Demons.

They’re everywhere, hiding in plain sight. Chances are, you’ve interacted with one or two of them in your lifetime without even realizing it...

Demon hunter Evelyn Brighton saves unsuspecting humans from the malevolent creatures masquerading around them every day. Working under the Lebriga Corporation’s direction, she never fails to bring her A-game with her keen skill, fiercely independent spirit, and the best weapon in her arsenal: the Divinity blade.

Evelyn’s world is turned on its ear, however, when she is ordered to train cocky new recruit Daniel Summers. They both feel an instinctive pull drawing them to one another, the ancient spells tattooed into their skin illuminating whenever the two hunters come into contact. But with evil looming over the city of Los Angeles, Evelyn and Daniel’s mutual competitiveness and sense of duty to Lebriga and all humankind forces them to hold back their desires. Will their restraint be enough to keep them focused and save southern California, or will the dark forces prevail?

Set in modern-day Los Angeles, Divinity is an action-filled, fast-paced marriage of urban fantasy and paranormal romance. Edgy, witty, and sexy, it will bind you in its spell.

Enjoyable first book in a paranormal series, will most likely continue sooner rather than later. Not completely sold on it but interesting enough

Divinity is equally divided between Evie and Daniel’s points of view and each of them brings something different to the story. Evie is 135 years old, she is – first and foremost – a demon hunter, and she’s very inflexible and unwilling to change. Daniel is younger, newly trained and still fairly optimistic. His devilish grin is a powerful weapon, especially when aimed at Evie and her hardened heart.

Unlike Evie, Daniel doesn’t take himself too seriously. He is strong and reliable in a fight, but away from battle, he is a pretty lighthearted guy. He is a perfect match for the all-too-serious woman, but at the same time, he benefits from the much needed calming effect she has on him. The two aren’t just good for each other, they are destined to be together, but Evie is too set in her ways and afraid of letting go.

Leever’s worldbuilding is pretty straightforward and simple: a group of hunters supervised by the archangel Gabriel lives in the same house and hunts demons. They are apparently immortal (or just long-lived, it’s never properly addressed) and they use various incantations when they fight. Each of them is covered with magical tattoos that channel their magic in a way that is also not properly explained.

I loved that it wasn’t all about Daniel and Evie, though. All their friends, hunters and handlers both, were given due attention and I felt that I really got to know them exceptionally well for such a short book. They make this series much stronger and their presence promises strong future installments.

Divinity can be read in no more than a couple of hours and it will leave you with a smile on your face, which is the very definition of a good summer read.

I received this book from Patty from the OmniAngels Twitter Party.

I have come to love these parties, oh dear...

First off, I'd like to point that the girls from Omnific have a talent for mindfuck, why?, they have an incredible imagination!!

I loved this book, I think it is different and it kept me entertained, and as I've specified before, when it comes to paranormal books, this is a hard task to accomplish because I do too have a very active imagination!

I loved Evie, she is such a badass!! You know, girl power and all that party.

If you are looking for a different story, well written and captivating, you should deff read this book! I read it in one sit.

Thank you Patty for giving me the chance to read this amazing book and thanks Debra Anastasiawho also made it possible!!

“Be swift, be strong”

Patricia Leever does it again in her second novel, Divinity, creating yet another strong heroine in 135-year-old demon hunter Evelyn Brighton.

Who knew Los Angeles has so many demons running around? I sure didn't. In this story, they are everywhere, living amongst the humans. Evelyn (who also goes by Evie, Ev, and E) works for the Lebriga Corporation. A fully-loaded, state-of-the-art mansion off of Mulholland serves as the Los Angeles branch of Lebriga. This is where Evelyn, the other hunters, their handlers, and their boss live. I must say that I just loved the dynamic and banter between all the characters. They are a tight-knit group who take fighting demons seriously.

Evelyn is one bad-ass, fearless hunter, and I wouldn't want to get in her way! When new recruit, Daniel Summers, moves into the house to train with Ev, he draws out feelings from her she's never had to deal with before. This is where I * squee * for Daniel, because he is so patient and understanding with Ev as she sorts out her feelings. With two very focused individuals, how long can they dance around their attraction for one another?

Now, you can't fight nasty, smelly demons, goblins, and trolls without some ultra-cool weapons! Ev's weapon of choice is the Divinity blade. Where can I get me one of those? There are also the tattoos, which play a significant role in the demon-fighting. All the hunters have tattoos decorated all over their bodies. It's pretty cool how they are used, if you ask me!

Divinity was such a fun and fast-paced read for me. I wanted the story to keep going and going. An urban fantasy, paranormal romance filled with action, gory details, and just the right amount of snark. Overall entertaining and enjoyable!

