I cannot get enough of slow burns and if the guy is bearded, hot, good with his hands and taciturn then that warms my nethers very nicely indeed.

I'm happy to say they are good and toastie after this.

She's moved across the county for a new start, he's the hot, enigmatic and terribly handy tradesman working on her home. We know he's a goodie because not only does he come in and work on stuff with his fully equipped toolbox until it actually works but he does said stuff proactively, using his own initiative and without her even needing to mention it a couple of hundred times first.

Ladies, I can only imagine such men truly exist, but until then, there's fiction.

Anyway, he's kind of lusty, alpha and an out and out proper man so the tension between them was quite delish and the smut was well worth the wait. There was some angst that was moving rather than miserable.

It's a relatively short read, but I was hooked - it felt like an escape for me too. I liked the writing style very much, better than the average I thought. My only slight niggle is that the story jumped around a little at first and that lost me briefly, but once I'd got past that I loved this one.

This is a standalone and available on ku. I'll definitely be reading more from this author. Recommended.

*** 3 Cranky Stars ***

This book is about second chances at love and finding it with the most unusual people.

Laney is running from a bad past and ends up in a small town across the country from her real home. While trying to restore a cabin, she meets Joe – a rough and tumble ex army guy.

Their meeting is awkward and so is their love affair. Joe redefines the term taciturn and spends large parts of the book communicating through grunts.

This book is a journey to find love and I struggled to connect with it and them. There were some repetitive moments, which I found distracting: it was well-established Joe was bearded and Laney enjoyed crawling across the bed.

Parts were disjointed and I had to backtrack and re-read for clarity.

In saying that, the book had its good moments. It has the potential to be really good and the start of an interesting series.

*I was provided a copy of Bear Creek Road by the author in exchange for an honest review. I am not compensated for my honest opinion.*

Bear Creek Road tells the story of Laney Walker, a twenty-eight-year-old woman who feels old before her time thanks to recent events in her life. She’s just left everything and everyone she knows behind to start over, moving across the country to a small town where life is very different from what she’s used to. In Laney’s quest to get away from her problems, she finds herself a whole set of new ones in the shape of a run-down house and an attraction to a man who seems to want nothing to do with her.

The baffling Joe Boone takes it upon himself to fix Laney’s house. He arrives before the rest of the construction crew and is always the last to leave, yet he barely speaks to her. Despite warnings that Joe is no good, Laney can’t help but want to be close to him even though she has her own demons to contend with.

Laney unapologetically wears her flaws on her sleeve, recognizing her weaknesses while trying to find who she really is. Joe hides his flaws behind a beard and shaggy head of hair, only speaking when necessary. He’s a mystery you’ll want to unravel, and you’ll find yourself hanging on his every word.

This story is so different from everything I’ve read recently, with one of the main characters providing such limited dialogue, but that’s exactly what draws me to Joe. I can’t wait for his next words. While reading, I feel like I’m right there with Laney, wondering what’s going through Joe’s mind and what he means by the few words he does say. Add that to the sexual tension that builds between these two, and you’ll need something to cool off with when the tension reaches its boiling point!

Bear Creek Road is book one in the A Fresh Start series, but it’s a standalone novel. The characters are refreshingly real and down-to-earth, making this story a pleasure to read. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Favorite Quotes:

“Without another word, we settled back into our routine of him ignoring me and me wishing he wouldn’t.”

“I could sense it brewing – the crazy. I had it in me, I knew that much. And I knew that if he wanted to, he could bring it out. He held the power to work me up into a frenzy if he wanted to… if I let him.”

“Wasn’t that the human condition? Always wanting what we couldn’t have, never thinking what we did have was good enough?”

“I knew I had the makings of a horrible person, that I was too proud and compulsively angry, that I’d become blatantly selfish in the gaining of my own self-sufficiency.”

“He was always saying sweet things, things I wasn’t expecting him to say, let alone to be thinking.”

“Pulling him closer, I encouraged him to tighten his grip – the only thing that was keeping me together, and ironically the very thing that forced me to finally fall apart.”

My Review:

This beautiful and intensely personal book has wrecked me. It turned me inside out and didn’t let go, even after I had finished reading. I had to let it process and knew I needed to settle before I could write this review - and despite being busy with other things, it stayed in my head and heart all day. Although none of the tragic events chronicled here have ever happened to me, I felt them as deeply as if I had, and I was rocked to my core. Written in first person, the story is emotive, profoundly insightful, and deeply moving. This is not literary prose… it is simply written, yet deeply perceptive. In addition to being exceptionally talented, Ms. Morgan is a sneaky one, as she blindsided me several times. I was blinking back tears and struggling to breathe while my heart was being squeezed in a vise-like grip. Wrecked! I am ruined! And I totally loved it. Excellent job. More please.

