In a bold political move, Sir Branford claims a handmaid as his bride instead of the expected princess in an attempt to spark a war. Poor Alexandra knows little of how to behave as the wife of a future king and knows nothing of the man who is suddenly her husband.

Alexandra knows she is being used as a pawn and must do her best to avoid scheming noblewomen and the scorned princess, accept her position as her husband ascends to the throne, and overcome her fears of the man with whom she now shares a bed.

Sir Branford is determined to have it all – the kingdom, a wife of his choosing, and the revenge he seeks for the death of his father. He doesn’t expect the naïve handmaid to become more important than he ever could have foreseen.

4 "My...Branford" Stars

description

I found this first book of a seven book series to be a light, easy to follow and very enjoyable story. I was worried being a historic romance that I would have trouble following the plot since we are dealing with handmaidens, lords and kings. However, this was an easy story line and interesting enough to read on to propel me forward into the series.

The hero, Sir Branford of Silverhelm attends and wins a joust in a neighboring kingdom. He then shocks the King of Hadebrand by not picking Princess Whitney but the princess’ handmaid, Alexandra.

description

Alexandra slowly starts to realize the reasons why she was chosen to be a bold political move by her husband. She only knows servitude and has seen what happens when royals and nobles are not shown the proper respect so she is timid, she is naïve and sexually inexperienced.

description

Though I’m hoping that the heroine slowly starts to get a backbone with each book I do understand she comes from a life of serving those in the position she now holds. Many questions are posed to her and though she is attracted to her husband and they are slowly working their way to consummating their marriage I'm guessing there is danger ahead.

”Was my husband’s intent to start a war with Hadebrand? And I was a …what did he call me? A catalyst? What did that mean? Could I really be considered an enemy of Hadebrand, the only home I had ever known?”

"I choose her."
description

The Handmaid is the first book in the Unexpected Circumstances Series. Shay Savage has blown me away once again with this romantic historical saga of Sir Branford and the lovely Lady Alexandra. With intrigue, romance, and undeniable passion, this trip back in time is one that you will not want to miss!
description
Alexandra has spent her entire life as a handmaid for Princess Whitney. As a servant, she lives to serve the nobles in the castle and take care of their every whim and desire. When a traveling Knight wins the big jousting tournament, the King grants him the choice of any woman of the kingdom to take as his bride. To everyone's shock and disbelief, the Knight selects Alexandra to take back to his Kingdom as his bride and Lady.

Sir Branford, the Knight, has strategized a grand plan to start a war, and he is using Alexandra as his pawn. Branford is quite dashing, and he is more than pleased with his selection of the beautiful blushing handmaid. However, can a handmaid truly transform into a Lady?

description
"Be sure to breathe, Alexandra."
As Sir Branford and Lady Alexandra return to the Kingdom, the court is in shock with Branford's new bride. Alexandra is struggling with her new position as a noblewoman and as a virgin, she has much to learn when it comes to the ways of men. Branford is dashing and fiercely protective of his new bride and will stop at nothing to make her feel welcome and safe in his new kingdom and his arms.
description
Overall, The Handmaid was a quick read that left me aching for more. The dynamics between Branford and Alexandra were simply addictive. Alexandra is so timid and unsure and Branford is confident and a force to be reckoned with. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them together and the complex dance that has begun between the two. I am not normally a historical romance reader and yet, if Shay Savage is writing, I am 100% in....every time! This was a stunning start to this series and I cannot wait to see what happens next! LOVED IT!!!!!

Reminded me of a sweet old-time Prince and Princess story. Book one of seven in this series, available on KU as a bundle.

I adore Shay Savage’s writing. She has the ability to write almost any genre with such ease. Two favorites are Transcendence and Surviving Raine (one sweet, the other brutal, both amazing).

This story is simple - a poor handmaid is taken as a bride to a prince. She’s your typical peasant, sheltered and unaware of what is expected of her in her new roll. The prince is used to getting what he wants, his tent is always occupied after those jousting matches. Once he meets his new bride, he’s such a gentleman.

Alexandra realizes that she’s a pawn in this game Sir Branford is playing, but what else can she do?

No steam, but some playing between the sheets. I’m invested to see what will happened with this adorable couple, on to the second book!!

Sometimes, you just need a good, old-fashioned, bodice-ripper...Savage Style!