Many thanks to Omnific for sending me an ARC for review. Divinity releases September 25, 2012.

This book was given to me to read by Omnific Publishing. And let me say, thank you, thank you, thank you. This book wasn't even on my radar and I'm sure glad it popped up!

I really enjoyed this book. Evelyn is a headstrong, confident, plays-by-her-own-rules, bad-ass right up there with the likes of Miss Cat Crawford herself! I loved watching her walls crumble little by little.

The story telling was amazing, the chemistry between all the characters was fantastic and there were quite a few people living in the house but they were pretty easy to keep straight.

Every hunter is paired with a handler/scout and those relationships are fun to read. They are closer than siblings, always the same sex and never have a problem giving their partner in crime a what-for if they think they need it.

There was plenty of action both in the training ring and out in the field, there was no shortage of grotesque baddies to take down with a few good laughs along the way. The way tattoos were used in this story was really great as well. I love how the tattoos are how they channel the magic and cast spells and charms while fighting. What a better way to have what you need, literally on your fingertips, or forearm, or shoulder...

The tension built up between Evelyn and Daniel right from the start and I always love the idea of two people destined to be together fighting side by side for what they believe!

I would have liked the love scenes to be a little longer but what was there was not disappointing.

I would recommend this book to others and in fact already have.

Oh and Ms. Patricia Leever, please, write another one!

Do you like Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Meet Evie the Demon Hunter. This is a really cool "world", which is our world now but there's demons and we don't know it. But the Lebriga Corporation does, and that's why, for centuries, they've found and trained demon hunters and their handlers. The handlers are the ones who concoct potions, weapons, and all sorts of fun goodies for the hunters to go out and get the baddies.

One of my favorite parts of this world is the tattoos. Tats are not just tats; they are imbued with magic and help the hunter in his or her tasks. A bad tattoo means a messed up spell. Enter Daniel, a hot head new recruit with a lot of potential. Evie has to fix his tattoos, and correct his attitude. She's 135, he's about 20. It'll never work out, right? ;)

I had so much fun reading this book. And really, if you've ever been to LA, it's not so unlikely that skeezy demons live there. :D

Four Stars: A fast, electric thrill ride!

Evie engages the cloaking spell and enters into the predator's lair.  She is a seasoned demon hunter bent on taking down a troll who is killing young teenage girls.  A quick bloody battle ensues, but Evie with her skill, magical tattoos and incantations along with her superior Divinity sword are victorious.  Evie is part of an elite demon hunting team.  Her calling is to flush out all the evil creatures in the world that only she and the other hunters and handlers can see.  It is a deadly job, but it does have a few perks such as magic tattoos, long life, wicked weapons and lots of action.  Evie is content with her lot in life.  She is one of the best demon hunters, she has close friends and a fulfilling career.  She has never felt the need to open herself to a romance, that is until Daniel a rookie arrives at the compound.  Evie endeavors to keep him arm's length even though she is forced to train him.  She finds it more difficult everyday to ignore the magnetic attraction.  Yet, she does not have time for a romance!  Something evil is on the wind.  The demons seem to be getting stronger and soon Evie and the others are in for the fight of their lives.  Can Evie survive the demons and untangle her feelings for Daniel?

What I Liked:

This book opens with a terrific action packed scene that sets the stage for a wild ride.  I liked the Evelyn is a no nonsense wicked demon huntress!  This girl is bad ass with her colorful, charmed ink and her swift and fierce sword.  Demons should be running for the hills when she is around.  If you are a fan of books with kick butt heroines, Evie will fit the bill.
This book features an antagonistic romance.  Evie on the surface dislikes Daniel, but deep inside she is denying her lustful feelings.  What ensues is a  sizzling dance between them filled with tension, just waiting to ignite.  You spend the entire read anticipating their collision and the fire to erupt.  If you enjoy romances where the characters are at odds, this one is for you!  This book smolders!
I loved the transformation that Evie undergoes.  She is uptight, closed off emotionally and unwilling to permit herself to love for she is afraid of loss.  Admitting she has feelings for Daniel is extremely difficult for her.  She doesn't want to be vulnerable.  It was entertaining to continually watch her grapple with her emotions and tamp down those lusty thoughts.  By the end, she has undergone a metamorphosis and I think she will be even stronger down the road.
Daniel is awesome.  He is ruggedly handsome, calm and ever so patient.  He is immediately drawn to the stone cold Evelyn, and he puts up with a whole heck of lot from her.  From ass kickings, to frozen looks and outward hostility.  Yet, he keeps it all in check and remains ever patient with her.  Seriously, this guy has some heart! I also loved how he starts out as a inexperienced rookie, and according to Evelyn's appraisal, he needs a lot of work, but he is a quick learner and smart so by the end he is a force to be reckoned with!
Alex, the head boss of Evelyn's branch ended up being such a surprise.  At first, he comes across as a stringent, suit wearing, no nonsense leader, but let me just say this guy has a few wicked tricks up his sleeve!
I liked that this book was a fast, fun read with a fiery romance and lots of action.  It moves quickly and it keeps the reader engaged.  Best of all, no love triangles or cliffhangers!  I am totally on board with a new series introduction that keeps me entertained and refrains from the jagged ending!
I love the cover of this one!  It just screams read me!
And The Not So Much:

