A Betty's Pledge: Volume One

Rate this book
There is an exclusive group known as the Grants who only allow the most seductive women into their circle, and Madeline “Mady” Chase would give anything to get in. After years of mundane, disappointing sex, Mady is ready for more. Much more. Too many men out there favor the trashy crap that often parades around the local bars and college hangouts. To Mady, it seems like they’d rather drool over a girl with a fifty thousand dollar plastic surgery bill and clothes that would better fit a five-year-old than find some substance and passion in a woman. She wants more than stale, bland, fake sex, and the Grants could be just what she needs.

Isaac Wilson has been dissatisfied more times than he can count in the past two years. Being one of the Grants definitely has its privileges, but now he finds himself wanting more. Usually, it just meant another long month of disenchantment on his part when the Grants realized their new batch of women were no good. Each year, the program found several candidates that fit their needs, but as was often the case, they lacked that certain spark Isaac was looking for. To him, it didn't matter. Either way, he’d have a lot of fun wading through the rejects.

As of the date of this review, the fanfic from where this seems to come is still live on Fanfiction.net.

The Twilight fanfic "The Betty Chronicles" by Emily Bowden.

Considering this book is only vol 1, we can probably expect that there will be at least two, if not three pieces to the fanfic, which currently stands at 30 chapters and 123K words.

Here's a link, if you don't believe me.

Might be time to grab a copy for posterity's sake.

A Betty's Pledge is definitely a one of kind of storyline that I have ever read. It's different and I must warn readers that this book ends with a cliff-hanger. I have very mixed feelings on this book.. My rating for this book would be between a 3 and 3.5 stars.

This book had everything from sexually inexperienced females, bad boys, alpha males, BDSM, and a menage a trois. A Betty's Pledge focuses on lucky ladies who are hand pick and chosen to join this secret elite group called the Grants where they discover their sexuality and possibility of being matched to a man of social class. These women should be honored to get accepted into this selective group.

At the Grants, these pledges would discover their sexuality whether it be BDSM, a three-way, or rough sex. In this case Madeline Cain,a pledge meets Issac. There was instant chemistry between the two. With Issac, Madeline finds sexual pleasure. He was the first one to give her an orgasm. Issac has never met a woman like Madeline who has intrigued and challenged him. The draw and magnetic pull is there but there is hesitation on Issac's part. He wants her for himself but at the same time, he distances himself from her. His mood swings ranges from Hot and Cold...so hopefully in the next installment, we will get a better understanding of Issac.

I look forward to the next volume because I'm curious if Madeline will stick only to Issac or will she explore other matches for her.

Writing was meh. This was just okay as fanfic, but I wouldn't actually recommend PAYING for this. The story is unique, if a bit strange, and might have been pulled off by a more skilled writer.

A cliffhanger? Really? I hate when books end on a cliff--makes me want to pitch the book over one.

Oh and you could have read it for free on a fan fiction site until the author pulled it down, but made sure to leave up a note about her published book (in order to keep the review count!) along with a boo-hoo about how readers are being mean to her (when she pulls before the story is done and asks them to pay to read the ending), then backpedaled and started some "alternate timeline." Um,think I'll pass.

I loved this book, I was surprised really because I don't really like books like this but my gosh it was good. I love the fact that is was written in two POV'S you get to learn and understand both character's and its easy to get sunk in to. It will make you want more and I did want more I still do. This story was hot and really good. I'm glad I had the opertunity to read it.

Overview

My Thoughts

This is an interesting story and take on a sex club type environment. What we get here is a school of sorts, where women apply and are accepted into a program to be a Betty pledge and learn about various different perspectives of their sexual nature in the hopes of finding what it is that they need in life and possibly to be 'mated'. The guys however, they are there for another reason i'm learning. The 'Consorts' are being paired with these Betty's through various ranking scales based on the information that the ladies have provided. It's interesting to say the least since it's not clear to the women that they are paired, and the guys are really just having fun having lots and lots of sex.

The Grants - the family that has started this program are quite wealthy and decided that it was in their interest to keep the program open to only those who could afford entrance. Mady is accepted through a scholarship of sorts via her best friend who's gone through the program as Mady is from an entirely different background from everyone else. This continues to play a role throughout the book since she feels inferior to everyone from time to time.