I'm so glad this is FINALLY going to go live! It has been a long time coming! Knights in shining armor, a beautiful young maid out of her comfort zone, back-stabbing noblewomen, and the rumblings of war.

Hope you all enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it!

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Shay Savage’s writing, it doesn’t matter what trope, genre or theme she is writing about and exploring, you can always guarantee that she will always put her own unique twist on things.

I believe that the Unexpected Circumstances series, is not her first foray into the Historical fiction arena, but it is my first time reading anything from her from the genre, and once again I wasn’t disappointed. If you are not a fan of serialised novellas then be prepared because this one comes in seven parts, but the good thing is they are all due to be released in relatively close proximity to each other, so things aren’t left up in the air for too long between releases.

This is definitely the start of the story between, Bran and Alexandra, and I absolutely adored that the author hasn’t rushed anything with them as a couple, in the area of the bedroom.

"I promise you will tremble underneath my touch.
I promise you will find ecstasy like you never imagined.
I promise you will call out my name when I lie on top of you,
And I will fill you over and over again until you simply cannot take any more pleasure..."

After being chosen as his Bride, Alexandra is all of a tizz, especially considering on a social level she is an absolute nobody a Handmaiden, so having the heir to the throne of the neighboring kingdom pick her causes more than a stir, especially as it was expected for him to choose the Princess that Alexandra essentially works for. But Sir Brandford Sterling, doesn’t like doing what is expected of him, especially if it means he is going to be stuck married to a woman he cannot abhor.

The story doesn’t progress too far in The Handmaiden this is very much a setting-the-scene installment with character introductions aplenty, that-said one thing that can be felt from the get-go is the sizzling chemistry between the innocent maiden and the weary nobleman.

This novella is just the beginning of their story, and I am absolutely dying to find out where the author takes this couple as their relationship progresses, not to mention the rest of the larger story, as it starts to play out around them. Not too long to wait as The Seduction, is due for release 14th June, and I think you can guess which direction Bran and Alexandra’s story is heading!

ARC generously provided by the author, and it was an absolute pleasure to provide the above honest review.

It had been a long time since I picked up a historical romance and I'm surprised Shay Savage had decided to treat us to a seven part series with Unexpected Circumstances. Game on!

With this first part, The Handmaid, we are headed to a great start. This was told entirely from the heroine, Alexandra's POV. She is a young handmaid of who is innocent and naive and live a simple life serving the princess. When Sir Branford, heir to the throne, chose Alexandra to be his new wife, she was more than perplexed. What on earth is happening?

This is one short engaging read whereby I'm fascinated with the hero, Sir Branford and his blatant rebellious act to incite a war. Although he used Alexandra as a political pawn, he is still very much a gentleman and a man of his words. I enjoyed seeing how Alexandra try to navigate her new life that had turned up side down all of a sudden.

There seems to be a lot going on in just the first installment alone. I can't imagine what Shay Savage had in store for us for the subsequent six installments. Things are gonna be interesting for sure.

The Handmaid (Unexpected Circumstances, #1) is book one in Shay Savage's new historical romance series. I was surprised to find this book fairly engaging and enjoyable since I picked it up on a whim.

The story is told entirely in Alexandra's POV and begins with a tournament of Knights. When Branford, is deemed the winner he comes forward to claim his prize.
 photo joust201_zpsleb8dk2s.jpg
“Sir Branford, good knight of the neighboring realm of Silverhelm, we are honored today by your presence and your bravery! Come forth and name your prize!”

Instead of choosing Princess Whitney as expected, Branford, in a bold political move decides on a simple handmaid, Alexandra.

“The handmaid?” the king called out. “Is this a jest?”

Alexandra knows little of how to behave as the wife of a future king and knows nothing of the man who is suddenly her husband. Alexandra and Branford are soon wed and Alexandra is thrust in to the world of the noble.
 photo 852286_1318230932558_full_zpsdylfivks.jpg
“Do not fear, my wife. You will always be safe with me.”

Branford is sweet, kind and gentle towards Alexandra and soon an attraction begins to develop between the two. Unfortunately I have to wait until book two comes out to find out what happens but Shay Savage leaves us with an ending that is absolutely Swoon Worthy!!!

Ah..a Historical romance. A short and enticing story, that gives the dreamers hope for a better tomorrow.

Shay Savage has done an amazing job, in getting me back into reading. I've been in a slump for this year. And after starting this book, I simply couldn't stop and couldn't wait for the other instalments.

