Caught in the Middle

Rate this book
Three friends, an afternoon of debauchery -- where will they go from here?

Her entire life, Erin has been focused on her career in medicine -- killing her social life and leaving her sexually frustrated. When she vents to her friends Jack and Simon, the guys are only too happy to help her scratch that itch. But why stop at a one-time occasion when there are so many possibilities?

With a decade worth of experience under his belt, Simon is more than capable as a Dom to help Erin discover her masochistic, submissive tendencies and embrace a new side of herself that she's now eager to explore. And hanging out with Jack where everything is easy and uncomplicated is a dream come true. Within the changing dynamics of their friendship, even Simon and Jack are building new bridges, letting Jack explore his bisexual fantasies.

Yet when emotions start factoring into the equation, things suddenly become complicated, and soon Erin sees herself confronted with a terrible dilemma: she has to choose between the man who can make her darkest wishes come true, and the friend who knows her better than she even knows herself -- unless she wants to lose them both. Or is there another alternative?

Dive into this vivid erotic romance full of friendship, lust, love, bondage, dominance, and submission. Intended for mature audiences.

Kira Barker has always enjoyed telling stories. It has kept her sane through high school and college, and has become a true passion since. A geek gamer girl herself, she feels at home reading sci-fi and fantasy as much as writing romance. She likes her plots gritty, her smut realistic, and doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty when it comes to research. When she’s not writing, she loves annoying her cats or cruising country roads on her motorcycle.

I am tired from reading all the sex in this book!

Erin who is a surgeon who is sexually starved apparently fingering herself whilst on duty at work (wtf) gets a drunken offer from her best friend and his room mate Simon for a threesome.

Erin the skank she is agrees and try bang her seven shades to Sunday.

Then she somehow becomes Simons submissive and BDSM is added into this clusterfuck.

Beatings and canning and flogging and the whole ten yards....

Add in another threesome only the guys are also fcuking each other while fucking Erin.

Add in a little worse beatings when Jack is a little freaked out that Erin is ignoring him.

So he gets it on with Simon and plays them back at each other.

In concision. Erin is a dirty whore- this book is only written in sex and sex and more sex.

Simon fucking Jack simultaneously while Jack fucks Erin in the ass simultaneously.

Like I don't know how I made it to the end.
Probably curiosity got the better of me. I'm wondering how Erin does not have an infection by now the amount of dicks/fingers/plugs/vibrators went up her ass and her vagina.

End and repeat!

This was a horrible ménage book! I was bored with her inner dialogue. The two guys are her best of friends, never hooked up with and they proposition her to have a threesome because she's not getting any.
Simon is into BDSM, which wasn't a issue. But he was waaaaaay overboard. He would hit her so many times, 20 flogs, canning, spanked on each leg, thigh, ass cheek. I felt like she was being physically beaten and there wasn't any sexual aspect to it. I was wondering how she would be able to walk, sit or work after having her ass fucked and beat. The scenes weren't sexy, hot or even interesting. I had to DNF.

This great story about best friends to lovers has many twists and turns. The dynamics between the three friends (2 guys and a girl) is quite interesting and complicated. Erin and Jack have been best friends since they were little kids. They have a bond so strong that they're blinded by their familial love. Add in Jack's roommate, Simon, and you have a tough situation.

I was tense while reading the whole story, waiting for the shoe to drop or their friendship to change. The whole story was plotted and played out so well, that once I started to relax, the shoe dropped. It was emotional but I love the way it was handled.

Barker writes great characters and a woman with a strong, blunt personality (She very much reminded me of myself in that manner), while the others are also strong and snarky. I enjoyed the humor and the comebacks so much. Even Jack was silly, but Simon was quiet and commanding. And sexy.

But Erin like her two best friends were emotionally stunted. Insecurities, doubts, silence, and assumptions lead to confusion between all of them.

And the sexy times ... yeah, the sexy times are hot. They are not redundant or too much nor do they take over the story. They're just perfect and fit so well.