Bear Creek Road was a good debut from LC Morgan. This was a simple, easy read that while a familiar story, was enjoyable and entertaining. At first I was a little skeptical given the overly descriptive writing style, but the writing found it’s groove once it moved beyond the physical descriptions of the surroundings and on to the personal interactions. The story is not a complex one. Laney leaves her old life to escape recent heart break, and while repairing her run-down getaway home, falls for the quiet, wounded warrior Joe. Laney was a little confusing for me in the sense that her character didn’t seem consistent throughout. Our experience with her as a reader is kept quite superficial, and because she didn’t really explore her past or her emotions until much later, there were pieces/actions that didn’t fit for for me and made her seem cliche and familiar. I did find myself completely intrigued by the mysterious Joe. I’m not typically one for little detail, but the longer he remained a mystery, the more I wanted to really see him. Their interactions together were sometimes tense, but more often sweet and fun, and I found myself getting a little swept away in these two at times. That said, while I liked the mystery up front, I was really looking for more depth here with regard to both – from a character development and an emotional perspective. We just don’t learn very much about these two. Additionally, I needed more dialogue and interaction between them, as their relationship seemed to jump over key emotional battles/hurdles with little effort or conflict. So while it didn’t have the depth I was looking for, I did enjoy the story. Definitely on the right path, I just needed more to get to that level where you just love these two characters and what they were building.

When a terribly betrayal and failed engagement send Laney running, she finds herself the new owner of a dilapidated old house deep in the woods and as far as possible from the life she once knew. Faced with peeling wallpaper, rusted out pipes, and no electricity thanks to a tree taking out the power line, her days become filled with restoration efforts, workmen traipsing over her property and through her house, and gossipy neighbors intent on setting her up with some bland guy who couldn't be further from her type. Her type is more the quiet, gruff, clearly not interested in her Mr. Fix-it that everyone's telling her to stay away from…

The Verdict: I think I'm probably one of the few who saw this story in its original incarnation and didn't read it, though I'm pretty sure I've got a copy of that version somewhere on this computer. Seriously, I download everything. But I must have been caught up in some other story or series or real life boredom at the time, so when I saw it pop up on Amazon, I figured I'd give the published version a shot. Best decision ever.

I loved Laney right off the bat, in large part because she wanted her solitude more than she wanted to play nice with the way-too-neighborly people who invaded her new start in life. It wasn't about who she needed to impress or what anyone thought of her; it was about whatever simple ways she could begin to reclaim her own life, starting with the falling apart house she'd bought. The repair crew was typical, including one particular man who kept pushing for a date despite Laney's obvious disinterest, but then there was Joe. Joe's not your typical romance novel hero. He's quiet and gruff to the extreme, and he brushes off nearly every attempt Laney makes at conversation. But he stays long after everyone else leaves every day, working on things that aren't part of the job, and it's those simple, clear gestures that speak more than he does.

Laney and Joe are both pretty broken people, though their story focuses more on simple human interaction than heavy angst. Their courtship, if you will, is atypical as well, a series of awkward silences and growing comfort that culminate in a deep relationship that relies more heavily on emotion and small actions than words. Not much is offered in the way of the characters' backgrounds, aside from the simple facts that both led them to where they meet, but even that doesn't feel like an oversight, instead keeping everything about the here and now, the intersection that begins their real story. Laney and Joe both seem to be drifting in a sort of numbness until they come together, and still they have internal walls to overcome before they're all in.

The writing style, while not your standard literary prose, evokes the same depth of feeling, and where most romances depend on over-the-top declarations and grand gestures, Bear Creek Road tells a beautiful love story in subtleties and moving expressions.

FEELS!!!!

okay, now that I have that out of the way (feels) this book was awesome in that it made me feel *everything* (okay, apparently, not quite done with the feels) (have I mentioned the feels? 'cause, yeah, plenty of them in this book!)