A truly romantic tale of a handmaid, turned noble, through marriage. When Sir Branford chooses Alexandra, a handmaid, as his bride; over the titled Princes Whitney. The Royal uproar created has me in such euphoria. Sigh..such sweet bliss.

Taking a commoner into nobility proved truly trying and confusing for Branford and even more so for Alexandra to become accustomed to. Her traditional, shy behaviour, coupled with Branford's brash and rough mannerisms. Has Alexandra constantly cowering in fear.

I loved every tidbit of the novella. It made me remember my childhood days of reading all these endearing historical love stories. A wonderful, must read tale.

I love my historical stories and I loved Shay's books, that's no secret.
But "THIS"?????

A doormat spineless heroine with an over the top chauvinist cheating asshole as a hero, no way I'll recommend this to my friends !

Sure Alexandra was a shy virgin and all, and he's proudly announced to her he has shares his lots of princesses in his bed to her and cheated on her with someone on their second wedding night is beyond me. And demanded her to do what a handmaid's job as his wife?
Not to mention 'OUTING' Princess Whitney debauchery in front of her people, whatever dirty was she, that's an act of an asshole.
And the only reason he can bare NOT to take Alexandra on their wedding night, he can get it somewhere else ! Bastard !

And this Bradford need a serious anger management !
There's nothing sexy about this guy. UGH.

This was my first Shay Savage and I LOVEEDDDDDD IT.

It was short and it left me wanting more? YASSS.
Do I care? NOOOOO
Why? Because it was lovely!!! I really enjoy reading Historical Romance books and this was swoon-worthy!!

Loveeeeee Alexandra since the beginning. She was young, very young but she wasn't childish, her innocence was what drew me in. She was so pure. And I wanted to protect her from the bitchy Princess.

Sir Branford, OH LORDY, I Love himmmmmm. I want him to take me to his castle and do bad things to my body LMAO. He better not playing hide the pickle with the other chick because I'm not going to be happy. Gaaaaaah!

Even though it was a short story, there was a lot going on, and I can't wait to see what will happen.

JUST 3 NIGHTS, my Lord. Mwah!

Fuck. So three years ago I read my first historic/period type romance. It was Worth by Shay Savage. Fast forward a few years and I read a few sci-fi type romances, again... Shay’s doing. This woman keeps pushing me out of my comfort zone and every time she proves that if the writing is solid, the story has a hook, the reader (no matter how convinced it isn’t their thing) will love it.

The Handmaid is the first in a seven part serial series called Unexpected Circumstances. But don’t fear the dreaded serial! There is a steady release schedule and pre-orders are up for book two already. Sir Branford is offered up a prize of his choice, only, he doesn’t want the princess... he wants her handmaid. In a swift political move, Branford insults the neighboring King and his plan is set into motion. But Alexandra is nothing like he expected. He didn’t intend to have any feelings for his new bride, but things quickly change.

This was a quick read, that instantly held my attention from page one. When I hit the last page, I was craving part two, I might have stomped my foot, maybe, a few times....

Shay Savage does it again. Another stellar story that has this reader wanting all the books. Now, since this is just the first installment of the series, I am hovering at a four star read – I think as the story progresses and the full plot is exposed, this has potential to get to a five star – but we are still in early days of the series.

Once upon a time a long long time ago I went to my first book signing and there was this lady there with crazy colored hair and she was all like I wrote a romance about a caveman and you should totally read it and I was like uh, I’ll pick it up on kindle and give it a try. And then I went home and got said book. But it took me forever to read it. When I finally got around to reading that book I could not put it down. Transcendence was one of the best books I have ever read. It was so original and I decided then and there to read all of the Shay Savage books ever written and I pretty much did. Moral of the story is: get every damn book signed, ALWAYS! I am still kicking my own butt over not getting Ms. Savage to sign all of the books, especially that epically awesome caveman book. So anyhow, I haven’t read a historical romance in a long while but I do enjoy them and when I saw this one from an author that I know I can trust to deliver an epic love story I snatched this bad boy up. Well, and also look at that sexy historical bodice ripping cover. I am absolutely in love with it and I am happy to report that I am in love with first installment of the Unexpected Circumstances, The Handmaid. My understanding is that this is a serial and there will be several small installments but the first one was fantastic. We get to meet Alexandra, the handmaid, and Sir Brandford, the heir to the throne of another land. Sir Brandford is brave and bold and he whisks Alexandra the meek handmaid right off her feet. The sexual tension is off the charts with these two and I cannot wait to see what is coming next for them and these two kingdoms. A great beginning to an action filled, sexually heated historical romance. I am very anxious for the next installment, The Seduction.

