Although Branford is broken and desperate, he finds himself with no choice: He must declare war against Hadebrand, or Edgar’s evil darkness will envelop the commonwealth. Silverhelm’s army is grossly outnumbered, but Branford underestimates the people’s love for their commoner queen. The people rise up in support of their beloved regent, and Branford sees a glimmer of hope for his wife. He becomes more determined than ever to make up for his previous failures and secure the future of his kingdom.

With their murderous intentions, the treacherous King Edgar and Princess Whitney must pay for what they have done. They must not be allowed to destroy everything the people hold dear.
With but faint hope in his heart, Branford gathers his people and marches toward the castle in Hadebrand, gathering allies along the way. With the support of other noble families, Branford will have to find the strength to fight for the very survival of his own.

He sees only one path: the annihilation of his enemy.

"She was gone. My wife. My life."
description

The Devastation is book 7 in the Unexpected Series, and this series ends with a bang. I have been enraptured by this historical romance series! With each novella, the stakes became higher and higher for Alexandra and Sir Branford to find their happy ever after! With the crazy talents of Shay Savage at the helm, I had no doubts whatsoever that beautiful couple would find their way!

description

At the conclusion of The Apprehension, Alexandra has been abducted and Branford is left with nothing but rage! He is desperate to get his wife back home safely and he will tear down anything in his path in order to have her in his arms again. Branford rallies his troops for the second time, however, now he is prepared and ready to battle! Because of Alexandra's popularity with the kingdom, the people rise up to battle beside their King. All of the lies are uncovered and Branford and Alexandria finally get the happy ever after they so desperately deserved!

Told in Branford's POV, The Devastation was a perfect ending to this series. With a plethora of action, intrigue, suspense, romance, and passion this series needed an explosive finale and Savage serves it up in style! After having Alexandra's POV for the first six books in the series it was an exciting perspective to be in the mind of our broody hero! From the moment he laid eyes on her, he had to make her his. Despite the consequences and circumstances, true love will always prevail!

Overall, the Unexpected Circumstance Series is an absolute must read. Shay Savage never fails to amaze me with her creativity and diverse writing style. This series is by far one of my favorites of 2016 and waiting for each book to be released made me feel like a child on Christmas Eve every single time! I simply could not wait! If you are thinking about reading this series, don't think...just do it! You will be so glad that you did! Branford is one passionate hero that you will want on your KINDLE forever!

This last book was brutal, like medieval torture brutal. I’m both relieved and sad that I’m finished with this epic 7-book series.

This was a rollercoaster of a ride!! I can honestly say all the angst and drama was worth it. It began as a sweet little prince and low-born peasant girl story, then turned into a passionate love affair, then it was almost ripped apart in the most heartbreaking way, then it was a race to the finish, and ended with such a beautiful and touching happily ever after.

I loved this hero so much. It’s been a long time since I’ve read such a deeply honorable character. Leave it to Shay Savage to write a story like this.

I cannot believe that we have reached the end of this epic adventure. Shay Savage has kept me on the edge of my seat over the last few months with the Unexpected Circumstances series, and I am going to miss spending time with Brandford and Alexandra.

And joy of joys, we are finally given Brandfords POV, the previous six novellas have all been told from Alexandra’s POV and I think it was needed in relation to the storyline mainly developing around her and what she was experiencing, but with her kidnapping at the end of the previous novella, and the resulting melt down Brandford inevitably has because of it, there was only one head I wanted to be in as a reader to see how this story ends.

I just wanted her here-with me- no matter what had happened. I wanted her in my arms where I knew she was safe and no one could touch her. I wanted to run my hands through her hair and inhale her scent and tell her I was here, holding her and protecting her… but I could not.

She.

Was.

Gone.

What a ride this series has been, from start to finish the author has pushed boundaries, explored tropes that not everyone is agreeable too, and at points, turned me a little green at the gills from her descriptions of battle and torture synonymous with the times. But through it all has been the building of a truly great love story, this isn’t a couple that did anything by the easy route and the author gave everything a chance to develop between them at a really steady pace rather than rushing to the finish line, all the while building the bigger story between the kingdoms of Silverhelm and Hadebrand around them.

