"I will return to you.."
description

The Shortcoming is the fourth book in the Unexpected Circumstances Series. I have once again been held hostage by the amazing Shay Savage. With each installment, the saga of Sir Branford and Alexandra continues to intensify. There is nothing better than a love story of two people from different worlds (a commoner and a nobleman) brought together to rule over a kingdom.

description
"You are what made me a man."
Together, Sir Branford and Alexandra are finally together in every possible way. Emotionally they are connected and trust each other implicitly. Individually, Alexandra still struggles to understand the ways of her new world. Branford has no problems tenderly caring for her and helping her through every situation and circumstance and yet, he is still battling his own demons.

Through coaxing from Alexandra, Branford rescues a common slave girl and the royal couple return to the castle with a handmaid for Alexandra. As the neighboring kingdom of Hadebrand threatens to overtake Branford, Alexandra must watch as her precious husband takes off for war. Although their relationship is strong, both feel the strain of being apart. Additionally, the weight of Alexandra and Branford not being able to produce an heir is beginning to weigh heavily on both of their shoulders.
"I love you, my husband. You are everything to me."
Told in Alexandra’s POV, The Shortcoming is the beginning of some difficult times for the happy couple. Finally wed, finally consummated, the honeymoon is “over” and the two are expected to produce an heir. In this instalment, Alexandra finally begins to understand what will be expected of her if she is not able to follow through with that expectation. The reality of what is to come is devastating for her, Branford, and was just as devastating for me! The courting and “happy times” are over and with this ending, we can be assured it’s going to be a rocky ride.

description

Overall, I cannot say enough about this series. Each instalment has been a true delight. The blend of complex characters, historical setting, and natural writing has me completely hooked! The ending in this one is a shocker!!!! I am truly fearful for my sweet Branford and Lady Alexandra. However, if anyone can deliver them, it’s Shay! I am just thankful to be along for the ride! Even if you are not a fan of historical romance, I highly recommend giving this series a try. Once you start, you will not be able to stop!!!

"You are precious to me…"

Oh boy Shay Savage ends this installment with a situation that has me nervous to read on. Branford finally goes to war against his enemy as kingdom battles against kingdom. Our newly married couple has to handle time apart and the effects this war has on their kingdom. Checking to see the title of the next installment with how this story ended, it appears that another woman is entering into this storyline and she's staying.

description

I’m definitely going forward in the series and am hoping that the hero doesn’t let me or his wife down in his quest for an heir. Overall, yet another good read that kind of skimmed over a lot of time actually a whole darn war. I would have liked more during this time period both on the field and between the couple. Still this was a good installment I sure hope I’m prepared for what the author has in store for the next book!

It’s taken three novellas, but I finally fell for Brandford in The Shortcoming, don’t get me wrong he was ringing my lady-bells in the previous instalments, but the connection between him and Alexandra solidifies in this episode of the Unexpected Circumstances series and just like her, my remaining defences completely crumbled.

A lot happens between our couple in this one, what with wars and baby-making, neither of which really going according to plan, the cast of secondary characters extends with the addition of slave turned serf/handmaid Janet, a woman Brandford rescues, in an effort to show Alexandra just how much her being in his life is having on his respect for his subjects, and subsequent treatment of them. Her different perspective and fresh insight makes him want to do and be better, and because of it becoming a man that will one day be a worthy King.

"I would be lost without you now…"

A long separation ensues due to war, and we cover several of years in the span of this novella, the couple’s feelings for each other deepen through their separation and subsequent reconnection, and the bond between them is now rock solid.

Well you would think it is anyway, but I have a feeling that there are more than a few spanners going to be thrown in the works in the next novella at least, with it being titled The Concubine I think you can guess which direction the angst and drama is going to come from going forwards.

"You are precious to me…"

Due for release on the 26th July, the author has me hooked completely to this couples adventure now, I just hope they can overcome the next set of obstacles that Shay has in store for them.

It has been no secret that I am in love with this series. Today, as I finished this book, my love came to a SCREECHING halt. Branford is getting a concubine.

If you know me at all, you know the one thing I don't handle in books is cheating of any kind. Not even the Ross Gellar "We were on a break" shit. It is the reason I have always struggled with Historical Romance and why I avoided it for years. It was much more common in HR for a man to be less than faithful; yes, I understand that it was customary of the times, blah blah blah. I don't read for historical accuracy. Just like I don't read contemporary romance and expect it to be 100% realistic! I read to escape; I can't escape if the hero, no matter what the circumstances, is having sex with someone other than the heroine.