So utterly disappointed ! I expected so much of it after reading the UFO that was Transcendence, that I preordered it ! At times like this I am so happy that I am an e-reader and that I can have the book refunded... It is so out of question that this piece of whatever it is supposed to be stay on my bookshelve even if it is only a virtual bookshelve !

This book is so wrong I do not even know where to start !

1. The "hero"

This guy is a thorough asshole and the most disgusting hypocrite ever.

-> I can not believe that the guy slutshamed the woman that slept with him under the excuses that she throwed herself at him, and you know that is SOOO repellent when women act upon their desire that she had been crossed off the list of potential fiancée and that he openly expressed his disgust of her and stated in front of her family that she was not a virgin anymore. Well of course he knows that! HE was the one to take her virginity as well as the virginity of half of the princesses he knows !!!
And He is so PROUD of it ! He basks in delight !

I am sorry was the slutshaming compulsory to show us HOW wonderfully virtuous was the VIRGIN female protagonist ? NO ! ALWAYS NO ! FOREVER NO ! There is no excuses, no good reasons to slut shaming EVER ! EVER EVER EVER EVER !

-> -> His relationship to our so weak-so spineless heroine summarized :

“"Alexandra,” Sir Branford said, tilting my head up to his. “As my wife, I have certain expectations of you. Do you understand what I am saying?” “Yes, my lord,” I whispered. I simply couldn't make my voice go any louder, still unsure exactly how angry he was with me. I hadn’t meant to upset him—truly I hadn’t. “The first expectation I have is that you will always treat me with respect.” “Of course, my lord.” Had I been disrespectful? Did he think I meant to refuse him? I swallowed hard.
“I expect you to keep my rooms in order and conduct yourself in such a way as not to embarrass me.” “Yes, my lord.” “I expect you to care for me as a wife should. You will cook and clean for me and take care of my needs. Someday, I will expect you to bear my childrens""

-> -> -> Clearly the guy as anger managment issue as he intended to kill a poor guy because his dulcinee can not walk properly she is so fragile and so weak that she tumbled over herself in the mud and dirtied herself... The guy drew his sword in an intent to properly kill a poor coachman that has nothing to do with the fact that his wife can't stand properly on her two legs !!!!
Is he supposed to appear " MANLY" , "SEXY", " APPEALING" with this scene ?! It was APPALING sir ! It is only blatant violence !
Man, Go take anger managment classes would you ?!

2. The bland-spineless heroine

I SWEAR that 9 out of 10 lines she says in this book are these following words :

“Of course my…Branford.”

I just can't....

3. SMEXY ?

Well I supposed that the combo VIRGIN + CAVEMAN was intended to just allow this book to not bother with storylines and well-build characters and go straight to the point : SEX.

A bodice ripper story ? Ha ! Let me laugh ! I mean at least she should have done this right no ?
There is no steam, nothing entancing or sensual about this book ! NONE !

4. Storyline ...

Is this story supposed to go somewhere or to even start ...... Is there even a story ?

*Sigh* this book ... When I read it the only excuses I could find was that Shay Savage was "forced" to write it.. She is under contract and has to write a certain number of books in her contract and so she just wrote ... something .....anything... an editor proposed the classic Virgin/Asshole story and voilà !

Yep, I truly hope it's that.

☆ I received an ARC via the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!! ☆

Argh! I already want bk2!! The Handmaid had me on pins and needles with intrigue and sexual tension. Lord Branford seems like a kind and considerate prince-- well, aside from his notorious past of womanizing-- he seems to be changing and evolving with his interactions with Alexandra. You can see that there are many faucets and more than meets the eye when it comes to him and his motives which include choosing a neighboring kingdom's handmaiden over the princess as his choice of bride.

UC8

But with political upheavals and social caste discords in the mix, it looks like there's going to be definite resistance, scandals, and devious scams of deceit to come.

UC6

Just hope these two budding lovers will be able to stand testament to that and FINALLY get down to the down and dirty! Hehe.

UC7

Bring on THE SEDUCTION!

I'm a huge fan of SS's writing style, from what I've read so far-

I don’t often read HR but I figured it’s Shay. This is an interesting start to this historical serial.

