Rain Must Fall

Rate this book
Jack Chambers was all the way across the country—separated from his family—when life as he knew it came to a screeching halt. A virus straight out of a horror movie has been unleashed, turning friends, neighbors, and family members into a walking nightmare. Jack must fight to make his way back home to his wife and son from Florida all the way to Oregon in a world that is determined to kill them all.

Sara Chambers considered herself to be a strong-minded military wife and mother. When her husband is called away for temporary duty, she never thought that her quiet, small-town life would be turned upside down. Following her husband’s frantic instructions, Sara must protect their son, Freddie, and the last remaining members of the small town of Sandy, Oregon, and get them somewhere safe, get them to the one place Jack told her to take them—their cabin at Clear Lake.

The world is no longer safe. It’s kill or be killed. With the odds stacked against them, Jack and Sara fight to not only survive but to hold on to hope that their family can be reunited even against such incredible odds.

About the author

Deb has been married to her husband for going on 14 years. They've always had rescued pets, and at the moment, they have 4 cats.

She was born and raised in central Florida. She loves the warm temperatures. She's worked in retail for almost 17 years, but if she were able to do anything she wanted, she would be a full-time reader, writer, and fur-baby mom.

She has always been a big reader, and writing was something she started late in high school, but she began to dabble in it again once she discovered fanfic in 2009. Since then, she's read and written plenty in her spare time, especially since she cannot watch a TV show or a movie without thinking about how she could write a story like it.

Rain Must Fall is an action driven story, but make no mistake, underneath the chaos and zombies (yes zombies) there is a love story.

A great one.

Sara and Jack are a country apart when disaster strikes. As the world they know explodes around them, they have to fight to get back to each other. Following Jack’s orders, Sara leaves all she knows, taking their son Freddie somewhere safe, struggling to stay alive, and waiting.

She has no idea if Jack is alive and coming back, or if the world will ever be a place she can live in safely again.

Jack, meanwhile fights the enemy to get back to his family. He is determined, strong and make no mistake...damn sexy.

The book goes between the here and now of the battle, and the past history of their story. Both are equally important, and well written.

Not your usual love story…not your usual author.

An amazing read—I look forward to part two!

If you like stories of survival and beating the odds, you'll love this suspenseful, action-packed story! The book begins in the middle of a zombie apocalypse and is told from dual POVs. You get the story of Sara, a mom faced with keeping her son alive and fulfilling her husband's wishes, all while hoping for the best in the midst of disaster. She's smart and courageous, everything a heroine should be. On the flip side, there's Jack, a hero to swoon over. He's strong, determined, and resourceful. He's a military man, so he knows what it's like to be in tough situations. All he wants to do is get home to his wife and son. Their love is tangible, even when they're apart. This story will suck you in from the beginning. Deb does a terrific job at world-building. You'll be craving book 2 by the end.

I read this LONG awaited book from cover to cover by ignoring everything around me. The copy I read before publishing was what started my obsession with zombie and survival fiction. Deb Rotuno is one of those writers with a natural gift to pull you into her fiction world. I cannot wait to see what she has in store for her readers next!

Excellent read, just the right amount of suspense

I read the original, and reading it again in its new form was just as compelling. I love and trust this author - no matter what she writes.

I truly don’t understand how this book has less than 100 reviews. It was excellent. I loved how we saw everything from the beginning of the apocalypse to the community building after the worst was over and society started to rebuild. I loved the main characters, especially Jack, the love interest.

The main couple is already married and established before the series. Their love story is told through back flashes during the breakdown of society. They end up across the country from each other before he fights his way back to her. They are an excellent couple, both strong characters on their own and no too stupid to live moments. The story is told month by month, year by year and covers the first ~3 years of the zombie apocalypse.

The cause of the outbreak was realistic. Virus escapes from super secret government lab after an extremely intense hurricane.

The only thing I would have changed is the first scene. It was a flash forward that I believe spoiled a major plot point. Overall, 5/5 read with 3/5 spice.

I am not, at ALL, a fan of Zombie stories, shows, movies…. anything. However, I have read other stories by Deb Rotuno, totally love her style and know that she is forever a HEA author. I must say…. W-O-W!!! This story was great! There is something for everyone…...suspense, angst, true love winning out over cheating ex’s and being tested while away from your true love. And yes, if you do like Zombies, some tense fighting moments with the Zeaks!

The story does switch back and forth (clearly noted in Chapter Titles), so you are kept up with how each main character is progressing, through their travels or settling in. Jack and Sara start out right from the beginning of their beginning story (again, through clearly noted flash-backs), having to be separated…. but in their earlier times they have communication on their side. Not, at all in the present times. They just have the faith, love and belief that Jack will work his way back to his “Shortcake”! Another aspect of this story, is you just have to LOVE when a husband remains totally faithful to his wife and swoops in to rescue two small children! Not to mention, his best four-footed friend, Sasha....I LOVE THAT DOG!!!

The story, ends with them just getting reunited, but I am sure there is more to come……you are left with a what happens now, type scenario. Zombies are still roaming; friends are still not getting along and there are lives to be intertwined with new rescued characters and one certain character still needs a meeting with either someone’s fist or a life change! But knowing this author, as I said, and her love of HEA; I am very sure there is more to come.

I would strongly recommend this story, even if you are like I was, extremely hesitant about reading Zombies. There is gore (not bad, just “yuck” type), and an early favorite character does meet up with Zombies, but so far none of the more important have had that meeting yet. Some close calls and scary mishaps, lots of tears for missing loved ones. You will love the friendships that are made, romances that are occurring, and a bit sad for some of the unrequited love, which is more hero-worship that love.

By all means……give this Zombie Story a read; you will NOT be disappointed.

Good story

I'm not a huge reader of the zombie disaster domesday but this one was a really good read. I was engaged by the characters from the very beginning. And as the author left us wanting more I hope to see another one of these in the near future.

“Anyway…Wal-Mart…” I snorted, looking to her. “You know, it wasn’t much different in there than before the virus…”

4.5 stars rounded up.

Jack is deployed to an army base across the country from home when a virus breaks out leading to a zombie apocalypse. He must face all manner of danger to get back home to his wife and son in Oregon. Sara, Jack's wife, knows Jack will do whatever it takes to get back to them. She just has to hold on until he can make it home.

This was a great post-apocalyptic romance. I really enjoyed that this was a married couple trying to get back to each other. Told with some intermixed flashbacks to catch the reader up on how these two met and fell in love. It was just very sweet and they are so devoted. It balances the bleak new world very well. We get both Sara’s POV as she tries to establish a safe place with family that has survived and Jack who is on an epic journey across the country picking up survivors as they go. And Sasha! The best doggo.

I couldn’t give this 5 stars because there is a plot point with the mmc’s cousin that just felt unnecessary considering the timeline, but it was minor and I could overlook it. I also hate when grown women giggle. A personal cringe.

Another underrated story of romance and survival and zombies. Not one to miss if this is something you enjoy reading.

"Ava started but faltered and blushed a little. “I’m glad that you’re okay. We came as fast as we could for you."

It’s ‘zeaking’ great

Longtime fan, read absolutely everything written as a hobby and now I’m rereading published. Deb has a way of drawing you into the characters and the plot. I always breeze through a read so quickly that I’m crushed when it’s over.

In a world that faces isolation, a lot of death and a quest for survival as the ‘zeaks’ threaten everything they ever knew. The story proves no one is safe, and there’s everything to lose. Elements of a great story, that leave you wanting more.

Drotuno has done it again. <3

I loved this as a fanfiction story and it was just as great as a published story.