It has been an absolute pleasure to be able to read this series from start to finish, and I hope that Shay delves into the world of Historical Romantic Fiction again, at some point in the future.

The Devastation is the final installment of the seven part serial, Unexpected Circumstances and after the last two parts – I was a little afraid for my kindle, would it survive? How many times can it hit the wall before it breaks? Would Shay Savage send me a replacement if it was her fault it broke? But there was also no way that this book would sit on my kindle unread. No amount of concern would stop me from starting.

We’ve been taken on quite the journey thus far. Sir Branford has taken the handmaid as his wife, he has been crowned king, and he has secured his heir, much to the dismay of Edgar and his daughter Whitney. But the battle isn’t over – it hasn’t really even begun.

War. It’s the only way he can end the reign of terror that Edgar has held over his family. Saving the queen and his child isn’t something he is capable of doing on his own. But when the town learns of what has come to their beloved queen, they come to aid Branford in his quest. But will it be enough? Can he save his town, his people, his child and his queen?

I’ve mentioned throughout the reviews for this series that Historical Romances are not my thing. Not even a little bit – but this is not your ordinary HR. I think that is because of the unique voice that is Shay Savage. There has always been something about her writing that is so different from other authors and it did shine in this series.

I know that book five brought a lot of controversy and it was a hurdle for me as well. But I am so glad that I saw this series through. Savage ensured that the hurt of that part was smoothed over, she made you see it from their POV. From the queen who knew what had to be done – and the devastation after learning it was all for not. It took the angst and the emotions and turned them up. All the way up.

I highly recommend that you give this series a chance. Whether you bought each installment and were waiting for the last to start your read, or you have been on the fence, one-click it and start this serial. You will not be disappointed. You may be frustrated, a little angry and a lot warm and fuzzy – but you will love every second of it.

What a series! Shay Savage is wickedly good and she totally kill it with this historical serial. What started off like a swoon-worthy bodice ripper with a blushing virgin turned into something so dramatic, so bloody that I left me bugging my eyes out. Seriously, Shay Savage does not know hard limit and she really tested my hard limits.

Alexandra was a handmaid from a rival kingdom when Branford first set his eyes on her. Her life is suppose to be humble, mundane and peaceful until the heir of Silverhelm asked for her hand after he won a tournament. From then on, Alexandra life is never the same again. Not only she got herself a royal husband that she soon love, she needs to learn how to be a noble and protect herself against the evil that lurks around their kingdom.

Branford know only revenge and he dedicated his entire life seeking for it. Marrying a commoner wife is suppose to help him trigger an impending war with King Edgar, who he believes got his parent murdered. He is paranoid against all strangers, selfish for his own motivation and cruel at times. After his impulsive decision to get marry, he soon realized that there is more to being a responsible husband that making sure his wife is fed and clothed.

For the entirety of seven long installments, a lot of things, both fortunate and unfortunate befall Alexandra and Branford. From a blushing naive virgin that look upon the world with her innocent eyes and big heart, Alexandra turned into a courageous young Queen who is admire and love by her people. Branford himself also went through so much in his quest of revenge and learn to realize that it shouldn't be his only reason in life.

I thought my favorite part of the series would be the beginning when Branford trying to act like a gentleman while trying to seduce his wife. Waiting for them to finally consummate their marriage really make me a cranky asshole. All these delicious sexual tension left me panting for more. But once I read the final part, I swear I love the battle and drama. It might be a tad gory and very bloody ala Game of Thrones style, and not everyone can stomach it, but it turned this series from awesome to epic.

The Unexpected Circumstances is filled with so much love, drama and some heartache. My emotion went through the wringer for every cliffhanger I had to endure. But everything is so worth it for I got to experience such an epic battle for their ultimate HEA. I wouldn't wish for Shay Savage to change anything at all.

We finally get the hero's POV - and yep he is a jerk!
He is meant to be a king now - you would think he learnt his lessons from the previous war failure - but nope - goes running straight into battle when he learns his wife has been kidnapped (maybe even killed already) - no strategy, no recon, no thoughts of his own soldiers or people (he kills someone who advises him to think things through).
What happens? He goes to the wrong place - if this was real, his wife would really have been killed because of his actions.
There's a happy ever after - don't know why - the heroine is an idiot to stay with him and it's just awful they named their innocent child after the jackass hero (what did the poor baby ever do to them?!?!)