There is another book coming in this series, but don't worry, this one ended all tied up for now. Can't wait to see what the next has in store for these three. If you like erotica, menage, complicated relationships, BDSM, best friend stories, and romance this story is for you.

What do you get when you have 3 best friends, a little kink and few emotions? You have the new erotic story by Kira Barker, Caught in the Middle. When you are Caught in the Middle, it can be a wonderful predicament but it can also be a pain in the ass. Kira takes you on a journey through Erin's eyes. What she is going through with Jack and Simon, her two best friends, while fighting emotions she isn't familiar or comfortable with. Erin is somewhat hesitant to try the unknown, even though that unknown is VERY intriguing to her! What she stumbles upon will leave her breathless, wanting more and yet questioning her very being and whom she is becoming. Will Erin, Jack and Simon learn to get along in a harmonious manner or will their evil, vindictive ways be too much and wedge them apart? This is Book 1 but Kira does very well of closing it, so that you won't feel as if your hanging from that cliff. Book 2 promises to be just as titillating and rewarding.

I was captivated from beginning to end. She gives you just what the Doctor ordered, or will be at least prescribing!! I loved how I could picture exactly what Kira was trying to portray in her writing. Page by page and scene by scene, I couldn't stop wondering where these three were heading in the end. Just when you think you know how something will end up, the ball gets dropped and everything is placed in jeopardy. Kira managed to keep the angst to a minimum, loves scenes hot, hot, hot and such a balanced, harmonized flow, it was hard to stop and left me wanting more of these three in the future. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did!!

This was one of the worst menage books. Erin had wayyyy tooooo much inner dialogue it was page after page after page, I can't tell you how many pages I skipped. To top it off I didn't like like any of the characters at all. Not surprising I didn't finish reading this book.

This is my very first ARC - I got the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I will not write a plot summary, as you can find that on the book description. It's a menage book, with threesomes, kinky sex and complicated relationships. It's a friends-to-lovers story. It contains sex scenes between two men and a woman. It's good.

The main characters have their good sides and their bad. I didn't find them instantly likeable, and sometimes they rubbed me the wrong way. They curse and have bad attitudes. But that's OK, who wants to read books where everyone is super nice and pleasant all the time? I personally found the kink hot (not always my kind of kink) and the threesomes even hotter.

Of course there's a big conflict, not everything can be roses and unicorns even in this story. I will admit I shed a few tears. It is resolved for the most part before the book ends in a happily-for-now, perhaps a little too fast. But who is to say how life long friends solve their conflicts, even when feelings are really hurt? And perhaps some will spill over into the sequel.

This book started out a little slow for me. Erin has been focused on her career in medicine — killing her social life and leaving her sexually frustrated. When she vents to her friends Jack and Simon, the guys are only too happy to help her scratch that itch. Simon is a Dom with sadistic tendencies and Erin is a bit of a masochistic. Jack and Erin have been friends for years having grew up next door to each other. I didn't like Jack because he let his jealousy come between Simon and Erin and he tried to break them up to gain more attention. The problem between this threesome is that they didn't talk to each other. This book was very well written this was my first time reading this author. The sex scenes were very hot and Simon was very upfront about being Bi the author didn't go into Jack's side of it Simon was the first man that he was with. The more I read the better this story got and I am looking for to reading the next book in this series. If you like reading menage with a little drama than I recommend that you read this book.

If you like BDSM, you might like this.
If you are younger than 30 their lifestyle and dialogue might not annoy you.
If love triangles don't bother you than this might be a great read for you.

I didn't care for the level of BDSM violence. I couldn't connect with the shitty roommate/ youthful slang lingo and give each other shit friendships. Love triangles bug me to no end. so there you go. And to top it off - I just didn't like Erin. She was such a tool (said in Erin speak) and super immature. Its hard to believe she is a surgeon. Simon was appealing in the beginning but the BDSM part of this book went south for me fast and his manipulative behavior was disgusting. I thought Jack was pretty sexy but he too, seemed like an immature flake. The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because it has some pretty steamy scenes that curled my toes. but they weren't worth trudging through all of the dysfunction.

