The summer after college, Amelia Chase lands a coveted position as the personal assistant for the brilliant, yet reclusive, Grant Palmer. Grant’s aloof nature and obsessive-compulsive behavior leads Amelia to rethink her position until Grant steps in to rescue her during a bizarre kidnapping attempt. She soon realizes Grant is a man of many secrets, all hidden behind an elaborate façade of self-discipline and control. Grant Palmer spends his days in an expensive suit and tie, funding charitable works for his family’s Foundation. His nights are reserved for patrolling the small city of Asheville and the bordering mountainside in an effort to protect residents from rogue vampires. Why? He has his own collection of kills to atone for from his own days as a rebellious, blood thirsty killer. Amelia and Grant’s professional relationship turns personal, distracting Grant from his duties. As the number of victims rise, it becomes apparent that a predator in the hills of North Carolina has a vendetta against Grant. Aware of Grant’s increasing interest, possessing Amelia is one way for this killer to enact his twisted revenge.

***EDITED on 9/14*** (see bottom half of review after the spoiler tags)

3.75 stars of great potential that will definitely have me reaching for the sequel when it's available

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Key word here is "honest." I'm going to try to be as polite and respectful as possible, but I need to be honest about why I didn't give this book a higher rating.

Alright, so I had really high hopes when I heard this was being published as an original story and that the fanfic version had undergone major editing and changes; unfortunately, the book just didn't meet my expectations of what I thought this would mean. In order to explain why this was the case, I need to get into certain aspects of P2P that I guess I have issues with (honestly, I haven't read many P2Ps before; this is only the second I've read, and now I have an idea of what bothers me about it when it is done in different ways).

There are 2 main types of Twilight fanfic stories out there:

1) There's stories where Twilight characters are practically made into original characters; fanfic writers change the personality of the characters so much that the characters no longer resemble the original characters in anything other than name and physical appearance. Sometimes, these are AH stories while sometimes they are supernatural/vamp stories

2) There are stories where characters remain true to who they are in the actual saga; and, in these stories, the most original aspect is the plot which is completely different than Twilight

In the case of #1 type P2P stories, I get really annoyed if authors claim they have changed a lot from the fanfic version to make the original published version new in some way. In this case, the characters remain as they were in the fanfic (because in the fanfic, they're already written in an original way), but the author adds something to the plot so that the plot is not exactly the same as it originally was on FFN. I've come across such a story where the author claimed to have changed a lot when in reality, she really didn't. (No, I'm not going to name the author or story title.) This led to me returning the copy of the e-book that I got.

Angel Lawson actually did change a bit in the plot of her published work which I greatly applaud! She said that she made major changes to this published work, and it's true she did; there were new scenes in this book that weren't in the FFN story, and I think there may be other new directions that the plot is heading in that are different from what I remember of the FFN version. Unfortunately, though, she didn't make enough changes in regards to characterization and mythology which brings me to the case of P2P in the second category I previously listed above.

In the case of #2 type P2P stories, authors, if they're going to publish fanfic as original work need to break as many ties as possible that they have with the Twilight Saga in regards to their characters and vampire mythology.

I appreciated some changes that Angel did make to some characters….

…...but there were still a few too specific similarities to the world of Twilight in the published form of CoH:

What I'm trying to say is that if you are going to publish fanfic as a piece of original work, readers should not be drawing this many parallels to the fandom world you originally began writing in.

Angel has taken some baby steps towards building her own mythology. There's talk of a vampire Council which could be mistaken for the Volturi, but at the same time, they seem to be in favor of Grant's coven protecting this city which does make us wonder why this is the case (it's very un-Volturi like)? Likewise, there is one very small scene where Olivia and Grant discuss an "alternate" food source (which I'm guessing is human blood) leading us to wonder if Grant does ingest human blood every once and a while and for what purpose? There is also the question of transformations and how they work. In her earlier ARC copy, there was mention of venom, but this seems to be something that will be changing as it's no longer mentioned in the newly edited version of CoH which leads us to wonder if it's possible for vampires to feed on humans without killing them if they stop before completely draining the human in question? So, I'm very interested to see how Angel further develops her mythology and the laws that govern vampires in the universe that she has begun to create in this first novel of the series.

Ultimately, I feel like Angel needed to do a bit more more distancing from the characterization of Twilight and I need to see more of her take on vampire mythology before I can really give a sound judgement on the novel's level of originality; there are some signs that she is taking off in her own direction, but I'm going to need to see how far she takes this ownership in the sequel before I can really tell if this series can effectively stand on its own as a separate entity from Twilight.

I'm a longtime fan of Angel Lawson's work, so it's no surprise I enjoyed Creature of Habit. It's got a little of everything - humor, action, romance - I mean, what's not to love about an OCD creature of the night?

I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Amelia doesn’t know what’s going to happen when she accepts a job for the mysterious Grant Palmer. The rundown of the job is quite strange, but when she hears how much of a stickler for his routine Grant is, she shrugs it off, vowing to do her best. As the story amps up, their relationship turns personal and the stakes are high.

