Domestic engineer. Dreamer. And quite possibly certifiable.

Believing every story can shine bright with a bit of tenacious tough love, R.E. Hargrave is thorough and to the point. An international bestselling author, she takes storytelling and manuscript polishing seriously, working with her authors and on her own creations to ensure they come to life, crawling from the pages and into the reader's souls.
Hargrave lives on the outskirts of Dallas, TX and is married to her high school sweetheart; together they are raising three children. A native 'mutt,' she has lived in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Alabama, Texas, and California. She is fond of setting her stories--which range from the sweet to the paranormal, to the erotic and horrific--on location in South Carolina and Texas.
Hargrave is best known for her erotic BDSM series, The Divine Trilogy. The final book in the trilogy, Surreal, was a 2015 Golden Flogger Award Finalist with BDSM Writer's Con. In 2017, her short novella Brooklyn Blues was also a GFAFinalist.

DNF at 29%. Because I did not listen to the entire book, I do not feel it would be fair to provide a star rating.

Unchained Melody very well may be the cheesiest book ever written! The portions I endured were a a huge disappointment! I chose to read this book based on the high average ratings so I was extremely shocked when I wanted stop listening to it so early on. I forced myself to endure for 29% before finally giving up.

This book is told in first person by the male which I found refreshing. However, the thoughts and dialogue stated by this character was 100% incongruent with his personality. This character was supposed to be motivated by his, "other head" yet early on in the book he had ridiculously whimsical thoughts such as, "It would be folly to admit that her laugh sounded like angels singing"!?!?
Perhaps some of these lines might've worked if they'd come from a very mushy, cornball female character, but they absolutely did not sound realistic coming from this alpha male character!

I did not have sufficient time to evaluate the narrator's performance so a star rating will not be left for him either. From what I heard, this narrator sounds like he hasn't had any or much training in theater or acting. Although he did mostly perform his lines instead of reading them monotonously, he was a bit over eager when it wasn't needed and unenthusiastic when he should've had more emotion in his voice.

This book was a disappointment. After reading the reviews my expectations were quite high and I was so looking forward to reading this novella. In my opinion it lacked character development as well as an in-depth story line and an unlikable hero. It was somewhat hard to believe the heroine was just a phone call away and for ten years he thought of her everyday and every night, dreamed about her nightly, yet did nothing but hit on woman after woman to satisfy his sexual appetite. He drank like mad to sooth the empty place inside him becoming an alcoholic. To sum it up in one word 'poor.'

A very lovely, sweet story.

A beautiful romance over the course of 10 years relived in a memory.

Beautiful balance to the story with a beginning, middle, and end. Love when short stories are so complete. Not that I didn't want more, but a satisfying little story is always a good story.

I love this author. Her writing, prose, and story lines always leave me with a smile, some times the smile is a bit naughty, but always a smile.

Great little pick me up, I highly recommend.

Although this is a short story it's a really great full story. The author has compacted a wonderful story into these pages.

Marshall meets Melody on the night before his first assignment. Although it's a one night stand Melody is always in his dreams. Will he ever meet her? Will he get a chance of happiness?

Really enjoyable quick read. Wouldn't change a thing- I loved it.

I love these little short stories that Ms Hargrave releases every now and then. Though you know they're going to be short, it never quite prepares you for how they'll end, abruptly, leaving you frantically tapping the kindle wanting more. Unchained Melody is no different.
I have to say, for a shorter story, it is incredibly well paced. So often authors will race through the story, or it'll drag, but this book is perfectly paced from start to finish. You are sucked in from the start and it doesn't let go easily. This is doubly impressive given the frequent flashbacks Marshall has. They're very well integrated and add a great deal of depth to his character. His voice, as the lead character, is strong and clear throughout and it pulls you in as you're reading because he is so real. He's the guy you could see on the street corner, or in the pub having a quiet one. He's a real man, or at least that's the impression you get of him.

What I loved about this book is how just when you think you've figured out where Ms Hargrave is going with it, she rips the rug from under your feet and really leaves you with a feeling of whiplash. More than once I stared at the screen and, deadpan, said 'I wasn't expecting that'. But the beauty is that you don't quite mind that your internal compass has been thrown a little off kilter, because our author takes you on a whirlwind to a whole new level you never thought possible.

