Clipped Wings #0.5

Cupcakes and Ink

Rate this book
Tenley Page is looking for a new start: a new city, a new apartment, a new life. Her plan is to keep to herself and stay focused. But leaving her past behind and starting over isn’t as easy as she thought. And neither is maintaining her solitude. As Tenley settles into her new surroundings, she finds herself drawn to Inked Armor, the tattoo studio across the street. But it’s the gorgeous, dark-haired tattoo artist who captures her interest. There’s something about his severe beauty that captivates her—and not just in her waking hours.

Covered in the ink he inscribes on other people’s skin, Hayden Stryker has made a career out of being a tattooist. He’s got his own business and a tight circle of friends. As far as he’s concerned, that’s all he needs. At least until his aunt, who owns the antiques and used book store across from his tattoo studio, hires a new employee. At first his intrigue is based on physical appeal; hot chick equals something nice to look at. But as he begins to catch glimpses of the fiery personality under the fragile, feminine exterior, his fascination with Tenley grows. Annoyed by his inability to control his fixation, Hayden decides the best way to cure him of the new obsession is to get to know the girl under her skittish façade.

But like the ink he wears as armor, Tenley has the ability to get under his skin and stay there.

I find this prequel novella of Clipped Wings quite promising. I enjoyed both Tenley and Hayden's POVs and how they began to feel attracted to each other after a series of brief encounters. Although they really didn't get to talk and get to know each other here, still, this novella opened up so much possibilities for the series. It is my first time to read something that is written by Helena Hunting and I already love her writing. Now I am excited for Clipped Wings!

“More than the art, though, I wanted to see him up close up to confirm what I was already certain of: that his ink was as beautiful as he was.”

Title: Cupcakes and Ink
Series: Yes. Clipped Wings #0.5 (Doesn't have to be read before Clipped Wings)
Author: Helen Hunting
Release Date: February 3rd, 2014
Rating: 4 stars
Cliffhanger: No
HEA:

Capcakes and Ink is a short novella that will introduce you to Tenley and Hayden and show you a little bit of both of them; just enough to make you want crack open the full lengthened novel, Clipped Wings the same minute it’ll come out. It’s just a quick taste of how awesome could be their story and I devoured it in matter of one hour.

In only sixty pages, Helena Hunting made me fall in love with both of her characters. I guess, I just have a thing for sexy tattoo artist with facial piercings, though Hayden has a great perspectives to not be only tattoo hottie stereotype. I think we’ll get to see more of him and I can’t wait to do so.

Anyway, Cupcakes and Ink was a great glimpse into his mind and I adored every second of it. There is something in Hayden that made my hormones go overdrive ;)

I also quickly connected with Tenley. She’s one of those relatable heroines that didn’t annoy me.

It was amazing how good this sixty pages were to hook me. I found Cupcakes and Ink to be a great little teaser for what is going to come next. I officially am looking forward to getting to know these characters more.

★★★☆ 3.5 stars!

Cupcakes and Ink was a short, intriguing novella and the prequel to the full length novel Clipped Wings. It introduces the two main characters of the series and gives us some background information about how they first meet.

Tenley is a girl, looking for a fresh start. A new city, a new job, a new college and maybe even some new friends, she's determined to leave her troubled past behind and move on with her life. Tenley has decided to keep a low profile but her neighbor across the street who owns the tattoo shop Inked Armor has piqued her interest and even though she's incredibly shy around him, she sees no trouble in admiring him and his masculine beauty from a safe distance.

Hayden is the talented, inked up tattoo-artist whose life is dedicated to his work and his close circle of friends. He doesn't need another distraction in his life but ever since meeting the new girl who works in his aunt antique shop across the street, he's finding it hard to stop thinking about her and visiting his aunt's shop in hopes of catching a glimpse of her. His only possible solution to satisfying his curiosity is striking up a conversation with her and trying to get to know her.

For now, we only get a glimpse of their interactions, but I have a feeling there's much more in store for these two and I can't wait to continue with the rest of this series!

"For the first time in years, I wanted…something. Anything. As long as it was real."

My Tenley and Hayden:

In the first half of this novella, readers are introduced to Tenley, witnessing her move to new city, seeing her interest being intrigued by local tattoo artist Hayden. Also we see how lonely and sad Tenley really is...
"I was fascinated by the goings-on inside the tattoo shop. It was a distraction from the emptiness of my apartment, which was an echo of the feelings in my chest."