I was fascinated by the colorful, magical tattoos that all the demon hunters and handlers wore.  I just wish there was a touch more detail on them, such as more descriptions, how the warrior got their tattoos: were they picked for them or did they select them?  I would love just a bit more of this type of in depth detail.
I wanted a bit more information on the demon hunters and how they were organized.  There were several branches throughout the world all led by the head honcho Gabriel.  I was wondering how many there were and if they all worked together or functioned separately.  I would love to know a bit more about Gabriel as well.
I never felt like I had a full grasp on what makes a demon hunter or a handler.  These individuals are born seeing demons, and they have longevity, but I wanted to know more about their long lives and all the unique abilities they have, especially among the handlers, their roles aren't as clearly defined.
Divinity is a terrific, fast fun book that delivers everything you crave in a UF read.  It has a kick butt, feisty heroine, loyal friends, hot guys, lots of action and plenty of wicked demons who need their butts thrust back into the pits of Hell.  If you like your books full of action and enjoy romances with seething tension you should definitely give this a whirl! I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to see where the series goes from here!

Favorite Quotations:

"A one-night mistake a few years ago that never seems to stop coming back to bite me on the ass."

"I looked down the hall and saw all six feet, three inches of dark haired, green-eyed hunk of yum wrapped in a tight gray T-shirt, heading my way."

"As much as I hated to admit it, I wouldn't have complained one bit if Daniel had decided never to wear a shirt again."

"But, really, what was not to like? She was beautiful.  Okay, so there was that one little matter of her being a soul-sucking she-shark who hated everything about me, but who didn't like a challenge?"

“The two of us were like oil and water, and we were going to either kill each other or screw each other stupid.  If I had anything to say about it, it would be the latter.”

“What are you so afraid of””

“Clowns, puppets, that plastic-headed Burger King guy....”

“Giving up just wasn’t in my nature.  I hadn’t let the demons masquerading as doctors, nurses, and orderlies at Agnews break me a hundred years ago, and back then I hadn’t even had dick to live for.”

Evie is a demon hunter hell bent on ridding Los Angeles of the evil that roams the streets. She was born with a gift to see demons who parade as humans along with her team mates at the Lebriga Corporation. Evie is content going on missions and killing demons. That is until Daniel and his handler Chris are sent to join the Los Angeles team. Daniel is a new recruit in dire need of training and the responsibility falls to Evie. She is used to flying solo now she must put her life in the hands of this newbie. Evie feels a connection to Daniel but she fights it at every turn.

Another great cover! The tattoos aren't just for decoration, they have a purpose. The story has a great balance between the romance and the action. I love the back and forth between the characters. The characters are written very well. Each have their own unique personality. I can't wait to see what happens next.

I received this book from Omnific Publishing in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is a fresh, cleanly written and edgy little paranormal novel about an LA bad ass protagonist who spends her time battling demons. It's also a love story--and one born of a sort of trainer/trainee dynamic, which is my favorite! I won't give away the story, but I WILL say that I highly recommend Divinity for its easy and sharp writing and a paranormal world that's far more accessible than most. Loved this book.

Those wanting a fast-paced exhilarating read will find that and more in this compelling paranormal story with immensely likable characters and room for even more entertaining stories in the future. Throughout the centuries the angel Gabriel has created his own elite army of demon hunters to battle against a hodgepodge of nightmare-inducing creatures with plans to wipe out humanity. These hunters are imbued with quick-healing abilities, tattoos that enhance their incantations, and long-life which makes for a colorful group of individuals that don't interact with the regular population. They've set themselves apart into a lonely existence that has them relying on each other for comfort and understanding amidst this non-stop battle that can bring death in the blink of an eye,

As one of the oldest hunters, Evelyn is extremely powerful with a deep confidence in her abilities. She's an expert at many things except when it comes to emotions and love which makes her interactions with newbie hunter Daniel complicated. She's been around for so long that she's forgotten her true self and therefore doesn't trust the intense emotions Daniel brings out in her. She's seen other hunters collapse after losing their loves and fears that happening to her. Fate has other plans, as does the prophetic mark on her neck, and it's soon apparent that her and Daniel work better together than apart. With an extremely deadly enemy on the loose they'll need all the power they can get when all the hunters come together in a pulse-pounding conclusion that kept me on the edge of my seat. From start to finish I found myself delighted by Evelyn's words and deeds. She was snarky yet showed a softer side that caught even her by surprise. She fought her emotions every step of the way yet still showed a girly-side of delight when gazing longingly at Daniel. She was a wonderful heroine that every woman can look up to.