There were plenty of moments of romance, suspense, and just times when I forgot I was listening to a story because I was so involved. Angel’s writing style is very easy to follow along with. I have read/listened to a lot of vampire books, and I have to say, the angle that this author chose to pursue was very fresh. It isn’t often I can say a vampire book is original, so I am so glad to have come across this piece.

The narration was wonderfully done.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

I received this ARC for a honest review of Creature of Habit and have to say from page 1 until the end I couldn't put it down.
I am not usually one to read this type of story but loved the first version of it and now this one also. Grant is mysterious, quiet
and often times strange to those who don't know him. Amelia is young and out of school, getting her first job with the elusive Mr. Palmer.
Little does she know what she is in for. At first she barely sees him and what she does see she doesn't really care for but in time
there is something that draws him to her and really her to him also. I found myself rooting for Grant from the start to be with Amelia.
I guess there is something about the forbidden sometimes that makes you want it to happen. Either way I want to see them happy but as always
there are things threatening to keep them apart. I'm forever the optimist. A wonderful story with heart warming characters.

I was gifted an ARC of Creature of Habit for an honest review.

I thought it was a fabulous first book in a series. We received an introduction to a wide array of characters and learned each of their personality traits. There are some laugh out loud funny moments, along with some seriously emotional ones. It's the perfect build-up for the drama you know is coming, along with the sweet romance we so desire. Amelia's strong-will makes you cheer out loud and Grant's obtuseness gives you the giggles. I can't wait to read the follow-up books in this series.

As a side note, I did read this as a fan-fiction, and even then, it was so very original in plot. Yes, she used the Twilight characters, but the whole story was so NOT Twilight. And it's even further removed from it now. I trust Angel to bring us a riveting adult romance that is nothing like Twilight aside from that they both have vampires.

This was a good read! I loved the duel POV. Grant was a great character. He had the whole tortured soul thing going on which made it interesting to read. Amelia was sweet but feisty and I like that aspect in a heroine.

The story had many similarities to Twilight but I thought it was fantastic because of the duel POV!

What can i say?! Yes,I was gone on a bender all things twilight (go on -unfriend me,see if I care!) and only recently discovered the whole new world of fan fiction!!! I couldn't believe how many of very popular books originally were twilight fanfic!

I read all three books in CoH series and I liked them! If you don't care about twilight ,it is still good paranormal romance .

Reclusive philanthropist Grant Palmer is a puzzle that his new assistant, Amelia Chase is determined to solve. Unbeknownst to her, he’s a vigilante vampire, obsessed with (among other things) protecting the unsuspecting humans of Asheville from predators — be they vampire or not. As their working relationship develops, so grows the intense, mysterious attraction between Grant and Amelia. Can this mortal woman be the key to unlocking Grant Palmer’s heart? And is this enigmatic, handsome man truly the superhero of Amelia’s dreams, or is he really a monster, waiting to pounce?

Creature of Habit: Book One of Angel Lawson’s Creature of Habit Trilogy is an adaptation of her popular Creature of Habit Twilight fan fiction. And while there are a few pointed similarities that harken back to the Twilight aspect of her fan fiction story (they are vampires, after all), they don’t distract from the mesmerizing plot and subtle character development of her story. Lawson’s Grant Palmer is beset with an admirable responsibility to protect the innocent. Constantly on guard, he resists his feelings for Amelia, attempting to rationalize her presence in his life as a test from the divine:

“She was simply a test. One I could successfully pass — like other challenges over the course of my lifetime.” p.47

Amelia, determined to discover Grant’s secrets, sets out on a course of misguided actions that lead to nothing short of laugh out loud comedic relief. Eventually (and inevitably), Grant and Amelia draw closer to one another, and Amelia recognizes their fates are entwined:

“Separate, we were two people muddling through life. Together we were electric.” p.328

Lawson’s writing effortlessly takes the unsuspecting reader from humorous situations to horrific scenarios — it’s a well crafted story. And as the story progresses, the UST levels start to chart dangerously between the vampire and his lady love. However, this reader would be remiss in not pointing out that, although Grant Palmer becomes obsessed with and addicted to Amelia’s lemony scent, there are no actual lemons, per se, in Book One.

Book One does end with a minor cliffie, mitigated somewhat by an epilogue — conceivably it stands alone, but Creature of Habit is so compelling, reading Book Two is a must. And Book Three is, well, this reader can only hope it’s the icing on a big, luscious lemony cake.

I really don't know how this author got away with publishing this without infringing on Stephanie Meyer's copyrights. Only a few chapters in and I couldn't help but think that this was exactly like Twilight, with a few minor tweaks. Sure enough after a quick internet search I found this was a Twilight fan fiction that the author had published. For this reason I cannot give this book a rating higher than a three, because the majority of its concept was stolen from another author. That being said, if you liked Twilight, you'll like this.