All that said, I really felt like the ending to this story was perfection, tying up most of the loose ends, but still, rather skillfully, leaving scope for the reader to continue thinking about the ending. I love this in a book because I don't like to do all the work, but I do like being left a little wriggle room to think 'what if'. Whilst this suits my reading style, for those of you who like things neatly finished, you'll cope, but you'll be wishing it was longer (and if I'm truly honest, so did I).

But, to conclude, as my review is at risk of being as long as this super short little gem - this was the perfect book to fill an elevenses break. Well paced, brilliantly written and a pleasure from start to finish. It would appear Ms Hargrave has yet to write a story that doesn't get 5 stars from me.

The author was able to put a whole story into only 42 pages and left us wanting more of Marshall and Melody. All Marshall was looking for was one last roll in the sack before he left the next day to head to war. He just needed the touch of an American woman, Lord knows how long it would be before he would feel that again, if ever. What he didn’t expect was for Melody to fill a void in his life that he had carried.

After their night of passion, he carried that memory in his dreams for the next ten years. After flying missions and dropping bombs the military felt he would be better back at home training the next generation of pilots. With nothing left but his memory of Melody, he began drowning his feelings in a bottle of whatever was handy. Realizing he needed help, he started therapy and was encouraged to seek out Melody, did she reach her dreams of becoming a doctor, was she married, have kids? These were answers he wasn’t sure he wanted, but knew he needed if he was ever going to move on with his life.

After a phone call, his world started taking a different turn. He found out what happen to Melody and then just as he thought things might be finally giving him a break, the unthinkable happens. The author is brilliant at sucking us in on page one and giving us a story with minimal words. She creates the scene for us that takes us away for an hour and characters that we will long to hear more about. I have to say these 42 pages made an impact on me, reminded me of what love and dedication and being left behind is all about. Make sure you get your copy of Unchained Melody and sit back and enjoy the escape it will bring you.

Unchained Melody is a novella of second chances. Marshall “Dallas” Chandler spends the eve before his first assignment, as a fighter pilot with the United States Air Force, with a woman that changes his life and haunts his dreams. A decade later will he get his second chance with this woman he hasn’t been able to forget or will tragedy strike?
This is my first experience with this author and the audio version of the story. Being that the book is a novella, this was a quick story to listen to and when it ended I wanted more. The author packs a lot of information in such a short story. I want to know more about Dallas and hope we will get more to his story. For the very quick hour it takes to listen to this book, it covers ten years of events in Chandler’s life, along with a few steamy sex scenes. There are also several surprises along the way making it surprising that it is a novella. I will be looking for more works by this author.
Audio books have become something that I’ve started venturing into recently, because of my added time in the car. Not only was the book really great, but the narrator does an excellent job in keeping the listener wanting to hear more. I found the narrator's interpretation of this story with his inflections and pauses were great at holding my attention. You can feel all the emotions that Dallas is experiencing during this story as the story is effortless read.
The narrator was able to keep my daily drive less stressful. I will be looking for other works this narrator has read. I am looking forward to finding more from this author and this narrator.

Anyone who knows me knows that I have a thing for Texan men. I don't know what it is, but it's my 'thing' I guess. We all have one. So, when i started reading Unchained Melody, I already knew I was going to like Marshall thanks to the yellow rose on the cover (my favourite rose btw), but I didn't expect to fall in love with him.
I don't 'do' book boyfriends very often, I'm usually too busy reading rather than fawning, but boy, I fawned! Everything about this man made me swoon. The swagger, the drawl, the playboy side, the problems... everything. AND most of all... he's military. He literally is the perfect man for me. I want one tied up in a yellow bow and posted to me right now.

Ok, fangirling over and done with...

The entire premise of the book is pretty much genius. Marshall is looking back over the previous 8-10 years of his life and the effect a one night stand with Melody has had on him. Let's be real, he's a broken man, but war and lost love will do that to you. The entire time I was reading, I was rooting for a reunion.