Daniel is new to the team and desperate to prove himself. He's at first intimidated by Evelyn who shows him repeatedly he has a lot to learn, but he slowly becomes more drawn to her and sets out to woo the hard-hearted hunter. He slowly demonstrates that he's more powerful than he looks in some pulse-pounding fight scenes early on that show him to be protective of Evelyn and willing to put his life on the line to keep her safe. Their relationship evolves slowly from battling schoolchildren who provoke each other constantly to the slow burn of sexual tension that has him showing his charming and sexy side. Throughout the story I found Daniel to be an endearingly lovable character that is just what Evelyn needed to bring her out of her self-imposed shell of isolation and loneliness to a happy and smiling, yet still badass, warrior.

This was a thrilling story with a clever premise that leaves lots of room for more stories in the future. These hunters and their handlers are a colorful cast of characters who are both strong in spirit and heart and their family-like interactions were funny and heartwarming and had me wishing for them to stay safe during each of the bloody and dangerous battles they undertook. Ms. Leever has created a compelling storyline with likable characters and a vividly depicted paranormal world that has me wanting to come back for more and hoping that the author revisits this dangerously entertaining world soon.

Psychocat Reads Review of DIVINITY by Patricia Leever

(I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

There seems to be a growing trend around Psychocat Reads Reviews of me not getting to read books on my TBR list until a second book in a series comes out. Then I get to read them together and do back to back reviews. In the case of DIVINITY that is exactly what happened.

What drew me toward DIVINITY in the first place? Bad ass cover design? Check. Bad ass female character? Check. Evil demons trying to take over LA? Check. Wait. Is this book based on a true story?

Just kidding. Maybe.

All joking aside, let's see how DIVINITY held up against the claws.

The Characters: As promised in the summary, Evelyn is definitely not your damsel in distress kind of girl. She's all bad ass with a touch of emotional damage. Daniel on the other hand, is a bit more unsure of himself, though he seems to be more than capable of handling any situation from what I can see.

The only complaint I have is that because of the relatively short length of the book, it seemed like we were missing some depth to the characters. I loved what I got on each of them, but would have loved a bit more.

The Relationships: You can tell pretty quickly that despite their bickering, Evelyn and Daniel feel some serious draw to each other. DIVINITY doesn't go all insta-love on us, but there are certainly forces bigger than the characters at work here, and that does hype up the intensity of the romance angle of the story.

Too Perfect or Perfectly Flawed: Despite the hyped up intensity, the romance isn't exactly simple and straight forward. Evelyn struggles with her inner demons and her hard edge, and they keep things from coming off as too simple.

World Building: The book is set in Los Angeles, so you'll recognize certain street names and such; however, the important parts revolve around the hunters and Lebriga Corporation. Overall, the concept seems pretty straight forward. There are a few twists that keep it interesting, but from a world perspective, it's easy to grasp and fits with the story.

The Book as Part of a Series: DIVINITY can standalone as a book. You meet the characters and get the full arc that you're teased with in the blurb. That being said, there is serious opportunity for more with Evelyn and crew. I'm looking forward to ENTITY and hopefully getting to dig deeper into Evelyn and Daniel.

Jen's Final Rating: 4 STARS! A super fast paced urban fantasy / paranormal romance. This is one that can easily suck you in to reading in a single sitting. I just wish it had been a bit longer to let the reader have a bit more depth to the characters. I'll definitely be reading the 2nd book (starting it tonight), and hope there is more to come from Patricia Leever.

Psychocat's Final Rating: The best piece of news I have here is that Psychocat didn't show any interest in hanging out with this particular set of demons. So either she isn't all evil or she's just developed a bit of a survival instinct. Either way, she was very much a fan of the crew from Lebriga Corporation.

3.5 out of 5 Stars

Divinity takes place in modern-day Los Angeles, where the demons come out to play even in broad daylight! No one is safe! Demon hunter, Evelyn Brighton, works hard to focus on her responsibility; she’s a strongly independent woman, who’s been working for Lebriga Corporation for a long time and knows what it takes to get the job done. Daniel is a fresh, newbie who from Nevada and comes to Lebriga for a chance to learn. When he meets his new trainer, Eve, he likes what he sees.

This book is a fabulous read for someone who is looking for a mild, paranormal story with a blossoming, flirtatious romance. Eve is bold and sassy and isn’t looking for a soul mate; but she can’t deny fate when her tattoo lights up, confirming that her trainee, Daniel, is the one.