Branford is a knight who, to not give any one the satisfaction, picked a handmaid, Alexandra, for a bride. Right from the start, Alexandra is at a disadvantage because of her status. She’s like a fish out of water in this new world that she found herself in; so much insecurity and doubt, poor Alexandra. And she’s so naïve, barely a knowledge outside of her old role of a handmaid.

Branford seems as noble in his actions as his title. While not totally selfless in his motives to do the thing he did, he seems like a decent man.

For a change, this is not a male POV which I’ve usually associated with Shay. So that’s different in and of itself. And seeing this is just the start to the serial, it’s just laying down the foundation of the story. We shall see where Shay will take this…

WARNING:

It had been awhile since I had enjoyed a Shay Savage romance. I was so sick of the usual prostitutes and OW she would throw in the story that I had given up on her books. I'm glad I took a chance on this series because I devoured the book! The suspense is fantastic and I really quite like her use of female POV. She's so famous for her male POV and I hadn't liked her last female POV book, however, this one worked out well

☆☆☆☆☆Unexpected Circumstances is a 5 Star read!☆☆☆☆☆

THIS. BOOK. THIS ENTIRE SERIES! OMG, the angst!!! I felt everything single emotion from being totally pissed to crying from the heartache to feeling such joy.

I can't recommend it enough. It blew me away with it's depth of plot and characters. Y'all know I only recommend books that I truly believe in. Hell, I give a lot of low ratings when books don't meet my standards and I DNF a lot too with no apologies. I expect top notch storytelling and a high quality product when I spend hours of my life dedicated to that product. GET THIS BOOK, LADIES! You will not be disappointed.

Oh please spare me!!!!! You know Ms.Savage that damsel-in-distress are my weakness, so u tried to lure me in with this one didn't you?

Well,guess what? ......

🤔Before y'all loose your mind, let me tell you that in this book-

1.)Hero is a knight/warrior/prince/royalty........... alpha-male and all that blahblahblah.....

2.)I give him 3 stars for his OTT behaviour.

This one below, made me discontinue this series-👇

HE HAS BEDDED VIRGINS BEFORE.

IN-FACT, HE MARRIED THE h BECAUSE HE WANTED TO PISS OFF PRINCESS WHITNEY AND HER PARENTS BECAUSE THEY WANTED HIM TO MARRY PRINCESS WHITNEY, WHICH WILL RESULT IN THE ALLIANCE OF THE 2 KINGDOMS, BUT BECAUSE PRINCESS WHITNEY WAS NOT A VIRGIN(Guess why? Because a year ago she had given her virginity to the hero herself) SO HE DID NOT WANT TO MARRY HER.

3.)Virgin h. AND THOSE TWO STARS RIGHT THERE? THEY BELONG TO THE h, THE HERO GETS NOTHING FROM MY SIDE. THE h WAS A MAID SO , SHE WAS VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY SHY, VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY DOORMAT(fiminists might wannna skip this one😉)

4.)And if you still care then i might as well let you know that, the secondary characters aka the H's family is VERY AMAZING. Very supportive and amazing.

5.)THIS IS A CLIFF-HANGER.

6.)TOO-MUCH INNER-MONOLOGUES OF h. BUT I GET IT, SHE WAS PRINCESS WHITNEY'S MAID, AND SUDDENLY MARRIED TO A PRINCE, SHE HAD INSECURITIES THE SIZE OF CHINA.

7.)I SAY THAT THIS BOOK HAS CHEATING, BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH THERE IS NO DESCRIPTION OF SEX-SCENES WITH OM/OW, THE h CAUGHT HIM SNEAKING INTO THE BUSHES(what kind of a knight does it in the bushes ?) WITH OW.

I FELT LIKE SLICING HIS THROAT WITH HIS OWN SWORD.

8.)THIS IS A HISTORICAL ROMANCE BTW, AND I THINK THAT IF THE h is SO SO SO SO TIMID, INSECURE,SHY,NAIIVE,FRAGILE,SWEET,APOLOGETIC, ETC ETC ETC THEN THE HERO SHOULD BE SUPER OTT, BUT HE IS.............🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢.

9.)I COMPLETED THIS ONE ONLY BECAUSE OF THE h. BUT SOMETIMES I WANTED TO WRING HER NECK AND WAS LIKE."HE IS NOT IN LOVE WITH YOU, JSUT LEAVE HIM!!!!!!!!!!"

