the rating of the first books. That's how much I loved it, people!
I think I'm gonna stop writing now because I'm afraid I start talking about peas and pods again.

A sweet light funny romantic read. I absolutely loved this story and characters. There is laughter. There will be swoon-worthy scenes. There is some chaos in it! Some gross things in it (Toe nail clips collections). I absolutely loved the dialogue and the fun banner between Maggie and Finn, these two are both a little crazy and crave, desire and need each other. They are all so warm and caring. And I think it's wonderful to be able to read about the characters from the past story. Will they be able to make it work, you will have to read it to find out.

Get ready to laugh your butt off!

If you loved the hilarious mess that is Cole and Cici from Going Down (and Getting Off), you are going to flip for Maggie and Finn.

Maggie is one of a kind. She marches to the beat of her own drum and some people are just lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you look at it) to get caught in the crossfire. She's loud, quirky, opinionated, and nothing like the refined socialite she was intended to be. There's no one out there that can match her level of crazy.

Or is there?

Though she only met him once, for the briefest of time, Maggie knows Finn was the perfect guy for her.

Ah, Finn... The nerdy, quirky, adorable apple of Maggie's eye is all grown up now and who knew he'd turn out to be sooooo sexy?

I LOVED this story! I can't tell you how many times I had to explain to my husband why I was laughing out loud. Do yourself a favor and snag this book, pronto. Get lost in Maggie's shenanigans and get pulled into a heartwarming story you never saw coming!

Five fantastically hilarious stars!!!

Helena Hunting posted a link to this book, I read the blurb and well I obviously decided to give it a whirl! And I am glad I did!

Katherine has a great sense humor---this book was laugh out loud funny! Personally I think comedy is hard to do, if you go overboard you miss the mark and everything just falls flat. That was definitely not the case with Going Up. I had so much fun laughing out loud in public places (awkward side glances make the situation funnier)!

Don't make the same mistake I made and wait so long to read one of her books because this one definitely made me a fan! Now I have to buy her other books asap!

Sometimes you just need an over the top laugh out loud dramatic silly read and this book is definitely that in abundance

Maggie meets Finn when she's 16 at Comic con but due to unforeseen circumstances she can't get in touch with him afterward. So let her years of bad dating commence she picks the worst possible suitors and the blatant attempt of her mother setting her up with suitors she thinks are suitable is a match made in mayhem. I loved Maggies niavety and her lust for all things strange and wacky which was really refreshing for a rich spoilt little girl and made me love her all the more.

Fast forward the years and tada Maggie and Finn are reunited once again at comic con at this point in the book I don't think I could laugh anymore but boy was I wrong so wrong the hilarity just keeps coming and there relationship is just fabulous. I'm not a big fan of insta-love but it really works in this instance as they both never forgot the one they met as teens so it was like all the years in between never happened let the whackiest, funniest craziest whirlwind commence!!!!!

This is without doubt one of the funniest books I've read in a good while and my first by Katherine Stevens and definitely won't be my last a laugh out loud 4.5 stars from me!!!!!

Hysterically funny!! Try reading this at work - when you're supposed to be working and NOT reading - and keep your snorts of laughter to yourself. I survived. Good thing I wasn't drinking water or I might have drowned!

Maggie is crazy. Full-on, the world is her oyster, cray cray. And I LOVE it! She is full of the unexpected and she keeps you guessing! And her relationship with her parents - her mother especially - reminds me of Lorelai Gilmore in a way. At 16, she is able to convince her mother to take her to San Diego for Comic Con. While there, Maggie meets the male version of herself, Finn, and immediately clicks with him. And they lose touch after a magical afternoon.

We go through the years and understand that Maggie has always been different and beats to the tune of her own drum. Meanwhile dreaming of Finn and the connection they had....

And that's all I'm saying. You want a dose of hilarity, sweetness, crazy quirks, READ THIS!!!

This was hilarious and completely over the top.

Maggie is one of the sweetest girls and she’s completely hilarious. Maggie is determined to defy her parents while her best friend is there to try and keep her from losing her path.

Finn is as charming as he is sweet. Finn and Maggie are a perfect match, they belong together. Their relationship is fast paced just like this book.

This book has so many moments that will have you laughing out loud no matter if you're in public or not. I couldn’t wait to see what was happening next. This book is perfect if you need a book that will just make you laugh and laugh. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a hilarious romantic comedy. I would also recommend you checking out the rest of this series.

I'm in two mind with this book, which seems to a running theme for me at the moment.

With 'Going Up' I found it quite slow for the first half of the book, until we were reunited with Fin. From that point it was like a whirlwind. Everything happened so fast it was ridiculous and so far fetched.

I liked Fin and Maggie, they had their niggles which annoyed me especially when Maggie completely blew Fin off once she found out his surname. That was just a little too dramatic even for Maggie.

This was just a crazy, over the top read which was funny in parts but didn't have me completely creased with laughter like I was expecting or looking forward to.

What a hilarious story of girl meets boy, boy loses girl...literally, and boy and girl find each other years later.

Maggie was born into a world of privilege, something that she didn't want. She never fit into the cookie cutter mold that others tried to put her in, lucky for her, she had parents that found a way to live with her brand of crazy. When she was a teenager, she convinces her mother to let her attend a certain event and it was there that she met her other half, the boy who completed her. Unfortunately for both of them, that would be the last time they saw each other.

Fast forward several years later, Maggie, having gone through a series of hilarious and interesting relationship mishaps still pined for this man. A chance meeting brings them together again and more hilarity ensued.

From beginning to end this book had me in tears. Not from sadness, but the overwhelming amount of laughter. I nearly peed my pants during certain parts I dare not mention to prevent spoilers. I've never thought a couple was more deserving to be together than Finn and Maggie. She was the ying to his yang, the Patrick to his Sponge Bob and the Leia to his Hans Solo.

The best part for me was when they finally see each other again. That kind of relationship that stands the test of time is what makes this book special. I would love a follow up to this story because I think Maggie and Finn definitely have more to say.

Five Stars!

The prologue just sets the story up perfectly.
The story follows Maggie’s life growing up from around the age of 16, through college and into adult life with hilarious adventures along the way.
Maggie’s upbringing has shown her exactly how she doesn't want her life to turn out and she's avoiding dating all men relating to that life. Finn is a sweet and charming everything Maggie thinks she wants.
Im not sure who’s funnier Maggie or her mother Vivian but they both cracked me up.
What I loved about this book was that it wasn't just funny in places but funny the whole way through.
If you're looking for a funny romantic read with all the feels then this is for you, although not necessary, I would recommend reading Going Down first as some of the characters are also in Going Up and its just as hilariously funny.