If you like to read about women who can defend themselves and can still play with the guys, then Patricia Leever is your go-to girl! In both her novels, Cat O’ Nine Tails and Divinity, she creates strong females who are extremely brave. Anyone listening to Beyonce’s “Girls?” Even the men in her stories are confident enough to let a woman take the lead. Daniel isn’t a sit-back-and-watch kind of guy; he wants to learn, and he knows Eve is the best at what she does.

In their first missions together, they begin to find a rhythm, and things begin to get ugly, when they realize they have a bigger problem. Demons are taking over Los Angeles! For someone who hasn’t read many paranormal stories or any at all, this is a great first read! If you love romance and want to try something new, add Divinity to your “to-read” list now! Leever describes the demons in great detail, which helps you imagine them clearly and makes you feel the disgust that the characters have when fighting the grotesque creatures. Fun right?

We did think a few things were missing from Divinity. We felt the background of the story could have made the storyline a little bit stronger. The history of Eve herself and how she got there would have allowed the reader to connect even more with her character. We hope Leever expands on Evelyn’s past because we really enjoyed her! It would also be interesting to hear the history of Lebriga and the reasons for the influx of demons. We are excited to see where the story goes next! It’s been confirmed that Leever is writing a sequel to Divinity, and we are thrilled to read more about these characters!

Patricia Leever is a wonderful writer! If you’re interested in reading both of her novels, we definitely recommend you pick up Cat O’ Nine Tails NOW and Divinity, when it releases this coming Tuesday, September 25. Keep up to date with Patricia Leever via her website www.patricialeever.com and follow her on Twitter and FB!

You can buy Leever’s Cat ONine Tails here @ Omnific

I freakin' loved this book! Holy cow, it was so good. Ok I will stop gushing now, and try and write a normal review. I just had to get that squee out. Evie is a demon hunter. The tatoos they get and the magic they carry within them kind of reminded me of shadowhunters in the city of bones series, because they were a little like the runes that they wore. The overall concept is kind of similar. Hunters are people that can see demons lurking around in the real world. They get recruited and train with the sole purpose of fighting and killing those demons. These are all adults, but I liked the dorm like home they lived and trained in. It was cool having all the characters in the story there under one roof. Plus is was a lot of fun watching Evie and Daniel run into each other all the time.

Evie is pretty much the best hunter the organization has ever had, so when they get a fresh new recruit, she is assigned to train him and they kind of become partners for missions. Daniel is good but he is so new that she sometimes gets frustrated with him. Ok, a lot of the time. She is pretty hard on him at first, but she owns that she is kind of a hard-ass. And I loved watching them train. The book switches back and forth between their two point of views. I can't even decide whose point of view I liked reading more. They both really liked each other but Daniel didn't think Evie would give him the time of day romantically because she was all business, and Evie was just scared out of her mind to have feelings for someone. She is scared of losing them. I get that, but for a while in the first half of the book I was just screaming at her like her best friend, Tess, was to just get with the program and do something about her feelings!

I love Daniel. Evie kept calling him cocky, but I never really saw that in him. Not really, I did see that he was determined and stubborn, but never overly cocky. He did really enjoy pushing Evie's buttons and it was hilarious to watch the two of them together. And when they finally did kiss, oh man. I was cheering them on a little bit. I loved it! And I really liked his determination to find out what her tattoo on the back of her neck meant. It was adorable.

I know that the romance was a huge plus for the book, for me, but there is so much more to divinity than the awesome romance. There is a kick butt action and demon slaying. And cool weapons, and tech and flat out awesomeness. I really enjoyed the demon plot of the story. The demons are up to something big, that's for sure. Divinity is going to be a favorite series of mine. I can just feel it. I need to read the prequel book and the next book in the series ASAP. Fans of paranormal and supernatural NEED to read this series. It had more of a new adult vibe to me because Evie and Daniels characters appear to be around 23, but it is classified as Adult.

Chick DJ reviews Divinity by Patricia Leever, as well as the novel’s short prequel, Clarity. This was another book that was won in the Omnific Publishing Supernatural Prize Pack!

Divinity starts right in the middle of the action. Usually, I’m not the sort of person who likes to jump right into a story like that without some background information first. What I didn’t realize at the time is that there’s a good reason for this. Brilliantly done!

Meet Evelyn Brighton…a kick-ass demon hunter with a foul mouth and an attitude to back it up. She’s determined to live her life her way and not let anyone else tell her what to feel or how to act.

Divinity:
Meet Daniel Summers. He’s the new guy on the block in the LA branch of the Labriga Corporation’s demon hunter group. He’s assigned to shadow Evie’s every move. She’s his boss, his trainer, and a royal pain.