But, let me back up, because the concubine is quite literally the last line in the book. Up to that point you see the relationship with Alexandra and Branford grow into love. He goes to war and things change for his kingdom. I enjoyed the story overall, but it wasn't my favorite of the series. And then the concubine bombshell (concu-shell?) was dropped and I almost threw my kindle. My husband convinced me to see reason and reminded me that I can't afford another kindle right now. Stupid logic...

Now what do I do? I really am torn and super stressed about this!! Do I read the next book and risk getting my heart shattered and not being able to finish? Honestly, I don't know that I would ever be able to read another book without knowing the ending if it turns out badly. Do I stop reading at this point? I am seriously so frustrated! If he cheats, even to produce an heir, I will never be able to enjoy the story. Never. No matter what happens after that point, I will hate him. But, I hate him now because I am just assuming that he will cheat. See? I'm angry already!

Is it wrong to hunt an author down and demand a rewrite? Can someone please recommend a book to me that is light, fluffy, fun, and won't make me want to commit kindle-cide? Please! I am drowning in angst right now and I can't take it!

I am giving this book 3 stars because if I just hadn't read that last chapter, or discovered that the title of the the next book is "The Concubine", I was enjoying the story. Now, I am seriously upset. I never read books where there is cheating, so had I known before I started this series that book 5 would be called "The Concubine" I would have never picked it up. Everyone has things they refuse to read about and cheating is my 'thing-that-shall-not-be-occuring'. I don't want my fiction to be sad. I can't handle it.

Holy angst. In the fourth installment of Unexpected Circumstances, Branford and Alexandra are both tested and put through the ringer. As war is being raged and an heir is yet to be had, the lives of the prince and his princess are about to be shaken up a bit.

Addicted. That is what I am. Shay Savage has somehow not only made me read a historical romance, but she has the nerve to make me addicted to it. My heart was racing and breaking just a bit as I reached the final pages of this book. The angst was off the charts. The connection that we’ve seen these two build over four books has been amazing to experience and we are just over halfway done. My poor freaking heart cannot take much more!!!!

Bravo- Brav-fucking-O Shay Savage. I had no clue when you introduced this series that I’d be this hooked and needy for more.

The whole series is turning into a really bad soap opera. I wish the h had some depth and the H could be likeable. Characters feel like cardboard cutouts. This "story" does not have to be 7 books. I was disappointed with the author and the last book in the Evan Arden series. I'm afraid this series will put her my two author avoidance shelves: "who cares what happens now" and "will never buy authors books again".

Ok - whatever. Not worthy of reading all words - if you get a copy - you can skim. Like I said, not worth 7 books.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!:(

So, Brantford and Alexandra’s relationship continues to flourish here. I love how it’s developing albeit slowly, but I suppose, realistically, if I can call it that. And as their relationship strengthens, Brantford does have obligations to fulfill and tasks to do to protect his realm. Alexandra has in a way found her footing in her abode with her husband. Brantford continues to be the attentive husband who only wants to do right by her, and his people.

The title of the next book will give you a good indication of what’s to come. Nooooo!!! Say it ain’t so?... Ok, calm down, Elle, this is Shay!

Shay, Shay, what are you doing to me??!!?! Why would you end it that way???:( Now you just made me very nervous:o

☆ I received an ARC via the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! ☆

Wah, I was so not expecting that ending. Here, while things were already twisted enough, I thought that things couldn't possibly get worse than this and I was wrong. Alexandra, gosh, do I feel for you and all of the upheavals you have to and I worry about Branford's heart and duty tearing him to pieces if he is forced to go through this next set of events. I REALLY HOPE that it does not come to pass and that a miracle occurs. Good lord, Shay Savage you put me on edge with anxiousness and trepidation. Seriously going to give me a heart attack. I NEED bk5 NOW!!

This series gets better and better. With Branford and Alexandra getting closer together and learning more about each other, their feelings are growing. But when an attack happens Branford must go to war and leave Alexandra. Alexandra is devastated by not having Branford around is not taking care of herself and finally a threat from the Queen has her finally doing as Branford has asked of her. Finally with the war over and devastating losses, Branford now wants to focus on an heir and Alexandra is struggling. What happens at the end has my heart breaking and hoping Alexandra and Branford will finally get what they truly want

Alexandra and Branford's love affair really begins, the more time they spend together and the more adversity that comes their way only brings them closer. Alexandra starts to relax and come into her own as a princess with the help of the Queen. Branford starts to realize he needs to do even more as a husband and as a future king. But, there is trouble on the horizon, things will not be easy for these two love birds.

This story just keeps getting better and more exciting with every turn of the page! I can't wait for the next book!

Okay, I loved this one too, but I'm mad, angry, just name it.
I don't have my next book and I certainly wouldn't have the 6th installment!
This one showed determination, and also the side of what king, queen should do for the sake of their people.
Yes, now that they consumed, I have to read scenes from another era, but I just fast reading those. Even, with those scenes, I didn't love this book any less, those scene just strengthen their blossoming love.