I can't say much more without ruining spoilers and I don't know that the book deserves much more thought.

I really liked the synopsis and wanted to like the book. I got to 13% and it was a DNF for me, as I did not like Simon's Dom words and actions at that point and could not read it any more.

I received an ARC for Caught in the Middle by Kira Barker, available for general purchase on the 12th August.

I finished reading it a few days ago and I’ve put off writing the review because I really wasn’t sure how I felt about it. It’s still unclear after the time out, so I thought I’d just write the review without giving it a star rating and let you all make up your own minds.

The story follows Erin, Simon and Jack. Erin is training to be a trauma surgeon so she works long hours and is so focused on her career that she’s a little bit blind to everything else. Simon is a brilliant yet arrogant writer. His abrasive nature puts a lot of people off unless you know how to take him. Jack is a charming playboy, handsome and easygoing.

Although the standard of writing was mostly pretty good, there were a LOT of typos where words were misused – new instead of next, expressively instead of expressly and (my favourite) corporeal punishment instead of corporal punishment, to name but a few. In fairness to the author, it was an ARC I received and these errors may have been corrected by the time it gets to print. [After writing this review I heard back from the author and she stated that the final proof reading hadn't been done before the ARCs were sent out, so all of these errors should have been corrected in the final print version.]

There were also a lot of heavily involved, convoluted sections of dialogue where I sometimes managed to lose track of who was speaking.

I think my main issue with the book was that I didn’t like or empathise with any of the characters. I don’t always think that’s a bad thing. I’ve read other books where I wasn’t enamoured of the main character and still enjoyed it overall and, to give the author credit, as self-obsessed and narcissistic as her trio are, at least they’re consistent with it. I think, for me, it was just because all the characters were like that. Even Kara, who is a secondary character, comes in as abrasive, rude and prying. There was no-one likeable to cheer for in the whole cast. I feel like I should have identified with Simon more as he’s the closest to me in terms of life experience, but Jack was probably my favourite and I was warming to him, right up until he turned out to be a manipulative heartbreaker. Others may not have an issue with the characters, or at least identify with them more than I did, in which case you should dive right on in and cheer your champion to victory.

I think that because I cared for little for the characters or what happened to them, the story had little to no emotional impact on me at all and, because of that, it felt very static. It’s a character based story so there’s no action or adventure of any sort – it’s three people sitting around talking in between bouts of sex and the odd trip to work. If I were more emotionally invested, I’d probably have been a lot more gripped by the story and I leave that up to you to decide how you interpret it. As I said before, you may well empathise with the characters a lot more than I did.

The plot is incredibly simple. It’s two guys and a girl learning how to co-exist in a menage a trois arrangement and making a lot of mistakes along the way. To confuse issues, Simon is a Dom and Jack is bi-curious, although he wavers over admitting that in the beginning. Caught in the middle, Erin is torn as to what she wants and becomes something of a passive voice in the whole relationship, allowing Simon to overwhelm her with the intensity of what they have.

The dialogue between the characters is at times both deep and revealing of the psychology of poly relationships. I think this is where the book really shines – the author clearly has a good grasp of the issues that people involved in these relationships struggle with. It’s not an easy balance to find and it’s nice to read characters that are articulate and intelligent in the way they communicate. It was one of the nicer things about the characters – they were all slightly older than your typical romantic/erotica protagonists. They’re all in their thirties.

Another thing that was done really well was the sex scenes. Ladies (and gentlemen) get your fans out and prepare to get steamy! They were hot. Very hot. They were well written and any dirty talk was well done, without any of the laughable porn-speak you see so often in erotica. It leans quite heavily towards the anal end of the spectrum so if that bothers you, this is probably not your scene. That too was well written though – heavy emphasis on the lube, preparation and changing of condoms – gold star for the author! There’s also some M/M action.