*ARC received from author as part of blog tour*

First, we’ve got Branford’s POV, woohoo!!! Second, this is very fitting ending to this one heck of a ride, yay!!!

This picks up right where book 6 ended so you’re knee deep in the action right from the start. Branford totally kicked a$$ here, all for Alexandra. Kinda’ weird saying that in a historical romance but that’s totally what he did. The blurb tells you what you need to know. This is seeing the events all from Branford’s POV, and I loved it.

In its entirety, Shay definitely took me on a ride that I didn’t anticipate. She threw me curveball after curveball that I honestly didn’t know where the following book will take me. If I think of one part (or 2) in particular, I swear, Shay almost lost me. How could she do that, I thought, and in a romance story to boot! Seriously, I was ready to get upset and all ranty, but I also knew I had to trust Shay’s writing.

See, the funny thing is I never know what to expect from Shay. From her characters to her stories, she does what she does best, the unexpected. If you’re looking for a cookie-cutter trope, Shay might not be the author for you. But if you’re looking to be surprised with your read, then I say put her on your list. Just saying…

Take this serial as a whole, I’ve come to associate Shay with male POV and what did she do here, she gave me the h’s POV, except for the last one. For someone who’s given me broken H’s in contemporary and dystopian setting, she then gave me an understated h in a historical setting. Granted I don’t read a lot of HR, but compared to the ones I’ve read, she still manage to give it a contentious twist that will make you love or hate the story. Clearly, I ended up loving it still. I get it. It’s not what I usually would want to read in my romance books but I thought Shay delivered it well. I didn’t necessarily like or agree with it, but I understood it. As weird as this may sound, it was realistic. In the end, I didn’t think it took away the emotions meant to be devoted only to H&h. AND for a historical read, this has a lot of grit which felt incongruous but appropriate given the harsh times.

If nothing else, if you’re in the mood for HR with a twist, I say you have got to give this a chance.

☆ I received an ARC via the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!! ☆

Oh my gosh. What a finale for the last and final installment of the Unexpected Circumstances series!!

Branford and Alexandra certainly have come a long way and jumped leaps and bounds from Branford merely choosing his rival kingdom's' handmaiden as a strategic ploy, to all out----
transforming into braveheart on us and going all lengths to protect the women he has come to love.

I have to commend author Shay Savage for writing such a thrilling and addictive read as I just loved the suspense around it and seeing both Branford and Alexandra grow and seeing develop together and on their own.

Not to mention~~ seeing Branford come to terms that in order to become the man and ruler he wants to be to his wife, child, and subjects--- that some things are worth fighting for if he ever wants to keep them around, protected.

Yes! I absolutely loved the conclusion to Brandford and Alexandra's story. I have been with them for seven books now and I was so incredibly invested in every single second of it. In this final installment Brandford is out for blood and for some reason that just made me so so happy. He is just such a bad a** and I loved him for it. Not only do we get to see Brandford at his baddest, we get so many little questions answered in this last book, things that I have wondered about since the very beginning. The book is then finished off with sweetest epilogue. If you haven't picked up this different and unique historical romance serial then you definitely should. It has turned out to be one of my very favorites.

I say it again and again but this series gets BETTER & BETTER

I couldn't wait to see how this series ended and I'm so excited that it's Branford's pov. I couldn't wait to read his thoughts and what he was thinking. I loved reading how he reflected on when he meet Alexandra and other special moments. Branford will do anything he has to get his wife and child back. Knowing who is responsible Branford seeks help from the surrounding kingdom but he wants to act quickly and doesn't want to wait. Branford is surprised to see the commoners are willing to fight for their queen and it gives hm hope. Can Branford get to Alexandra in time? Will they have their HEA? This ending was everything I was hoping for & more. This is a series that I will always think about and have in my head. I love Branford & Alexandra together and the love they have for each other. Wish I could give this series more the 5 stars, because it deserves so much more.