10.)🟥NO DESCRIPTIVE SEX-SCENES WITH OW/OM.
🟥DRAMA WITH OW? YES...AND IT CONTINUES IN THE SERIES FURTHUR. AND YES HE SLEPT
WITH A FEW OF THEM IN THE PAST........SLEPT AS IN....TOOK THERE V-CARDS.
🟥HEA AT THE END OF THE SERIES.
🟥THE SPEED IS SUPER-SLOW OF THE STORY, SO SUIT YOURSELF.

This series is one of those “please, take my money” reading experiences from Shay Savage. I bought each novella individually only to discover at the end of the last instalment that Unexpected Circumstances: The Complete Series is available on Kindle Unlimited and it has a bonus scene. Ha ha! Who cares? (Insert more maniacal laughter) Like I said, "TAKE MY MONEY!"

I am not going to review each novella, so here are my thoughts on the whole series. What a wildly historically inaccurate bodice-ripping romp. One minute there is no sex; then there is all the sex; a bit of a plot with some revenge and backstabbing shenanigans on the side, then more weird sex and loads of violence.

This book was mayhem of no truly identifiable era. Just look at the cover art! However, I will argue that the writing is excellent for what it is, and the story is reminiscent of Kristen Ashley's Fantasyland series. Minus the paranormal hoo-ha and time travel elements

What a fantastic way to spend a genuinely mindless Sunday.

The Handmaid is a part of a serial series.

What this story entitles is a handmaiden named Alexandra who has to take care of Princess Whitney to be ready for her engagement to the man who wins a joust from a neighboring kingdom.

Only, when Lord Branford comes, he chooses Alexandra to wed over Princess Whitney. Sir Branford chooses Alexandra-the handmaid over Whitney is to make a political statement against Princess Whitney and her family.

Now, wed Alexandra has to move with Branford to his home and be his wife. Only she is a young noble woman and obviously has never had any kind of sexual relations with a man so she is very frightful of this man she does not know.

I really do love historical novels and wish I could read more of them. This to me was very accessible because it was short and used words for me to understand the story. Yes, the language was a reflection of the time period we are in, but it wasn't Old English if you know what I'm saying.

I cannot wait to read more and see Alexandra become more comfortable with Branford and consummate their marriage. Lol.

Title: The Handmaid (Unexpected Circumstances #1)
Author: Shay Savage
Category: Historical Romance
POV: Heroine's POV
Characters: 4
Plot: 3.75
Scorching Level: 3.5

It's been a while since I've read historical romance and this was a smooth transition to it!
What happens when a Prince decides to wed a handmaid on a whim?
Alexandra is Princess Whitney's handmaid. When a handsome prince chooses her as his bride in order to use her as a political pawn, her entire life is turned upside down.
Sir Branford never expected to be charmed by his young wife. Can their unorthodox union work or has he made a terrible mistake with his blushing bride?
I liked the writing. I did find the dialogue a bit repetitive, but this was an easy and fun read.
Alexandra is extremely timid and she is lost in her sudden marriage.

What happened to me? How had I gone from a relatively happy, if penniless, to the wife of the heir to the crown from the nest kingdom in a single day?

Branford seems like a kind and thoughtful prince, but I am waiting for the next book in order to have a complete picture of his character.
This is a good start, and even though I found aspects of the plot a bit predictable I still enjoyed it. Still, I am very eager to read the next part! Bring it on!
I recommend this one for a light and entertaining read.

3.75~4 Stars

Well, fuck. Here I am getting in the thick of things with an EXPENSIVE serial from one of my favorite authors. So, after reading this first one, I bought the second one and then I just had to buy all seven which came to a total cost of $21 for basically an extended length novel. Was the series great? yes! Is this author worth the price? Yes! Can I budget in $21 for basically an extended length novel? Nope! Yeah, this is just too expensive for me and I doubt I'll be spending that in the future but this one got me.

Historical Romance: first in this genre by this author and it was really good. It wasn't so great that I'd give it 5 stars and recommend to anyone despite the price but I was really surprised at the overall product from an author that has never delved into this genre before. And it's not a typical HR. It's more gritty and I don't think there are any sexy times until #3 or #4. However, the story itself is so interesting as well as all the characters. I also enjoyed several historical details in this story that I have never read before. Ex: the segregation of women from the men during their menstrual cycle.