It was good that she got the D/s aspect of it so spot on too – the way they set up rules and protocol is pretty standard, but not everyone can articulate the mentality of it as well as this author does. I liked that Simon wasn’t perfect too. He gives a good impression of being in control but there are insecurities there, lurking just beneath the surface, and that was nice to see. Doms are people too, with the same hang ups as everyone else. It was really good to see someone break out of that mould or the ‘perfect Dom’. The author has also either researched or got some hands on experience with rope restraint. Those sections were well described and realistic, which was great.

All in all, I’m really not sure what to make of this one. There were aspects I thought were brilliant and others that left me cold, probably in equal measure. I suggest you download it and see for yourselves!

I simply loved, loved the story big time! I'm a sap for stories in the genre from best friends to lovers and Kira Barker has done justice to it, big time! All her characters are both lovable and frustrating, intelligent but also dumm as hell because they don't seem to understand what they have just in front of them. There's the workaholic Erin whose home is more the hospital than the bedroom and whose mind and body need some unwinding in the form of kinky sex. Then there's the intellectual writer Simon who has been into BDSM for quite a while now and who is more than happy to help Erin in her sexual frustration. Then there's the witty, lovable, best friend Jack who teases both of them with his perfect body and tattoos and who has always been Erin's rock. These favourite three of mine have a couple of hot, hot, hot afternoons. Then Erin starts a sub relationship to Simon until everything goes to hell. Relationships are complicated, that's a fact, and when true feelings and non-communicative characters are involved, you get a soup that is about to boil over, until it does.
Yes, this is a love story with a capital L. Is it a common one? Not so sure. Is it a beautiful one? Hell yes! You will get teary-eyed or you will cry, but those tears are just the beginning in the story -a start for something good, sexy and beautiful.
Kira Barker knows her sex scenes and the world of BDSM. She also knows that love and sex are raw, so why should you sugar-coat speaking about them? She writes very good dialogue and situational comedy that give you some good laughs. She writes strong female characters and has her way with words. Sentences such as "I'm not just in love with you." or "Yet." are so meaningful in this story that why don't you buy it to yourself to find out what they mean in it! In the meantime I try to internalize the meaning of the word patience because that's what I don't have. I want to read more about the life of my favourite three and I want the sequel to COME NOW, like Simon said! ;)

Just reading Caught In The Middle‘s synopsis alone immediately grabbed my attention. I knew right there and then that I needed to read this book. I mean, come on… who could resist the drama that could potentially happen between three long time friends who decides to risk an impeccable friendship for a quick roll in the hay? Not me!

What captivated me even from the very beginning was the dynamics between Erin, Jack and Simon together and eventually as paired off couples. Oh yeah! There wasn’t a single moment where I didn’t feel somewhat anxious throughout the story.

“…looking into his eyes, seeing unspoken emotions roiling in them, I saw that I wasn’t the only one acutely aware of how things were shifting between us…”

As expected, the sexy scenes were all around fascinating but what made this one even that more compelling was when emotions started becoming part of the equation. The instant that these feelings were finally disclosed was when the tension became quite overwhelming. That is – overwhelming in a good way! Let me tell you, there was a never single boring moment in this book.

I found it also interesting how a friendship between three people transitioned from something platonic to something (very) sexual and eventually into something romantic. All of that sounds complicated right? Yet Kira Barker did a fascinating job chronicling such a transformation.

Caught In The Middle for me was a fantastic debut. I definitely am looking forward to seeing how this dynamic threesome’s relationship further develop in the upcoming books.

Technically a 3.5 but I'm rounding up to a 4.

I go into writing this review with very mixed feelings. Let me start by saying, it was HOT - like steaming hot. The sex scenes (which are the majority of the book) are very well written and definitely leave the reader squirming in their seats. If you're into BDSM, descriptive sex, and kinky MFM threesomes, this book is for you. The author seems to have done in depth research, making the scenes of BDSM very believable and give the reader a full mental image of that world.

Now for my dilemma. Each character in this book carried a very strong personality with snark, sarcasm, arrogance, and a bit of humor. In short, they all felt very one dimensional to me. It was hard to differentiate between the characters' personalities because they were practically the same. And the circumstances that set Erin up for her sexual rendezvous with her best friend, Jack and his roommate, Simon, seemed very anticlimactic to me.