Second half of this novella shows Hayden's growing attraction towards this new girl who just moved into the neighbourhood. How will he approach this skittish girl he cannot get out of his head?
"I was pretty sure I wouldn't be good friend material, considering I was developing a semi just talking about her."

It is admirable how little was enough to get me hooked. Author's writing style is extremely attention-grabbing and I'm glad there will be more of Tenley and Hayden than in this short novella!

Tenley and Hayden, are secretly watching each other. From afar they admire each other's ability to blend in and stand out in the crowd. To get up and get going every day. What they don't realise is that they are the same. Lonely and despaired.

Tenley, tries to leave her past behind and forget everything that hurt.In a new city, she has an opportunity to build a future.

Nothing was familiar. It was both a blessing and a curse.

description

The tattoo parlor across the street and the tattoo artist, fascinate and terrify her. For the first time emotions stir inside her and threaten to smash her facade of serenity.

Hayden, notices the new girl working in his aunt's bookshop. He doesn't expect the protectiveness and the yearning that soon follow.

For the first time in years, I wanted... something. Anything. As long as it was real.

Will they meet? Will they fall in love? What secrets does Tenley hides and why both seem defeated and heartbroken?

This short and enticing novella, introduces you to two complex characters and it gives you just enough information to hook you. It is my understanding that you don't need to read it to start the series, but I enjoyed the glimpse into our heroes mind and psyche before meeting each other. Can't wait to move on to Clipped Wings!

I picked up Cupcakes and Ink after I read Clipped Wings so I knew Hayden and Tenley already, but I enjoyed was seeing how they first met. This was a short novella about their first interactions, of admiring from afar and their minimal conversation. It was mostly being in their head and knowing their thoughts. This just helps me get excited for Inked Armor, the second book in the series.

This is the prequel to Clipped Wings, it gives you a little insight into Tenley and Hayden before their story kicks off in full swing during Clipped Wings.

You don't get much in the way of their pasts, but you do see all the signs that these two have had a lot to deal with. Things that have isolated them from really living. Tenley finds herself fascinated with the tattoo artist who works in the shop across from her apartment. But Hayden suddenly finds himself looking to run into this stranger more and more. Her working in the shop his aunt owns just across the street from his allows him perfect access to her.

This was a great short read and it left you with so many questions about both characters. This is the perfect little novella that will leave the readers dying to sort out what ghost lurk in their past and what is going to come of this strange new fascination they have with one another.

This is however, a very short introduction into this series, so I recommend that if you get this to be prepared to start the first full length story immediately. I know I will be cracking that one next. As for the overall feel of the story, it's hard to say for certain because of the length. I do know that I enjoyed it enough to want to read more and the set up for the next book was done nicely. I have no idea what to expect in the next book but this one got me excited to jump right in.

Cupcakes and Ink by Helena Hunting

Novella of the Clipped Wings series

3.5 stars

Tenley Page has a new apartment and a new life plan. She needs to put her past behind her. She’s fascinated by the tattoo shop across from her apartment. Inked Armor is intriguing and one of the tattoo artists has caught Tenley’s eyes. Hayden’s aunt owns Serendipity, the place Tenley soon begins to work and he can’t seem to take his eye off of her. I actually really like this novella. It’s not amazing or captivating, but it’s entertaining and fun. It’s short and a quick read. I enjoyed the story and thought it was very interesting. I have started the Clipped Wings and I highly recommend reading Cupcakes and Ink before Clipped Wings. If you don’t read Clipped Wings you’ll be very confused and I feel like Cupcakes and Ink gives insight onto the characters as well as where the story in Clipped Wings will go.

Whimsical Writing Scale: 3.5

The main female character is Tenley. I really like Tenley. I thought she was interesting and it’s very rare that I’m interested in a character in such a short novel.

Kick-Butt Heroine Scale: 3.5

The main male character is Hayden. I’m not really sure about Hayden. He does sound very interesting and hot, but he also seems obsessive and possessive. He does sound interesting though and I guess I’ll be able to make a better judgment towards him in Clipped Wings.

Swoon Worthy Scale: 3.25

The Villain- It’s a novella so there wasn’t any villain and I highly doubt there will be in the upcoming books because it seems to be contemporary.

Villain Scale: none

I really liked Hayden’s aunt. I thought she was nice and seems to be a good character and friend to Tenley.

Character Scale: 3.25

I recommend this one if you are looking for a quick read. It’s definitely worth the short time spent reading.

Plotastic Scale: 3

Cover Thoughts: I like the cover, but I’m not a big fan of it all together.