As the story unfolds through alternating points-of-view, Evie and Daniel are drawn to each other, even more so while fighting demons. Their tattoos and spells used on the job add to their attraction in ways neither could comprehend.

This urban fantasy story took me by surprise. The humor and emotion, added by not only the main characters but the secondary ones as well, told a page-turning story. There wasn’t a moment where I thought I could put the book down and walk away. The intrigue of what was going to happen next always sat in my mind until the very end… And now I wish for a book 2, desperate to know what happens next with Evelyn and Daniel and the rest of the branch as they take on more demon clans.

Clarity:
This is a free read! It’s a short story that tells us how Evelyn became the awesome demon hunter she is. In Divinity, her background was touched on, but this brings it into focus–from the first moments her family tries to fix her ‘demon seeing ability’ to meeting Tessa, her destined scout, all the way to Evelyn’s first assignment.

I do recommend reading this, especially if you’ve read Divinity. I would recommend you read Divinity first just so you may get the feel for the hunters and scouts before taking in this small backstory.

Overall Rating: 3.25
Story Rating: 3.50
Character Rating: 3.00

First Thought when Finished: Divinity by Patricia Leever was an interesting twist on the standard Angel Urban Fantasy read. The last quarter of the story will have you counting down to the next installment.

What I Thought of the Story: Divinity is the first book in a new series (I think) by Patricia Leever. The story takes place in LA and follows a group of Hunters that keep us safe from Demons. These Demons are visually hidden from most normal people. I thought using a group of Hunters as the center of a new series was fantastic. They were easy to like and the first case we see them deal with is HUGE. The demons are up to more than just the normal "no good" and they have to stop them. I am talking Dr. Evil type of huge (I don't want to give it away). Divinity had a few pacing issues for the first half but the story finished strong. I am hoping we get more of this world.

What I Thought of the Characters:Divinity is basically the story of Evelyn and Daniel. Evelyn has been a Hunter for over 100 years and has relationship issues. Daniel is a new(ish) Hunter and is basically Evelyn's soulmate. Their romance is slow and mostly Evelyn gets in her own way where that is concerned. Divinity utilizes multiple view points switching from Evelyn's to Daniel's POV each chapter. This will work for some people very well but I am not a huge fan of that type of storytelling. I never quite warmed up to Evelyn and Daniel as a couple but I liked them as Hunters! I thought the side characters were great and hope we get to learn more about them as the series progresses. I think my problem was with Evelyn especially after seeing how Daniel thought. I might have had more patience if it was just from her POV. That is just a personal preference though and each reader will have a different reaction.

Final Thoughts: Divinity is a good introduction to a new Urban Fantasy series.

My 2 cents: Patricia Leever needs to kiss her cover artist for the amazing job that was done. This really has to be one of my favorite covers of the year.

Well lets begin with ... that I'm a huge fan of this series now and definitely can't wait for the next one. I have no idea why I do this to myself. I love and hate series, there's always waiting involved and it's even worse, when it'll be a while until the next book comes outs.

So, there's Evelyn, bad-ass old chick (haha), who fights demons. She's 135, but sure doesn't look like it, I'd like to know her secrets! And she's a sassy one, which is my ultimate favor, you pretty much don't want to mess with her at all. She will 100% hand your ass to you on a silver platter.

And then Daniel shows up, noobie, needs A LOT of work, thinks he's all that and a bag of chips. But Evelyn has no problem shutting his cocky attitude down.

Before these two even meet, sparks and all sorts of energy is already flying around. And it takes quite some time for them to both figure out , why they both seem to have this undeniable pull towards each other. With the constant these two do on the matts, I'm sure that doesn't help their attraction towards each other. Of course, it takes time for them to realize what is true between them, Evelyn being the most stubborn one of all. Everyone around them sees and tries to tell her, but she just won't have it.

I absolutely love their relationship, their connection is so intense. I knew the banter between them was going to be great based off the first time they met! The dual POV was awesome, it's one of my favorites, when authors choose that route. I love knowing what they're both thinking at the same time. The story flowed very smoothly, it's jam-packed with action, plenty of wit, the surrounding cast was awesome (I definitely want to learn more about all of them). More than anything, I want to learn more about Evelyn and her past. I just found out that there's a prequel about Evelyn, hopefully that'll share more!

It's one of those books for me that I will read again and again!

Divinity is short, simple, and sweet with a heavy dose of kickass. Think of this as a quick read with the perfect mix of playful and heavy tones in theme… and an excessively difficult female trailed by a man on a mission.