Again, let me stress this book isn't bad. It was creative and well written; it just lacked the emotional depth that we all know I LOVE. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who wants hot, sticky, kinky, steamy sex, because, baby, let me tell you, this book has it.

Friends to lovers is one of my favorite romance tropes along with second chance stories. This book, my first by Kira Barker, gave me both and I really enjoyed it.

Erin and Jack have been friends since childhood; Simon came into the picture later during college. Jack has always been there for Erin when life tried to drag her down. Her life as a surgical resident is very demanding and she doesn't have much time for herself much less a relationship so she's constantly feeling unsatisfied sexually.

One night, after a party, Simon lets her know that he and Jack want a three-way with her and also that he is bi and a Dom. Things go pretty well the first time the three of them get together. Next Erin agrees to "playing" with Simon as a submissive - something she's never done before.

This book has a lot of stuff going on, not only the triad's relationship but also that of Jack and Simon. Once I got into it I couldn't put it down until my ereader fell out of my hands when I nodded of in the wee hours of the morning. There is not really a cliffhanger ending; I consider it a HFN. There is a book 2 which I expect to go even deeper into the triad's relationship. I've just started reading it and will post a review when I've finished.

If you're looking for well described smut - take some precaution - make sure you have fresh batteries first! As this book won't disappoint. This happens to be my favorite variety....two men and some BDSM to boot!

What Kira does better than any other author I've read is effectively put into words the euphoria one feels during a scene (and sometimes for a while after). She also aptly describes sub drop without the label. So if you're curious as to why someone would let another person beat them - read this and see If you think BDSM is merely for the lesser educated or meek female - her characters defy the stereotype which I love her for.

Sure there are some grammar issues but the story and descriptions will make up for such minor offenses. I've paid more to read much worse.

If you're still skeptical....read until you get to the lake scene....if that doesn't keep you nothing will! ;-)

Kira Barker’s debut novel is brilliant. It had me longing for my own session. Kira portrays the BDSM with class and dignity that it deserves. She can write one hell of erotic scene and there was no shortage of those. While polyamory and menage are not my things, I do love reading about them. I have several poly friends in the lifestyle and Kira does a great job in telling this side of the story. I love that Erin is a strong female character some might call her bratty but I like snarky and she is learning. Simon, a Dominant in every sense of the word. I love that she showed that Simon can be a loving, caring and nurturing Dom but he can also be the sadistic bastard. The leaves us with Jack, who does not want a friend like Jack.

Can not wait for the next installment of We Kinky Three. Well done, Kira but I knew you could do it. Congratulations on a great story!

Oh my where to begin? Kira introduces to Erin, Jack and Simon in a very unconventional way, but it does hook you from the start and you just have to read on to get more info on these three. Erin needs something new in her life to balance out her self from work and normal day to day activities. Enter bff Jack and his room mate Simon, what starts out as a a fun little three some turns into something more. This does how ever answer the question of when the line a friendship to friends with benefits get crossed is there a way to move forward without causing and heartbreak on all fronts. And Kira answer's it wonderfully in this story. Cant wait to read the next installment, awesome job Kira :)

With so many nuances and lifestyle adjustments, bumps in the road are expected, but I was floored with how smooth, how seamlessly the story shifted between scenes and moved forward. Well-written and well-edited, always a plus in my book, Caught in the Middle had me laughing, getting angry, longing for my own session, and even crying.

My big take away from this book was that bondage can be a lot of work. I’m kind of doubting that I would have the patience for extended rope play especially early in the relationship. Also, I’m not sure how hard I could slap a p*. So the BDSM stuff was a little intense for me. That being said, this book is still hot. It made me want a lake house.

The focus is more on the characters and the relationship than plot driven, which is generally a plus for me, but YMMV.

The story is okay. It isn't different from other MMF series that I have read before. So far it is the typical three friends who venture into a night of sex and it's all fun and games...until it's not anymore. I'm looking for something to set this story apart from the others, but I haven't found it yet. Well, at least not in book 1.