Thank you, Netgalley and Pocket Star for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is just a short little novella showing the moments when Tenley and Hayden first spot each other and how that simmering attraction between them begins. It's a great introduction and sets up the fantastic story that awaits you in Clipped Wings.

ok so I'm going back and reading this one a month or so after finishing Clipped Wings and Inked Armor

and while this book filled in a few of the gaps, it surprisingly didn't add much that I had missed. it explained a few things... but I was scared that not reading this one forst was gonna have left me with some big blanks. but luckily all this one did was just add to things Hayden or Tenley would go back and explain or recall

now don't get me wrong. it was a cute little novella. and I will take more Hayden and Tenley however I can.

and man for such a short story it had some pretty hot moments.

I'm glad I finally picked this one up. it was fun seeing exactly how they all forst met, without it being like a passing memory.

The end lol jk

Short but still good. This book did give me a inside look of how they (Tenley and Hayden) met before I start on book 1 of the Clipped Wings Series. Can't wait to read about the guys in the ink armor shop and fall in love with at least one of them lol. I already know who lmao. But anyways this book was actually good even though it was short.

This is a prequel novella to Helena Hunting’s Clipped Wings books. It’s an introduction to the two main characters, Tenley and Hayden, with a chapter in each of their POVs. And after that quick glimpse, I am already halfway in love with them both, and loving the set up of their relationship.

Tenley has recently moved to Chicago, she is all alone with hints of trauma in her recent past, and one of the only joys in her life is watching the sexy tattooist who works across the street. Hayden is tattooed, pierced and sexy as all hell. Even from the small amount that we see of him, it’s clear that he hasn’t had a great past, but he has hidden depths and seems to be an absolute sweeteheart. He’s just as entranced with Tenley as she is with him, and when she takes a job in his aunt’s bookstore across the street (which also happens to be underneath her new apartment and across the street from his), he makes it his mission to seek out the shy girl and get to know her better.

All of a sudden, my control, self-imposed exile didn’t seem all that appealing.
For the first time in years, I wanted…something. Anything. As long as it was real.

I really loved this little novella! In such a short read, I was captivated by Helena Hunting’s writing style, it flows beautifully and I was quickly and easily sucked in. I've heard that it's not necessary to read this one first, but it certainly did a great job at setting the stage and I can’t wait to dive straight into Clipped Wings.

This series is one of my all-time favorite New Adult series ever! I really enjoyed diving back in for a taste of Tenley and Hayden again. Both narrators do an excellent job. I found narrator, Jason Carpenter’s voice particularly mesmerizing. The audiobook is now my preferred method for rereading favorites like this Clipped Wings series, but I highly recommend this one in any format.

Original e-book review:
I'm intrigued by this novella introduction to Tenley and Hayden. I'm anxious to see what Tenley's story is, what made her leave everything behind, and how she builds a new life for herself while pursuing her Master's degree at Northwestern. And I'd like to know exactly how Hayden found the inner strength to get his life back on track to become the owner of a tattoo parlor, and how he deals with needing a meaningful relationship at this point in his life. Clipped Wings, the full length novel detailing their story should be a really excellent read.

**Cupcakes and Ink generously provided by publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.**

Cupcakes and Ink allures the reader into the worlds of Tenley and Hayden. The reader is introduced to these characters that have yet to be formally introduced to each other. We learn they both have secrets but we don't know anything about those secrets. My favorite aspect of this novella is the author's way of drawing the reader into this world. Here I am, having no information other the blurb, a novella that sets up for book one rather than provides any true development of character and I'm totally intrigued by both characters. My least favorite part of the novella is the length; it's rather short so not exactly what I was expecting. It's told from both Tenley and Hayden's POV to set us up for Clipped Wings. Even from the short amount of words Cupcakes and Ink provided it was well written and fluid. If the writing and allure indicates what’s to come for these two then I know I'll enjoy their story.

A very short introduction to this series.

We get introduced to the characters, learn a little about them and ultimately, end up wanting to know more about their story. Tenley is new to the town, just moved in and while we don't learn much about her you can already tell that she's hiding something. She hints at running away from her past but not much else is mentioned.

Hayden also has a past, though we learn a bit more about his then Tenley. It would appear that he has a bit of a bad boy complex, at least back in the day anyway. From what I could gather, Hayden has gone through quite a rough patch in life but has learned from it and is trying to better himself.