I have to say that I kept wondering where the anxiety and peak of this book was going to happen. While we get several really steamy scenes between Mady and her 'Dame' Diane, as well as with Isaac and Mady as well, there wasn't the tension that i've come to expect from this genre. Not a bad thing, just wondering....

It's also interesting to me that the end of this book kind of just dropped off - while there was a little bit of an event at the very end to make you wonder what would happen, it wasn't nearly as anxiety ridden as we usually get (you know, because of these books have someone being kidnapped or threatened). Here - it's just a jealousy/relationship tension i think....and maybe a creepy guy who's going to try to take advantage.

Anyhow, i'm looking forward to volume 2 to see what happens - although i have no idea when it comes out :) (maybe 2015 is what i read). Enjoy

When I finished this book I had a few mixed feelings on a few things so I am scoring it a 3 star book but I will explain it below. Due to this, there might be spoilers below. Just a bit of a warning.

I liked the fact that the setup of how everyone is acquainted and the way in which they all mingle is unique. At least from my own personal collection of books the mansion concept is new to me. Not the mansion itself because you see a mansion for BDSM and erotic houses and clubs all the time in books. I am talking more in particular as the whole "Betty" role and how they work (ex: the stones at the bottom of the champagne glasses to signify your order in the system). Things of that nature was interesting to see work and actually made sense to do it considering it kept things simple and understood without having to be uncomfortable and have unnecessary questions when you first talk to a new face.

I liked the fact that each Betty had a mentor. I think it not only allows the reader the chance to see our main character, Mady, show her social side and character but you also get to have an inside view on her thoughts of the house, concerns and fears through her conversation with her mentor. Plus I just think hers is kick-ass!

Their rule to wait until they have moved into the house and adjusted was nice. It made the house seem less like a meat market and showed they actually cared about both the pleasure for the grants and bettys by making sure the bettys were on equal footing and felt comfortable to move forward.

Some of the things I didn't really like was I felt that the book was too short. The issue with this was that I didn't feel like I got a good connection with Mady before the moved into the house then when she was talking about how she was sponsored by her friend because she couldn't afford it was a bit boggling. Only because she then proceeded to explain that she used her money to buy a nice car so that she didn't stand out at the mansion. As her friend who sponsored her, i would be LIVID that you spent money on a fancy car but you couldn't pay your dues to be a betty at the mansion. Somethings twisted but that's my personal feelings on the matter. I don't car what kind of car I drive as long as the membership is paid. With the whole story plot between Mady and Isaac kind of didn't make sense to me either. I understand you think he is cute, you even think there could be something there between you and you want to explore it. But she had only ONE sexual encounter with him and she admitted she didn't like him looking at other females. The house rules is set up so that both parties can explore so her desire to have only him and he only her, is a little wonky. I wouldn't mind the attraction and need to be exclusive later in the book when the connection is warranted but her attachment this early on was a bit much. It's why at the end of the book when he came out of the tent in less than flattering circumstances, I literally rolled my eyes at Madys immaturity about the whole situation at hand.

The inability to not be able to connect with Maddy was my strongest reason I gave it a 3 star rating. If I cannot connect then I feel like an outsider in the very book im reading, and I don't like that.I'm hoping the second installment will redeem my feelings on Maddy significantly because right now shes acting like a twat in my opinion.

Madeline “Mady” Chase is bored and dissatisfied with the men she chose to give herself to in the past. With the help of her friend Mina, she applies and is selected to join an exclusive group called the Grants that moves affluent women called Bettys into a mansion and gives them lessons about sex and offers them an opportunity to find a future mate.

While Mady is dissatisfied with the men outside the Grants, Isaac Wilson is dissatisfied with the past Bettys who are chosen to pledge to the exclusive society. He thinks sex with them has become mundane and without any emotion or spark. As new pledges enter he finds himself less and less enthused with the selection until he lays eyes on Mady.

Betty’s Pledge was a well written story. A large majority of it was very, very descriptive. I normally would have found the large amount of description and internal monologue boring but the aspects of the society and the workings of it interested me. I think a lot of the details were meaningful to the story. There were certain instances when I wanted more dialogue and interaction to take place between certain characters and the description/internal monologue made the story go quite slow because of the lack of dialogue.

It was written in first person and narrated from both Mady and Isaac’s perspective. It was nice getting both people’s perspectives and having the opportunity to understand their characters and what motivated them.