Evelyn Brighton is a 135-year-old demon hunter with an extraordinary skill set that makes her deadly. She has not only mastered the techniques of fighting and magic use, but is one of the few who can wield the prestigious divinity. In short, she is lethal and carries a no bull attitude with a cool, detached demeanor. Evelyn is not the type to loose hold of her tightly wound emotions, at least not until her boss orders her to train the rookie demon hunter, Daniel. Evelyn’s world soon constricts as she struggles to train Daniel and keep the inexplicable pull she feels towards him at bay.

The premise is excellent. Demons, hunting, spells, tattoos… sure those concepts are around, but not quite like they exist in this series. Leever did an interesting thing when she paired the hunter with a handler, one I found rather intriguing. I just wish there was more about the selection process, and of course more about the pull of destiny. World building was straightforward but could have used more attention. I wanted more details than were provided; fortunately what was given was sufficient enough to move the story along.

Characters are unique, each with their own talents, quirks, and personalities. This is something that I value greatly in novels and am happy to say made Leever created such an enjoyable read for me. Are there credible relationship developments? No, no there are not but that is O.K. Though I did get the feeling that the dynamics between the pairs and their romantic interests were just too copacetic.

While the story is predictable, and it has the typical hardass-who-doesn’t-want-to-be-in-love-angst, it works. There is fun and witty banter, interesting plot developments, and likeable characters. The narrative is fluid, with a pace and tone that propels it forward with satisfying ease.

If you are tired of angel/demon PNR books, this might be the one that you will enjoy. It has that aspect, but doesn't really deal with the angel aspect too much. In fact, the main characters are human; they are magical, but human. They do deal with demons. Lots of them. But they don't take over the story.

It's also more of a UF ride than a PNR one. However, those that don't want a read without romance should not despair. There is romance. It's between Evelyn a broken, but tough woman and Daniel the newbie with a lot of potential. I have to be honest, that is the problem I had with the romance. He was just too new and green to be a match for Evelyn. Definitely a potential mate, but not one right away. I also didn't like Daniel for most of it. He was way to arrogant and cocky for such a dangerous job. I didn't feel he respected Evelyn until he consistently started listening to her. It took a while, but he finally did listen. THEN I loved Daniel and started to root for the couple.

The world was quite interesting. I like that the humans that were recruited had special abilities that the tattoos they receive help them access. They also have plenty of interesting and very cool weapons like the Divinity blade that only gets matched with one hunter at a time. However, it is more about the characters than the world. It's a good mix, but you will want to know more about this world as you feel as if you only get a small hint of what is to come later.

I give this book 3 stars. I find it fun, with the element of UF that I enjoy. I can see this series get better as time goes on and the world becomes even more defined.

There are a lot of Urban Fantasies around right now, and the demon/angel theme is proving very popular. Divinity falls into this category, yet does prove to be one of the best in the bunch. There’s a kick-ass heroine, a believable romance (with an interesting dynamic of the lady being the boss) and carefully thought out world that’s introduced with precision and ease.

The hardest thing to do with Urban Fantasy is the world building. Choosing the right bricks and when and where to place them is crucial to ensure that the reader is swept along with it. Not just flooded with info dumps and useless scene setting that has no impact on the actual story line. Fortunately Divinity manages this very well and unfolds neatly as and when it needs to, without forcing knowledge on the reader that would serve no other purpose than to pad out the book.

From a writer’s perspective, some of the prose was a little heavy handed and there were a few classic ‘show don’t tell’ moments, especially when it came to the romance part. The dialogue was a little irritating at times, but hey that kind of makes it more real, after all, not everything people say in reality is either useful or interesting!

The front cover is lovely and I adored the idea of the tattooed spells – I have seen the cover of another book which is almost identical (I think it’s another novella in the same series) and personally think that this is a massive mistake in the marketing. As a reader, I almost passed it by online, thinking I’d already read it!

OMG I have to say that I love love love demon hunter stories. I just love how the underworld comes out and saves the unsuspecting humans. Patricia has done an excellent job of crafting and creating this world where the demon hunters live day to day to protect the humans.

Evelyn is a serious demon hunter that kicks ass first and asks questions later. She has a whole boat load of weapons and she knows how to use them. But her one weapon only she possesses is her divinity blade. When she hits the creatures with the blade they die instantly. As she lives in Los Angeles home of the demons she is working for the Lebriga Corporation. It is when she goes to work one day that she meets the most gorgeous and cocky man ever Daniel and she has to train him.

But as Evelyn starts to train Daniel she realizes that the tattoos on her body react to him as his reacts to her. They feel the pull towards one another but they don't know what it means. And as the monsters and creatures start to attack more humans Evelyn and Daniel have to put their emotions in check and help the humans.

The more and more they fight together the more closer they get. They know they have a connection and want to explore it but will have to wait until the fighting ends. In the end the question remains will they be able to save the humans? Will they be able to explore what they feel for one another?