*mild spoilers*

This review is for all 7 novellas(?). I'm very careful with this author after the Evan Arden series, which I felt was really mislabeled as a romance, much to the detriment and shock to some of her more tender hearted readers, lol. Having said that, I don't feel like Branford cheated. For me cheating has to be planned or enjoyed. He certainly didn't enjoy it and if he could have gotten out of it he would have, so clearly that didn't bother me. What did bother me and to some extent, shocked me, was the writing. It really felt stilted to me, and considering this authors talent, I felt that was the true betrayal! (Being a little facetious there, sorry.) Trancendence is one of my favorite books ever, not just romance, but truly on my short list of best fiction ever, so I don't criticize her lightly. In fact, it's probably me just getting a little too excited about the fact that she was going out of her usual contemporary box again and I was hoping for another experience like Trancendence.

The overall rating of this series is 3.5-4 stars. If you are in need of something quick but still nice with a depth to tip the scale in your favor(GR challenge wise) go ahead and take a chance on this one , awesome characters , nice writing , alpha male to the core and did I mention he is a knight/king? 'nough said , altho the ending was not as grandiose as I expected it to be , I still felt satisfied at the end.

Thirty Five Stars...

That is what I give the Unexpected Circumstances series by Shay Savage. I loved Branford and Alexandria from beginning to end. To watch them learn and grow with each other was a real treat. Sure there were some major bumps in the road for them (damn you Shay Savage), but like them, I sucked it up and kept moving on.

"If she were gone, I would not be able to do anything. The earth would simply cease to exist if she were no longer in it." ~ Branford about his Queen

Each book left you clamoring for more and book six was no exception. Our beautiful Alexandra was left in the hands of evil and we all know who took her. Her Branford is still young and trigger happy and for once will need to step back and act rather than reacting to the situation.

"She was gone. Now I genuinely knew pain." ~ Branford

I adored how Branford matured in this last book. Not only thinking of himself, but his kingdom and people as well. Taking the time to plan, Branford goes to Hadebrand balls to the wall and finally, finally shows Edgar what he is really made of.

"We would either be victorious, and Hadebrand would be no more, or Silverhelm would fall to Edgar, and we would all perish." ~ Branford

Like the other books, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. There was so much going on in and around the kingdom, I kept wondering how it was all going to play out. One of my favorite things about Brandford is that he takes no prisoners. Man, woman or relative, if you cross him, he will take his sword across your neck. The guy protects those he loves.

Of course The Devastation is well written and from Branford's point of view the whole time. Nice twist to the series. Yes there is some slight cursing of Shay Savage, but nothing like in book five and six. She definitely redeems herself by the end and then some.

And that is when I knew peace.

Blissfully.
Thankfully.
Painfully.
Emotionally.
Seven books later.
FINALLY...

One of my most beloved fictional couples..

Alexandra and Branford found THEIR HEA!

This series was without a doubt one of my most favorite.
Shay Savage is truly amazing but then again, I didn't expect anything less from her after her Caged(Takedown Teague) series.
That was simply the best!

So, this one picks up exactly where the last left off, except a little in rewind.
Alexandra ended up in a dungeon but this one is ENTIRELY from branford's POV and that's why it was the best.
We learned why he was the way he was.

And trust me..being in Branford's head was really painful. My heart literally broke for him because his past was so brutal and fate had been absolutely unfair to him.

Now,when he gains consciousness after his attack and finds out that his wife was taken, he completely loses it.

War starts brewing..
Pain increases..
Secrets unfold..
Past gets avenged..

And finally..

Redemption.

I am gonna miss these two..

I will be reading this one again for sure!

Goodbye Alexandra and Branford ❤

It was made perfectly clear at the end of book 6, The Apprehension, that action against Branford and his Queen had gone too far, sending Branford on a war path of death and destruction; his fury with being unable to protect Alexandra and his unborn child, once again, has driven Branford to the edge, and now there’s only one path for him, which is to reign down terror and devastation on those responsible for kidnapping Alexandra.

But that kind of payback comes at a price and the fact that Branford’s army is by far outnumbered by his enemy’s army lands him in a situation that he may not come back from, but he’s done being played a fool…he’s done feeling trapped in situations that are out of his control…he’s done allowing Alexandra’s kindness and generosity to be taken advantage of…she is his life and it’s time for him to do what needs to be done in order take care of the woman who changed him in so many ways for the better.