Great storyline. Needs editing

Example:

'Drew leaned back on her palms, his legs crossed.'

This character's gender is unclear. Though not truly relevant to the story, it is a bit distracting.

Very similar to the original fanfic but still very readable. For my taste there were to many similarities to the Cullen family to make it original fiction though.

I really, really, REALLY wanted to love this book. I read the original fanfiction it was based on, which I absolutely loved, so I was very happy to get back into this world and see what the novel treatment had done with it.

The best part was that I still love Amelia. Love her voice, her inner thoughts, her ways of dealing with Mr. Grant. But then again, Amelia was already her own character in the fanfic, so that was easy to transition to.

The worst part was that Mr. Grant was left without backstory. It worked in fanfiction world because all the background was already there, we knew where he was coming from. We knew him, period. But Grant's past was left in a black void, so he just doesn't make sense. He's not likeable, he's not more than one dimensional. We're supposed to cheer for him because...well, because he's the vamp?

There were several contradictions in the story because the editor/author didn't finish combing the novel to take all Twilight references out. So, can he read minds or can't he? Then Jasper and Alice are still Jasper and Alice, and I just couldn't continue any further to see what the rest of the family had been turned into.

I wish we had spent a lot more time knowing Grant. Why he was so reclusive, why did he declare himself a savior. He's just there. Halfway through we're not even given a reason why Amelia's scent was so appealing to him--unless we go back to fanfic land, but this is not the fanfic, this is a novel.

Best of luck to the author, because I was truly bewitched once with this tale. But now it needs to really stand on its own.

Wow, really captiatingng book, which finishes on a cliff's edge!

This book "A Vampire's Soul", being #1 in the Creature of Habit trilogy, tells of Amelia Chase and Grant Palmer. They start out as employer and emloyee, but evolve into actual friends.

Their story shows how people have different types of tribes, villages and communities. Whether Grant Palmer (smart, accomplished, rich, sexy, yet socially awkward vampire) is a superhero like Batman or a redemption seeker like Angel; his tribe, his family are in the service of helping humans.

Some vampires have come to respect the Palmer's territory and the council; while others are rogue outcasts, seeking savage revenge, wreaking havoc, desiring domination!

Amelia Chase (educated, efficient, reliable, meticulous, determined/stubborn) is caught unawares in this raging war! Her natural lemony scent has put her on the predator's menu and her life destined as a pawn of his vicious vengeance!

Can't wait to read Book #2 "A Vampire's Curse" !
For 16+, a paranormal mystery romance!

Dragged On and On and On.....

The relationship between Ameila and Grant was just sooo slow. Way too slow. It caused the entire book to drag, especially without much action. Mainly, the book focused on day to day operations of his home office and their internal thoughts and feelings. Some of that is fine of course, necessary even, but it got to the point of being boring. Grant's OCD was also over the top.. I get that it was supposed to be, but it made HIM boring, too. It did keep my attention until about 3/4 of the way through, which is more than I can say for most of the books I've attempted to read lately; but I just got tired of waiting for something...anything...to happen. I haven't quite decided if I will read the rest or not, it just depends on the books in my TBR section and if they're disappointing or not.

This was my first read from Ms. Lawson, it grabbed my attention right away. It was well written and the characters were well developed amazingly. As I spent my day relaxing by the pool and reading this book and staying up way too late into the night to finish it in one day. I was very frustrated that it wasn't going to end in one book, I don't mind second books in a series but I feel when you invest so much time into a book you should be able to at least be able to wrap up the story line, we don't even know anything about the fate of these characters by the end of this book. This makes me soo sad! So as much as I like this book im only going to give it a 3 heart review since I could be satisfied with the end results.

This story took to long to get nowhere.

Reading this story was like watching paint dry. The main characters had absolutely no chemistry. The plot was okay. I almost stop reading around 50% but I wanted to give the story a fair chance. It didn't get any better for me. I will not continue reading this series.

Batman, Angel, and then there's Grant

I was drawn in by the blurb for the book and was not disappointed. I liked the pop culture references, art references, and the book as a whole. The interactions between Amelia and Grant were well written without the instalove that oftentimes happens. There are legit laugh out loud parts.

If you don't like alternating POV's this book is not for you. I however, didn't mind it. It allowed me as the reader to gain more insight into the two MC thoughts and feelings without them knowing about the other. This book was rather slow, as we followed the mystery and it ended almost as soon as the action started. That being said I am looking towards book 2

I was in the mood for a vamp romance and this series has been sitting in my tbr for awhile. It’s a slow burn workplace romance. Very slow burn. This definitely had some Twilight feels to it. I loved the family aspect and there were bits of humor woven in. This book was clean romance. There was some vampiric darkness and violence. It is only part one in the saga and ends on a cliffhanger.

Another Twilight fan fiction. What’s new? Nothing thats what. 🙄 Characters might be slightly older but not any better. This also made it painfully clear that I might have liked Twilight at one point in my life but if I had to read it again I wouldn’t enjoy it.