I hardly know where to start, so here goes (I generally used "spoiler" mode for lines from the book, though the first one is sort of a subject-matter spoiler - don't "show spoiler" if that stuff annoys you)
- Morgan's writing brings everything to life, the smells, sights, sounds, the feels (but you already knew about the feels)
- there are some very heavy issues that the characters face (), but somehow, through it all, Morgan manages to infuse some humor into everything - that (the ability to add some levity to serious situations), to me, is pretty amazeballs () - and she did it in a way that didn't take away from the story - she did it in a way that let you work through the situation and not get too bogged down in the seriousness of it all (if that makes sense)
- so many truths in this book:
- the words, oh my, the words!! this really is a beautifully written story, I just got so caught up in the words and how they came together to describe the little details - feels - did I mention the amount of feels this book elicited? 'cause, yeah, FEELS! (sorry I'm not as eloquent as Morgan and can only manage to yell "feels!")
- the story is told in Laney's POV and the only thing I could wish for is, maybe possibly, a little bit of Joe's POV (then, I think, no no no - too much of a good thing can just be too much) (maybe) (jury's still out)
- Joe Joe Joe Joe Joe - ahhhhh ... Joe

this was a pretty quick read for me, if you're in the mood for feels & a well-written story, I would highly recommend this one!

This is one of those stories that just warms my heart. You witness two people overcome some bad situations without dealing with a lot of the angst that’s common in romance today.

Laney leaves her life behind when she finds out that her fiancé cheated on her with her best friend. She buys a fixer upper online. She knows some of the things wrong with it, but don’t understand the full extent until she sees it in person and the realtor lets her know that the plumbing needs to be completely replaced. The realtor promises that her husband can get his crew started on it right away. One of the guys on the crew is Joe. He doesn’t have much to say, but Laney still feels drawn to him. He’s sexy, but guarded. It doesn’t stop him from showing up early and staying late. He’s never really mean to Laney, but he doesn’t start off as the nicest guy in the world. It actually works for Laney as she is going through her own mess.

Laney’s realtor is actually Joe’s sister and she warns Laney away from him, but you can tell Joe isn’t the asshole he’s made out to be. He’s struggling through his own issues, but it’s obvious he cares for Laney even when he isn’t super vocal about it. I love how Laney sorta forces a friendship on Joe and how it morphed into more. You can’t help but root for Joe. I mean he sticks around fixing all sorts of stuff at her house and eating her crappy food. You can tell he just wants to be around her. When he actually does start opening up, it was like taking a huge breath of fresh air.

I think it would be difficult for anybody not to fall in love with this couple. There were a few times that I struggled with Laney just letting Joe’s unclear comments slide, but I could understand where she was coming from. There were also a few pretty funny parts too. When she showed up at his house and ended up turning the tv on, but I loved the way things flowed so honestly between them. I could see this being a true story, which is pretty rare with a lot of romance nowadays.

A gifted copy was provided by the author for an honest review.

I really felt that this book was just a solid good read for me. I believe this is one of the first novels for this author, and if this is her debut then I cannot wait to see how she grows into this world of literature. For a first timer, this book read like a seasoned writer wrote this thing! This book was emotional and serious, but so lovable.

"Without another word, we settled back into our routine of him ignoring me and me wishing he wouldn't."

Laney got dumped. Well technically she did the dumping since she walked in on her fiancé cheating with her best friend... major burn. So what does Laney do? She up and leaves. Not just the man she thought she would be with for the rest of her life, but the town, city, and state. And now she's moved across the country to Big Bear, California to reestablish some sort of peace within her and her life. But during her glorious adventure she meets soul named Joe just as tortured as she is.

"Had I told him I wanted to bear his bearded babies? Did I say that out loud?"

My goodness this book lit me up! I really loved the struggle between Joe and Laney, but I wanted more detail. I felt there was so much more to be said, so when I got to the The End part, I felt a little disappointed that there wasn't more to their story. Do I want a second book... YES PLEASE. (hint**hint Ms. Morgan). I want more books about all the folks in Big Bear! I'm giving this book 4 STARS out of 5 STARS.

I received this book from the author and from Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock.

I have such mixed feelings about this book, I have to be fair and say that I did not love it, but at the same time I did not hate it. There was something that keeps bringing me back to my kindle.

The story begins with a young woman named Laney, who has moved to a new town to get away from her life. She experiences a rough few years. She wants to make a new start clean slate. Then she moves to Bear creek, into a house that needs lots of love along with all new water pipes. That's how she meets Joe

Joe is a returning soldier who holds a dark past. He doesn't talk much, he just works from sun up to sundown. When Laney runs into Joe's doing repairs on her new home, something breaks inside both of them, their walls start to melt. Joe and Laney have a lot to work out between them, many hurdles to jump. If they can break down their walls, they just might have a chance at finding love. I liked the way the story unfolded, it wasn't some sappy love story. We have two people with two very damaged hearts, and between them they can heal each other if they let the walls they build down. Unfortunately, most of the time I was left disappointed, some of the writing fell flat for me when I thought there should have been more to the dialogue or to the story in general I was left hanging wanting, needing more. That is why this book is getting a 3 out of 5 fangs from me. As much as I loved the story I left wanting more or confused because I a little more meat to my story.