Problems: It's not that noticeable till book #3, but there is a point where the reader may become annoyed at the amount of the overplayed introspections in regards to, "is he serious or not" along with the "i have to protect her therefor I'm not going to tell her anything". Another huge problem I had with the series in a whole was that they seemed to be able to travel to different lands or regions within the space of a couple or few hours. That just doesn't jive with what I know about history at the time. What should take 1-2 days, only ends up taking a few hours and what should take 2-3 days only takes around 10-12 hours when considering the mode of transportation. This didn't end up taking me out of the enjoyment of the story but I kept thinking about it every time it happened.

Potential: This series really could have been epic on the "Highlander" scale if the author wanted to do that; and I believe she is capable. Unfortunately, I think the author was really just in it for the money and just pushed out the whole story in segments that end up costing way too much.

simplistic, harlequinesque, anachronistic - Should not be 3 books. 3-3.5 stars. Maybe my rating will change after reading the trilogy?

If you’re reading this book, then by now you must be familiar with Shay Savage’s writing style. More closely: her style of romance writing. Take that and add a historical story and kings, knights, lords, and princesses and it creates…
SOMETHING AMAZING
SOMETHING BEUATIFUL
BLISS
A NEW FAVORITE
See where I’m going here?
I am a sucker for historical romances. I love Shay’s stories. The mixture of the two is just perfect.

I find the book starts out a little abruptly. Alexandra, a princess’s handmaiden is helping prep the princess to sit at a tournament. The winner of the tournament, Sir Branford, is granted a prize from the king: any girl’s hand in marriage, in the hopes that he would pick the princess to unite the two kingdoms. For a minute, I believed he would. I thought he would choose the princess, and Alexandra as her lady’s maid would go with her to Branford’s kingdom. From there, he would fall in love with her and it’d create a forbidden romance. Instead Shay creates a likeable character from the start by giving him a backbone. He basically tells the king to stick it and takes Alexandra as a bride instead. I liked this entire part for its drama but rather than starting the book off with that I wish it didn’t happen till chapter two, so that chapter one could have been more of an introduction for Alexandra. Since the book is in her perspective, but we really have no information about her. A chapter about her life could have been that introduction. It would have provided an insight to her life as the princess’ maid, which gives context to what exactly Branford is taking her away from and how her life will be better now.

I am super intrigued with the characters in this book. I find Alexandra to be kinda bland, but I’m assuming as the books go on and she gets less scared of this life, that she’ll burst from a shell and be more interesting. Something is there, I feel, and I can’t wait to explore it. Branford is a whole other thing entirely. The book sets him up to be likeable. First he defies the king, as well as his own, by not taking the princess as a bride, and then he is super sweet with her. A conversation in the carriage ride home with his cousin shows him to be a deeper character than first perceived. He has plans and Alexandra is either changing those or is a part of them… Later in the book she hears a conversation between him and another woman that again, raises flags. There seems to be many sides of him. He’s kind with Alexandra but something else behind her back. I’m excited for the development of his character and to see exactly what kind of plot he will be concocting.
I was quite surprised the characters are holding off on sex. Almost doesn’t seem like a Savage book without it lol. I’m assuming the rest of the series will have lots.

I loved this book and I thank the author for the ARC I received. I can’t wait for book 2!

“I will always keep you safe.”

Sir Branford & Alexandra ♥

Yes! Ahhh so good, such an amazing story, I can't even put it in words. Shay Savage is back with an epic series and I'm there, all the way!

I've been waiting years to see this little gem published and finally, here it is! As most of Shay's book if not all of them I've read them as fanfiction back in the days and this was by far one of my favorite stories, along with so many others of hers like Transcendence and the Caged series! This is a stunning start to a brilliant historical series. Everything starts when Sir Brandford in order to get revenge for his parents' death, he doesn't claim the King's daughter as his wife after his win, but takes the maid that happened to be sitting next to her at the tournament, Alexandra.

He smiled and whispered a single word. “Lovely.”

Alexandra is so different from him, naturally, she grew up serving the Princess and she is suddenly thrust into this world completely different from the one she knows, she's bound to be shaken up and make some serious mistakes, like trust people she's not supposed to.

The Unexpected Circumstances series will be released back to back so you don't have to wait long for them and you'll love it, it is hand down another amazing delivery by Shay Savage and I'm so thrilled for everyone to read this series, prepare to have your world rocked people!