Toward the beginning of the story I found Mady intriguing but closer to the end I started to dislike her. At first she seemed kind of open to finding some type of emotional attachment but all of a sudden everything seemed strictly sexual for her. I didn’t quite understand why she thought emotions weren’t an option toward the end, especially since she knew that there were mated couples that had loving relationships in the house. Her entire resolve against emotions frustrated me and confused me a little. I don’t think that part of her internal monologue played out well enough for me to be capable of understanding why she felt that way.

I liked Isaac a little more but his feelings vs his actions confused me as well. His internal monologue kept saying that he didn’t want to fall for Mady and he wouldn’t give her this or give her that but then out of the blue he wanted to have a discussion with her about emotions. I kind of understood his conflict more than Mady’s but there were still times when I really didn’t understand him and his actions at all.

I love Diane’s character. I’m interested to see how Nate and his straying eyes play out.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. I thought the ending was super abrupt as if the story was stopped in kind of an anticlimactic place. It didn’t feel like a traditional cliffhanger it just felt like an event that occurred in the middle of the story. Either way, I was interested and I still want to know what happens next so I’m definitely waiting for the sequel.

A Betty's Pledge - Volume One. Emma Husher
Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews.
I like well written erotica, the sort that has a story behind it that appeals to me. As this novel isn't released at time of writing I couldn't read sample, but looked at description and decided to give it a try.
I've mixed feeling about the novel, though the description is apt I found it difficult to quite get my head around the purpose of the group, and just what Bettys and Consorts (the men) get out of it....Hot sex of course, but surely there was more motivation that that? I seemed to get a feeling that the participants were hoping for a full time parter, certainly some of the Alumni and mentors had found theirs that way, and yet that part seemed to be kept quiet, maybe as most of them were so wealthy they needed to protect themselves? I don't really know and didn’t really find an answer.
Anyway Mady, I liked her, a nice mix of sexy without arrogance, and sensuality without being pushy about it. Her moments of confidence crisis too felt very real, and fitted with what we knew of her personality. I liked the other girls too – and the much needed bitch duo among the Bettys. Every good romance needs some nasties, some bitch personas to keep things interesting.
Then there's Isaac...he seemed a mix to me of someone on one hand wanting what he saw others have, a partner to trust, rely on, and be close with, and yet on the other his brashness would come out when he'd act in a way that may him seem arrogant, cold and unfeeling, only interested in sex, not the person in the body.
Though I felt the book was slow starting, once it got going it was hot...with some erotic sensual scenes, including f/f and m/f/f and some minor BDSM so it that doesn't suit take heed. I felt it fitted the story line really well, and worked to show what was happening. I wanted Mady and Isaac to be together, ( I’m a sap at heart!) but their relationship seemed to be one step forward and then two back... and then that ending! Arghh – I hate, hate, hate cliffhangers, and add to that the next book isn't due til next year. If this were one complete book it would be a five star read from me, but I know I’ll have read several hundred others by time part two is out, and I’ll need to re read ( which is fine, but it means the time I’ve just spent reading is really wasted ) to get back properly into the story. I haven't at time of writing got price or length info. From time it took to read I’d guess 120 – 150 pages on kindle.
Stars: four. As I said if it was a complete book I’d probably have gone for a five but....cliffhanger + long wait bring it down.

Received from NetGalley in exchange for honest review.

Let me start by saying that, I had mixed feelings about A Betty's Pledge so I wavered between giving it 3 or 4 stars.

On one hand, the book had everything you'd want in an erotic novel - sexy alpha male bad boys, a slightly virginal female, learning about her sensuality for the first time, and tons and tons of naughty sexy escapades. The sexy times weren't lacking and for the most part they were pretty steamy and well executed.

The issues I had with the book were probably more to do with it's editing than anything else. Now, I understand I was reading a galley copy, so proofreading errors are understandable and to be expected. When I say editing, I mean content. Particularly in the first 40% of the book, I found myself scratching my head over the amount of time devoted to describing each character's (even minor ones) wardrobes. This actually had me skimming through pages to get to the rest of the story.

Several references to male genitalia such as Chubby, chubs, and man meat, while a bit amusing, didn't endear me to, or make me feel attracted to the male lead. Not to mention the gratuitous use of the word "fucktard" or other variations of the word "tard" left a bad taste in my mouth.

As I stated previously though, overall, I enjoyed the book, but I felt that the first half needed a bit more polish and content editing to really make it shine!