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.

Laney Walker moved to a new town, buying a house sight unseen. Arriving, there was no water and no electricity. But that was okay. This was something she did by herself. Leaving her old life behind. She can take care of herself. After meeting the workers her first morning in her new home, she walks into Joe. He never says anything but Laney feels an attraction to him. As time goes on Joe never says more then he needed to and it drives Laney crazy. Yet at the same time she is afraid of opening up. Joe keeps coming around doing work, all day pretty much every day.

If your looking for a sappy romance this is not it. Joe is a returning solider. he keeps to himself and doesn't have to much to say. This continues through the whole book. Laney isn't much better with dialogue. What she thinks to herself is another story. It is more realistic of two people who have been badly burned in their lives and relationships. They tip toe around each other with what they feel. Even with few words you can feel the attraction between them. They fall into a relationship but don't discuss where it is going or what they are looking for. It just happens. Actions do speak louder then words.

Bear Creek Road by LC Morgan

In what is the most soul satisfying romantic read I've read to date, LC Morgan has nailed it. A whirlwind ride of all the emotions a reader requires. From heartbreak, devastation, love and overall contentment. Laney is a broken woman. After having been betrayed by the love of her life with her best friend, she moves in in search of herself. And she finds it. But in finding herself, she finds a quiet and brooding man, Joe. This book literally ate me up. I can't say that I had a dry eye. From the very descriptive tragedies and circumstances to the very aptly described characters, both main and secondary, this book rocked. I really just can't say enough! I loved the authors detail in the very sad and disheartening scenario in which I found myself bawling like a baby. I felt the love that Joe had for Laney down to my heart. It's not often that a writer nails that sentiment. But LC did a fabulous job. I felt the contempt that Laney had for Julia and even wished I was in the book to confront her. Lol Mona (Joes overzealous sister) even grated on my nerves. I give this book 5 stars and hope that this author carries on with writing!

This is one of those books that make you feel and even cry. After being jilted by her fiance in favor of her so-called best friend, Laney Walker takes off for a small California mountain town to find a new life for herself. On her second day there she literally runs into Joe Boone, a taciturn, surly, even rude guy who is so very hot. Joe is part of the crew working to rehab Laney's new house - the first thing she's ever done that's just hers. Despite a happy, cute guy wanting to date her, Laney is drawn to Joe - two broken souls being pulled together maybe? It's sometimes hard to like Laney, but you can't help rooting for these two to find their way together. They have some hot, sexy times and some very sad times in this book, as well as many other emotions - anger, joy and even forgiveness.

I loved this story. the Boones are just crazy enough in the story to keep it interesting, and the Love Between Laney and Joe you can feel and hope from the beginning that it will be a happily ever after for them. I was surprised at a few things that happened, but they turned out good for the story. there was one part, I had to read over a few times before I understood what was happening.
**SPOILER***

She has a flashback at a very important timing, and I wasn't sure if she was having her period, or worse. Once she was taken to the hospital and the ending of the previous chapter finally made me understand what was happening.

To say I love this story would be an understatement; completely consumed me from the first chapter. Laney moves to California wanting to start fresh and thinks restoring a house with the worst wallpaper imaginable would be a great way to keep her mind off her pain. Contractors are hired and there we meet Joe. Joe is a man of so little words but far from short on loving gestures. The blessing of having a real second chance isn't wasted on either of them and Im so glad I read this book. Joe and Laney make my heart smile.

Nice, lazy day read

Have to admit this felt like a slow and clunky start for these two, then jumped into high gear with no warning. I almost stopped reading but very glad I kept on. Aside from that, loved the lazy country setting, and especially loved Joe. I say lazy even though they both worked their tails off on their respective homes, but no frenetic city hustle and bustle, which I relished. Was a bit more difficult to get a feeling for Laney, but very much enjoyed the emotional epilogue.

I was given the opportunity to beta read Bear Creek Road.

I loved Laney. I loved her internal ramblings that sounded like a typical woman unsure about a new relationship. Joe, what can I say, Joe was sexy, brooding, hard working, just a downright good man. Sometimes it's refreshing to meet a hero that's not an a$$hole. I rooted for Joe even before I learned about the reason for his silence.