As it's a novella, that's all the detail you're going to get out of me, otherwise I'd spoil the entire thing from you, but I will say this. I literally read it in less than an hour, so it's a perfect lunch break read. Seriously, go buy it and get sucked in by Hargrave's words and the world she created, then come back and tell me how dreamy Marshall is (just remember, I called dibs)

I listened to the audio version of Unchained Melody and it's gorgeous! I don’t often listen to books, however, I’m finding more and more that it’s a great way to enjoy short stories. And La Petite Mort, is a fantastic narrator. I’ve listened to a few of his performances and I’ve enjoyed them all. His acting is top notch and his voice is sexy as hell, especially here in the role of Lieutenant Marshall “Dallas” Chandler. La Petite Mort conveys this character’s depth of emotions to perfection; Dallas’s desire during the one night he and Melody spend together, his sadness at what can never be when he deploys to Afghanistan the next day, plus so much more as the story progresses.
Ms. Hargrave weaves a well-written, beautiful story of Dallas’s life over the course of ten years. I admired his dedication to serving his country, first in combat and then as a flight instructor. I felt his loneliness, turmoil, and regret at having never contacted Melody again. When fate steps in and gives Dallas a second chance, I was on pins and needles!
Unchained Melody may be a short story but it packs a huge punch! It is a thoroughly satisfying read. I’d also encourage you to give the audio version a try!

Let me preface by saying that R.E. Hargrave is one of my favorite authors! I loved her books To Serve is Divine and A Divine Life. Anxiously awaiting the 3rd in the series, I was pleasantly surprised when I learned this morning that she came out with a little novella - very sneaky RE ;) The fact that it was a stand alone not related to her other books piqued my interest. I one clicked this morning and curled up with it on my lunch hour.
What a beautiful love story! Marshall melted my heart. He is the epitome of a suave handsome Texas gentlemen. The fact that he was in the military (uniformed and handsome to boot) made the story line better.
Melody was his soul mate and it took years for the story to come full circle. The adage is true....sometimes you have to go to hell before you get to heaven.
Without giving any more away, I'll finish by saying that you won't regret reading this book. My day is brighter and my heart skipped a beat as I had a "dream come true" moment.

NO ONE CAN COMPARE TO HER

I enjoyed this audible story of two strangers who met in a bar; both are in the Air Force. Lt. Marshall Chandler had planned and worked hard for his career as an Air Force Pilot and was shipping overseas to Iraq. His goal at the bar was to hook up with a lady for the night, and meeting Lt. Melody Carmichael was perfect. The chemistry between them leads to a night of erotic passion.

The plot of this story takes place over an extended period and will take us on the journey of Marshall and the one woman, Melody, that haunted him day and night. No other woman could even begin to compare. This is an erotic story that comes full circle, with a happily ever after ending.

I received this audio book for an honest review,

Unchained Melody is a story about an Airman named Marshall “Dallas” Chandler. He was about to ship out and wanted one last lay before leaving. Enter Melody, also an Airman, into the bar he is residing in. They spend the night getting to know each other and sleep together. But Marshall can’t forget her. For ten years he has tried sleeping her memory away with unknown women. He doesn’t try contacting her, just trying to forget her. Eventually, he is grounded and events happen that encourage him to find his lost love.He ended up crashing back into her life and learning a secret she’s had.

Unchained Melody is a great read. It’s a short read that keeps you interested. I enjoyed the story and the characters. The audio version is well read and the narrator does a great job getting the tone across. A good read.

I was gifted this book for an honest review. I have DEFINITELY found my "go to" author for short stories!! R.E Hargrave will take you on an unforgettable journey EVERY TIME!! This might be a short book that spans a decade, but I like how she brought the memories into focus. An incredible quick read that will leave with a contented, warm, and fuzzy feeling. Another AWESOME 5 STAR read!!!
As he approaches his deployment, Marshall is looking for a vivid sexy memory to keep him sane while at war. He find that in the beautiful Melody. Sanity doesn't come, dreams and desire are all he sees. His dreaded decade comes to an end when he is relocated home. Will he create new memories, or will his one encounter with Melody plague him for eternity?