This is a must read and I need book two like ASAP!

Divinity by Patricia Leever introduces us to demon hunter Evelyn Brighton and the crew working under the Lebriga Corporation. The demon hunters and handlers live in a mansion/compound in Los Angeles, training and waiting for their next assignment to protect human kind from the demons that surround them. Enter Daniel the demon hunter. Evelyn finds herself annoyed with his presence and even more annoyed with the feelings that begin appear anytime he is near, but she is ordered with the task of training him in demon hunting.
I enjoyed the element of demon fighting and the characters found in the crew of hunters and handlers. Each has their own specialty that aids in the hunting process. There was a lot of action and of course demon fighting gadgets along with the ancient Divinity Blade that will only work for Eve. The relationship with Daniel and Eve was witty and fun. The progression was perfect, with no real angst. Eve is up front about everything and I really enjoyed that about her character, she held nothing back. I do feel that there could have been more, the story moved fast and there was a lot going on. I hope that the 2nd installment continues to follow Daniel and Eve through their demon hunting and their relationship. But, even if it continues with other characters I would still love to read it to see what happens next with the whole crew!

2.5 stars

Given that I don't especially care for this genre (urban fantasy), I liked this book more than I thought I would. Friends keep trying to get me to like UF (and Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Laurell K. Hamilton), probably because there are strong women leads and occasional vampires. This one had no vamps. Lots of just about everything else, though, of the demonic sort.

I wouldn't call the characters or story unique, but the book was kinda interesting. I think the characters could have been fleshed out a bit more. Having fewer of them and concentrating on developing deeper personality traits (beyond being cocky or good at fighting)would have made me connect more with the book. I liked the tenderness and trust that developed between the two main characters. I would have liked more beyond the constant banter, which got tiresome.

I confess to skimming through fight scenes and the details about the demon's looks and powers, but that's because I'm just not that into those, either. I do think fans of UF might enjoy the magic and the ceremony, which are addressed in better detail. I think this might be book one of a series, but not sure.

I absolutely loved this book if you are a fan of the Mortal Instruments this is the book for you. It’s like those books just on crack and more grown up. You have hunters and handlers trying to rid the world of all things evil like trolls and demons.

Evelyn is a 135 year old badass demon hunter. She has been through her fair amounts of assignments, and has done it alone she doesn’t want or need any one because of what might happen if she lost them

Daniel is the newbie, rookie, and ass-hat if you will (Evelyn’s words). He doesn’t like being new and he certainly like getting his ass handed to him day in and day out by Evelyn.

The book has major chemistry between the two leads, just one stubborn; bull headed lady doesn’t want to admit it. There is just so much action in the book and so much going on I do not want to give it away. Trust me you will not be disappointed if you read this.

I always like the books that have the main character that kicks butt and takes no crap. Evelyn is just like that. All she wants is to live life and take down any Demon or Troll that is around. She is the best at what she does and she has been doing this for a long time.
Then when two new people come to the house, she gets stuck training with one of them. But if I was her, I would have no problem wrestling around with some hot, sexy guy. Daniel annoys the crap out of her and now she has to make sure he does not get hurt while they are out on the next mission.
However she can't help herself for feeling something and he feels the same. However the last mission may prevent them from being together. It is the Demon from Hell and she has to take him down.
I will leave at that so I don't ruin all the fun. I liked it up to the last page. If you love Fantasy books, this is right down your ally.

I rate the book a 4.2. Go get it!

Nanee's Review: review by upallnightreadallday.blogspot.com

The characters fit perfectly together and the story is creatively written and unique. Evelyn is a amazingly strong self assured women who takes no shit off anybody but met her match when Daniel comes in the picture. Daniel loves spending time with Evelyn but hates the training she puts him through. Love their banter and competition with each other and their secret thoughts and glances. Love the tattoos they all are magical. Tons of action, training, mystical creatures and magic. I wish Evelyn and Daniel's feelings for each other and sex were more of a focus, it was barely touched on and alittle almost after thought but over all the story was unique and interesting. 3.50 to 4 stars

I wish I could give this book 3.5 stars. It was *almost* really good. Interesting concept, interesting (and kickass) characters, the writing was just a little clumsy. I suspect this author will be much better a few books down the line...

Our Heroine and Our Hero are both demon hunters. She's a century-old hardened pro, he's a wet-behind-the-ears rookie assigned to her. She is reluctant to open her heart, but the physical attraction is immediate and obvious.

I think if the author works a little more on show-don't-tell, she'll be someone to look out for in the future...

I'd say if anything this was an 'interesting' read. I didn't find it boring but I didn't absolutely adore it. I found that it was in the middle. It was well written and edited to. I can only assume that this will turn into or is the start of a series. I can only hope it keeps getting better.