We also get introduced to some supporting characters who I can already tell I'm going to love. All in all, I enjoyed this short novella and I'm intrigued enough to want to hop right into the next book :)

Review- I loved this novella I can't wait to read clipped wings still waiting for it to come in the mail but I love this story so far Hayden I'm in love with him so far he's a pierced tatoo artist dream book boyfriend I can tell he's been through allot and so has Tenley she's kind of obsessed with him she lives across the street from the tattoo parlor and she ends up getting a job and he comes in there allot she's kind of skittish with him around . And he's interested in her he can't stop thinking of her they both end up looking at each other from each place which was both creepy and funny I need to know more loved it .

Favorite Quotes- One tattoo artist piqued my interest more than the others . Tall and broad , with dark hair , his extensive ink captured my attention as did his facial piercings .

Oh god , I was having sex dreams about her nephew . How much more embarrassed could I be ?

Inside the albums were snapshots of my life and all the people who had passed through it .

I could smell her perfume , or body lotion , or whatever she wore that made her smell so good. Like cupcakes . which I loved .

For the first time in years , I wanted .... something. Anything . As long it was real.

Cupcakes and Ink is a prequel short story for Helena Hunting's new Clipped Wings series. Considering it has less than 40 pages you can't expect too much of a story from this prequel but it is a great taster of the series and a really nice introduction to the characters that has definitely left me wanting more.

We meet Tenley as she arrives in a new town where she has moved to escape something from her past, we don't yet know what happened to her but we do know that it has left her damaged and wanting to start afresh. She doesn't know anyone in Chicago but she's found a reasonably cheap apartment and a part time job in the antique shop downstairs to tide her over until she starts college. She comes across as very shy and she seems to want to keep to herself but she is also incredibly intrigued by Hayden, the tattoo artist who works in the shop opposite her and who happens to be the nephew of her new boss and landlady.

We know even less about Hayden than we do about Tenley, it is hinted at that he is hiding something about his past but we don't know much more than that and I'm looking forward to getting to know him better as the series continues. I can't resist a guy with tattoos and I definitely have a thing for tattoo artists so I have a feeling I'm going to love him! Cupcakes and Ink shows their hesitant first encounters where Tenley is desperately trying to keep her distance while Hayden pushes to get to know her. There is a strong attraction on both sides and it will be interesting to see how long it takes Hayden to persuade Tenley to have a proper conversation with him.

Overall I really enjoyed this short story but I have to say I think it's incredibly expensive for what it is and I would have been disappointed if I'd paid the current price of £1.99. This is the kind of taster that is often offered for free as a way of hooking a reader and making them want to read a series and I'd say if it is offered as a freebie or at a very discounted price then it's definitely worth giving it a try but at the current price I'd be hesitant to recommend it. I'm definitely looking forward to reading Clipped Wings though because I want to know more about these characters.

Reviewed for: Where the Night Kind Roam

Cupcakes and Ink by Helena Hunting is the introduction to the Clipped Wings Series featuring to very emotionally scarred people who in each start to find new life. So I admit I read all two full length novels and this novella in quick succession so I can’t really remember where one left off and the other picked up. So a bit of Clipped Wings may bleed in a little bit. This novella is a very quick read and it’s kind of hard to review something that was so short (about 60 pages) but it packed a punch. In this brief glimpse you are pulled in and given just enough to keep you curious and look forward to the first book. Tenely has a dark secret, and a shit load of guilt. She is on the quiet side and on the surface seems really timid almost submissive but as the books move along you realize that her fiery side is just suppressed by her trauma. She is stronger than she looks. Hayden, is our bad boy tattoo artist, at least that is the way he appears on the outside. He’s covered in tattoos and piercings. He has a dark past he’s not proud of but he’s finally found his way in life... mostly... He’s fiercely intelligent and keeps people an arm’s length away because he suffers from his own guilt. Tenley and Hayden meet and there is instant attraction which produces more guilt for Tenley and determination from Hayden. After reading this book be prepared for an emotional but in the end a stratifying roller coaster ride!

This was a short book but perfect for starting their story off. You got to know a little about them - just enough to make you intrigued. You know that they are both interested in each other but with hints that their pasts are troubled, I am expecting an exciting story to come.

I loved that there was a contrast in the way in which Tenley sees Hayden to the impression I got of him from reading his part of the book. You don't get told much about their pasts which I liked. I think the story flowed well when reading it even with the change in narrator half way through the book.

This has thoroughly piqued my interest and am looking forward to reading the next instalment.