In the second half of A Betty's Pledge, the editing and writing was 100% better, leading me to think that maybe it hasn't been completely through the editing process yet? If that's the case, I would love to read the final version of this book. Since I plan to read book 2 in this series(the ending definitely left me wanting more...) it would be nice to see the finished, more polished final version and read them together for the full experience!

This is a bit of a mixed review for A Betty's Pledge, this is volume one of the series and I have a feeling it could be like a fine wine and mature with age - then again I may be wrong.

I wasn't sure whether to give this book a 3 or 4 star rating, but settled on a 3. I liked it, but I felt it could have been better.

When it comes to erotica I feel there is a 'standard' and you can almost guess what's going to happen, there is predictability but in the same sense the 'hot scenes' often will be what isn't predictable.

A Betty's Pledge isn't a bad story, the characters are ok and at times even though I wasn't too keen on Mady I didn't hate her either. Isaac is a somewhat cocky, predictable alpha but I've become immune to those in this type of novels and I can often over look parts of their personalities if I don't like them.

I just felt this book lacked a little. It wasn't very well edited at times and although I am guessing this is an ARC (Uncorrected proof), there was certain things I felt that should have been sorted before it got to this stage.

However, that aside, I would read volume 2. Its not a long book and I read this in 1 sitting. It has most the ingredients for a good erotica novel and I think many will enjoy it, due to certain things though I could only give this 3 out of 5, if I was to read this once it was published, this review may have been more of a 4 star book.

Lately books have been written with the lead women having knowledge of what they want out of life, men, and in the bedroom. In A Betty’s Pledge the author illustrates how some of us [women] are clueless. Most erotic novels are written with the perfect “O” (O is for Orgasm). “O” envy is buzz worthy.

Mady is “O” envy. She applies to this “program” so she can learn more about herself, her wants and her needs. She is strong and determined to grow from life.

Isaac is looking for something new, and not the same o same o. He needs to be taken to a new level of A-wesomeness.

When these two get together, lets say that “O” is not just heard but it is also a quiet facial expression.

I must say that Emma brought a new storyline to the mix. It is not some of the same o same o, that we often read. She has redefined the “O” and they are fab.

The book is about what women and men need from each other, the connection required to be a unit, to be “one”. The story gives the reality of sex and that fab “O” and the needs that need fulfilling from each person.

The characters to watch are Mady, Isaac, Nate, Sonia and Diane. I think they are, or will be, major players throughout this series.

I finished the ARC and have already chosen sides.

I am so excited for the next book and eager to see if my prediction of this book is right.

Happy reading.

I really liked this book. Okay it's not your normal erotic romance. There's consorts, pledges, mated pairs, and learning what your body wants and needs. A place to go where you can explore and maybe find your soul mate.

Madeline Cain has never had an orgasm with a man during sex. She can get her self off but is tired and feels like she's missing something. Why not partake in a place that knows how to pleasure a woman? I liked her fine. She came off as a strong woman but sometimes it felt like she was really insecure.

Issac well. I'm not sure yet how I feel about him. His mood swings are hard to keep up with and yes we find a little glimpse as to why he's the way he is, but man. His mood swings are hard to keep up with. I promise you'll enjoy this book. Give it a shot!

Thanks netgalley for a free read in exchange for my review.
It's one thing to write a book about erotic sex when all the characters in the book are either not getting good sex, or have screwed so much they're bored. It makes me tired.....to think they're are people like this in the real world. The book was written well, but it just annoyed me. I love to lose myself with characters but the behavior of these adults were irritating and grated my nerves...the idea was one I'd never heard before. Character building was okay, even though I couldn't identify with any of them. I guess I just don't get it....I mean what does good sex have to do with any of that stuff anyways. So for me two stars.

Arghh! I almost gave this one 4 stars.

The thing that bothered me most was the cliffhanger. I didn't know it was one, or I would have waited to read it.

I feel so cheated. Like I need to know what happens.

Okay, I'm switching it to 4 stars because if it leaves me wanting more it's gotta be good right? Right.

Please. Don't take too long in writing the next part.

Grrrrrr......

Is your looking for a hot erotic read then this is the book for you.

It is not the normal run of the mill erotica that has been on sale lately. There was times when I was reading that I wished there was a bit more to the story, but I did like what I was reading.

Looking forward to the next instalment.