But the end...... grrrrrrrrr

Reviewing book #4 and #5 together because of the continuation of the books.

The Shortcoming and The Concubine have cause quite a bit of drama between readers. The Shortcoming brings a lot of new people into the story and war. But that is still not as alarming as what the ending of the book brings. For the short period Alexandra and Brandford have been married, they still are childless; to historical romance, heirs and thrones are always a thing, so understandably that cause a stir and gives rival kingdoms a reason to get involved in the plot. The ending of the book suggests that another woman will be entering the plot. As a concubine.

I remember when I read that part the first time - as a fanfiction - I  was shocked. But more importantly I was on the edge, I wanted to read it, I wanted to devour it, I wanted to know how these two will get over it and read it I did. Why? Because it's historical romance. Unlike contemporary - in which sex with another person is cheating - historical romance - history itself - has a history of blurring the lines and getting things done (heir) no matter what.

I've never been a King in my lifetime, but I guess taking my wife and saying screw it I'm not doing my duty - which I've been groomed for my entire life - and living this place, you people are mean and you suck, I'm in love with my wife and the kingdom can go fuck itself. Said no King. Ever.

What I don't understand though is the double standard. The Handmaid made it clear that Princess Whitney was supposed to be the one that Brandford should have chosen; instead, he bypassed her and basically ridiculed her in front of her court. But literally not one reader gave a crap about her. No one said, you know what, there's something going on between those two and he treats her like crap, shame on him. But when it comes to the lead character, everyone looses their mind.

You either want your historical books to be historically accurate, or you don't. You either want your male lead character to be noble or you don't. You can't choose moments and reject others. Books have moments we love and moments we hate, those can be back to back, or in different parts of the book, we hate some parts because we are emotionally invested in the story and it personally hurts us; but it hurts because we love it. Can you truly hate a book you've loved so far because you hate a part of it?

That rant being said, I understand that The Concubine may not be everyone's cup of tea and cheating is a no-no for a lot of readers but also it would help to keep in mind the setting of the story. This isn't set in 2016, it's the medieval times where Kings would take mistresses from their Queen's court no less - anyone who didn't love watching The Tudors? Because he was all over that court. Having a character like Branford so torn and so broken up about it but also Alexandra in this huge character arc should be noted. Kings and Queens are not ordinary book characters that can afford to break the rules and go out of the norm - for them - just so the plot can be pleasant.

Overall, I love Shay Savage's books and I look forward to the next one, that will be a stunning book!

Okay um, I'm gonna need book five like RIGHT NOW. Good grief, it felt like I was going to have a heart attack while reading The Shortcoming. Page after page you can see Shay Savage building up to something (which I kept hoping wasn't bad) and then BAM! Then End. Book hangover commences as you wait (thank goodness just a few weeks) for the next installment.

Hands down, this fourth book was the best and yet the worst in the series. We get to see a totally different side to our Branford and I really liked it. Him and Alexandria are starting to work as a beautiful team. Learning more and more about each other and of course, having some great sex.

When Branford chose the handmaid over princess Whitney, he knew there were going to be some ill feelings towards him. What he didn't realize is that he would start an all out war and now has to leave his new bride to fight for his kingdom.

Weeks apart not only solidified their love, it also showed Branford how serious things were about to come in the castle. He has big shoes to fill and will need to start making moves towards that sooner rather than later. Not that he doesn't mind putting the work in, however doesn't seem to be getting the results he wants. It's no secret after seeing the title for book five, but I'm not sure I want to see that happen to Branford and Alexandria, as it will change everything.

Ugh this book. After finishing it, I started thinking it would have been better killing Branford off in the battle, rather than what he is up against next. I so loved these two as a couple and man, Shay Savage is going to test her readers with what is up her sleeve for them in the next installment. I'll be here for it of course, maybe not too happy, but reading it none the less.

The book is well written and gives us more and more to think about with this young couple. I'm so glad it's a novella series and there isn't months, but weeks to wait for the next one.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

Unexpected Circumstances:The Shortcoming is the fourth book in this historical romance series from Shay Savage. You must read the first three books to not be really lost. There are seven books total in the Unexpected Circumstances Series each releasing two weeks apart.

As Branford and Alexandra's relationship continues to grow Alexandra finds friendship with a girl Branford saved from slavery and her master and was made her handmaid. Alexandra is learning and things could not be going better. But with all smooth sailing war is the bump in the road along with the need to produce an heir.