One night is sometimes all it takes. This certainly the case for Marshall, as despite all his conquests after that one night, his mind keeps coming back to his one night with Melody. His commitment phobia and serving his country in the Air Force stop him from pursuing her. Is it too late or does she feel the same after that one nigh together?

This was a really sweet, short read, showing Marshall's vulnerability for us all to see. The impact of war on him emotionally is severe but sees him ultimately seeking what he lost. Not a typical romance but one that is an engrossing read with plenty of surprises along the way.

What it must feel like to be loved and yearned for like Marshal does for his Melody ♥
Marshal is in the Milatary and he's really good at what he does. Melody will "haunt" him for the rest of his life even if they only had one night.....

Marshal tainted his love for Melody a bit for me in the way he  uses woman to relieve his blue ball syndrome but despite that I really enjoyed Unchained Melody.
Years later their paths cross again and Melody hasn't been alone she's had a piece of Marshal with her all along.....

A beautiful story with a beautiful ending. I will never be able to listen to Unchained Melody again  without thinking of them♥

A beautiful ★★★★ read

Lieutenant Marshall Chandler, a pilot in the Air Force, is flying out for Afghanistan the next day and wants one more night with a beautiful woman, and meets Lieutenant Melody Carmichael, an emergency nurse with aspirations of becoming a doctor.

Over the next six years Marshall drinks his way through many women trying to get Melody out of his head. Then a forced job makes Marshall reevaluate his life.

Will Marshall try and find Melody after all this time? Then in an instant everything can be gone for Marshall and he may not have that chance after all.

This book is all about true love and how it can happen instantly and make you never forget that one.

I've read several of RE's work and she never disappoints! I generally stay away from short stories because I find them lacking in several areas. I enjoyed this story very much though. In so few pages, I came to care for the two main characters very much and I thoroughly enjoyed the way that we were kept up to date with what was going on in Marshall's life while learning about his time with Mel.

If you are looking for a lunch time read or a "the kids are finally in bed and I'm taking a bubble bath" read, this is definitely the book for you!

What a beautiful story!!! Another quick book, but it was fantastic. This is a love story between Marshall and Melody. After one night with her she ups and leaves. He is always on his mind. After years have passed they meet back up. Melody has a surprise for him. I won’t give the story away, but this is a great love story. If you are looking for a quick read, this is the book for you. It was well written and only thing I wished was that it was longer!! I was sad when it ended. Great Job!! I recommend this book! Overall I give this book 5 stars!

I really enjoyed this book. The story was packed with so much in such a short period of time. So well written. I enjoyed every part of it. You don't often find shot stories that have such great plots as this book does. Usually there's not enough time to fit it all in, in a short read but somehow R.E. Hargrave made it work. A great enjoyable mini read. I loved the characters and felt like I really got to know them. When the book was done I came away feeling like I had read a whole book not just a short story. I highly recommend this book.

Unchained Melody by R.E. Hargrave was a great quick read. Marshall and Melody's story is on that I believe many people can relate to. Marshall always thought Melody was the one woman who may have gotten away even though there was nothing he could do. It takes him a decade and many mistakes to make changes for the positive. I loved reading this story it was a great read. I can't wait to read more by R.E. Hargrave.

Unchained Melody

By: R. E. Hargrave
Narrated by: La Petite Mort

This is sweet second chance romance. The story is set over a span of 10 years, starting with Marshall Candler’s one night stand with Melody. He is starting his career in the USAF and deploys overseas the next day, she has plans to become a Doctor and they never bothered to exchange contact info. Never the less, he could not get Melody out of his head and every woman he met there after was compared to her, none ever compared to her. Unhappy and with life spiraling out of control he is deployed back home to Texas. He then finds his Melody once again. Once again R.E Hargrave adds a nice twist to the story. Thanks for another great story!

I listened to the Audible edition narrated by the talented La Petite Mort. He brings a lot to the story, sets the perfect tone and adds the right amount of dramatic flair. He has a wonderful voice and is a great performer! Thank you for another great listen!!