Alexandra is the Commoner Queen; she’s the voice of the people and she made sure their needs were met, and now it’s time for Branford and his kingdom to meet the needs of their Queen, and let me tell you, it’s one tale that readers of Shay Savage’s Unexpected Circumstances definitely don’t want to miss because The Devastation is told completely in Branford’s point of view, so that means readers feel his pain…his lack of emotional control…his grief…and his rage. But the one emotion that is felt the most is his undying love for the woman who taught him how to truly be a man and a King.

All good things come to an end! This seven part Historical series has been a great company these past few months and it ending is bittersweet.

All of you who waited to for it to be published, you can now read the complete series back to back and get to know these amazing characters and another shining example of how amazing Shay Savage is and how captivating her books are. I have yet to read a book of hers I haven't at least enjoyed and a lot of hers are my favorites, including this series.

Branford and Alexandra have a final obstacle to overcome and oh my feels they do. This book is from his POV - finally - and it's amazing! Being in his head is so fascinating and I've said this again but Shay can write a mean male POV, so worth the wait!

Kings & Queens, evil Princesses and court drama, this series has it all

POV :: All Branford.
Cliffhanger :: Nope.

Welp, it's come to an end, folks. After all of my complaining, I can't believe it's over. And I'm actually a bit sad about it, if I'm honest. I've been reading about these characters for months - that's dedication, I tell you.

Things were wrapped up nicely in this last installment, told entirely from Branford's perspective. I don't really think he gave me anything more than Alexandra would have, but it was a novelty, nonetheless.

I will say - this is more than a romance. It starts that way, sure. A light, rather silly romance about a member of a royal family marrying a "common" woman. But man, the last two novellas have been much more intense. Barbaric, even. Okay, well, that's pushing it. But things happen. And it's not pretty.

Overall, it's a decent read. Sure, I'm still a little pissy that I went into this not knowing it was going to be part of a seven-part series, but whatever. You live, you learn.

we come to the end of Brandon and Alexadra's story and it was quite a story but of course it was Shay Savage.

This was spun out over 7 parts and for me it impacted the flow of the storyline. I thought it was too drawn out. I am not a fan of Historical books either but due to this being Shay Savage and being in receipt of gift vouchers I gave it a go.

There is a touch of predictability with this series and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to put the finger on the villains and their plots and what the outcome will be - I can almost hear Shay Savage cackling as she was writing this one because the villains were bad.....but it wasn't for me.

This will appeal to fans of historical romance with a bit of darkness added. Just remember to but the whole series will cost you £15.80. Lotta money for a Kindle edition.

The Devastation is the final book in the Unexpected Circumstances series and what a way to go. Branfords POV this time. D it was done well. You felt his pain. His devastation in the kidnapping of Alexandra.

5/5 ⭐

This was the final piece of Branford and Alexandra's saga and after all the heartache and turmoil, I was finally granted the HEA that my heart sorely needed.

I know the previous installments had certain elements that were controversial at best for some readers and deal-breakers at worst.
But I never entertained the possibility of leaving the story unfinished.

I'd suffered right alongside King Branford and his glorious "commoner queen" for far too long to not enjoy sweet revenge, retribution and the reforging of a new kingdom after the war.

This last book healed all the wounds that the previous ones had so brutally inflicted upon me.

This would forever be one of my favorite historical romance slash medieval aristocracy romances.
There was a lot of heartbreak and angst and suffering. But the writer's handling of sensitive topics, even taboo topics, was outstandingly stellar. I am in awe.

And of course, nothing less than a 5 ⭐ for this series.

This last novella is written from Branford's point of view and in my opinion it's the best one of the lot. I needed to find out what happened! It wraps the story up and has a lovely epilogue. If you haven't read any of this series then I recommend you purchase the full set of all seven, as they will read like one large novel. Each novella has a cliffhanger, but of course that's how they were released, with plenty of notice for readers from the author. Well written with excellent character development, set in medieval England. I felt I was there right along with Branford and Alexandra. It's pretty bloodthirsty at times (think Even Arden with a cross-bow and a sword) and there are plenty of sizzling scenes. If I had read all 7 books as one, (I read the first three some time ago and finished the last four in the last day) then I would give them a collective 5 stars. 😍