I am so addicted to this series!! It's absolutely amazing. Branford is becoming one of my favorite male characters and it's so much fun to watch Alexandra learn and grow in her role of being a noble. Their relationship is just one you can't help but have high expectations for and watching them fall in love is a beautiful thing. I think we see that growth so much in this book. So much so it lulls you into your comfortable bliss spot and then bam slaps you right up the side of the head. HARD!!!! Kindle throwing, bad words flying, oh no she didn't hard. Needless to say I want that fifth book now even though it has the potential to change my whole Unexpected Circumstances world.

If you've not started this series your missing out and have four books out now to read. I've never been a fan of historical romance but this series is at the top of my list as favorite all time. Don't let the historical keep you away or your missing out on something absolutely amazing. If anyone can make you love a historical romance if it's not your thing it's Shay Savage.

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

The Shortcoming is the fourth book in the Unexpected Circumstances series. In this installment, Branford and Alexandra are growing closer and learning what it means to really be there for one another. When war breaks out, Branford must leave Alexandra, and neither one of them deal with being separated very well. However, it is during this absence that Alexandra realizes just how important her role is. She knows that she must be strong for the people of the kingdom. When the war is over, Branford places his sole focus on creating an heir to the throne, but nothing seems to be happening in that department. For fear of spoilers, that is all I can share.

I tell ya this series has become an addiction for me! I just can't get enough of Branford and Alexandra! Their relationship is real and heartwarming! I would be remiss if I didn't tell you that this one ends with a whopper of a cliffhanger! This may leave you wanting to toss your kindle out the window. All I can say is bring on the next book ASAP!

OMG! What are you doing to me, Shay? I can't stand this anticipation of the next book without being a wrecking ball of emotion. I'm so scared that I actually plan to ask someone to spoil me later.

In actuality, The Shortcoming is a good read. Branford and Alexandra are heating up the sheets. Despite being a short read and filled with multiple sex scenes, I have no complaints. They even get much more closer than ever and I finally some really good characters development. Branford is getting wiser and more mature and Alexandra started to learn about ways of being a noble.

But let's not forget about the title, The Shortcoming. Our dear couple seems to face some problem in procreating and with that awful cliffhanger, I'm seriously worried about them. I've gotten so attached to them now that I can't bear to read the oncoming angst.

I'm holding out hope that Shay Savage will not disappoint me.

Every cover for every book in this serial is seriously amazing. They are all so deliciously historical but somehow modern and sexy! I love them. Now that I have gotten that off of my chest, let's get to the nitty gritty of Branford and Alexandra's story this go round. They are back with all the drama and anxiety of war that comes with time era. God, this one was good. Because so many things are in the works and I have a ton of theories about how this is all going to play out but I have a feeling this author will surprise me anyways.

"God must have had some plan in mind, because He gave you to me. But the cost...so...but you are so, so worth it to me."

(SWOON)

This serial just keeps getting better and better. I honestly was expecting things to kind of even out as far as the story goes but Shay Savage has managed me keep me on the edge of seat through every installment of Unexpected Circumstances. I CANNOT wait to see what happens next. These are must read, folks! Grab them all. Now!

Things seem to be looking up for Alexandra: she is growing closer to her new husband and adjusting to her new station and surroundings. She convinces Branford to try and save the young slave girl she found being brutalized. He reluctantly acquiesces and allows the girl to come back to Silverhelm with them as Alexandra’s handmaid.
Shortly after their return, Branford has to ride into war, leaving Alexandra worried. She fears for her husband’s life and realizes she cannot envision a life at court without him. Queen Sunniva guides her in properly conducting herself as the Prince’s wife during this troubling time.
With the war eventually over, Branford is now focused on securing an heir. When Alexandra appears unable to provide this, a decision is made that devastates her and might impact her status at court.

The author shows Alexandra’s character development in a natural way. She was used to a life as a servant, uneducated and overlooked, then thrust into a new life at a foreign court. This sudden change requires some adjustment; not only physically, but also mentally. It would be very unrealistic for Alexandra to embrace her new role without any difficulties. Indeed, she struggles and makes some mistakes, but she is determined to learn and prove herself a worthy wife to the heir to the throne. As her feelings for him grow, they serve as an even greater motivator.
She also realizes that she is in a position of power over the people of the kingdom, and should not take this lightly. In this book, for example, not only does she use her position to implore Branford to save the young slave girl Janet, but she also realizes the result of her earlier plea to her husband to spare the life of their carriage driver. This in turn shows Branford that compassion will be rewarded. As King Camden and Queen Sunniva also note on several occasions: Branford’s rash choice of bride has so far proven beneficial for all involved – well, except perhaps King Edgar and Princess Whitney.

Book 4 is another captivating read in this series. I am eager to discover the next developments.
